CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

12/19/05

Good morning. It’s Monday, December 19, 2005, and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

As promised last month, Senators Clinton, Lieberman and Bayh came together and introduced the Family Entertainment Production Act in Washington on Friday.  The proposed videogame legislation would federally mandate the use of the ESRB ratings system by retailers, and thereby prevent the sale/rental of mature-rated videogames to minors.  The legislation also proposes independent annual review and analysis of the ESRB ratings system that could further empower the Federal Trade Commission to levy additional rules.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Noddy is going to be singing a different tune of a sort, as its rights owner Chorion PLC, inks a deal with EMI Music Publishing UK.  Under the agreement EMI will oversee the development and marketing of the range of brands managed/developed by Chorion across audio, TV, and other multi-media platforms and licensing deals.  Chorion brands include stories and characters created by authors including Agatha Christie, Georges Simenon and Raymond Chandler, and kid’s authors including Enid Blyton’s Noddy, the Famous Five, The Wishing Chair among others, and the recently acquired Roger Hargreaves’ Mr. Men & Little Miss.  Additionally, EMI Music Publishing has a separate long-term agreement with Abbey Home Media to represent its brands, which include Baby Bright and MacDonald’s Farm.

MORE KIDS STUFF

PBS KIDS Sprout will present the Let’s Snow Show, a 3-hour block of holiday-themed preschool programs and hosted by the network’s Kevin and Melanie, beginning today and airing throughout the holiday season.  On Christmas Eve, Sprout will air a 24-hr Let’s Snow Show block beginning at 6a.  The network’s Kevin (“the birthday host”) and Melanie (The Good Night Show) will host Let’s Snow Show from “inside a giant snow globe” and feature special episodes of Bob the Builder, Thomas and Friends, Angelina Ballerina, Barney and Friends etc., as well as featuring holiday stories, games and crafts.  The network is asking viewers to make their own snowflakes and submit them with some of the snowflakes being featured during the block.  Information about creation/submitting snowflakes can be found at www.sproutletsgrow.com .

Disney Channel will premiere its newest original movie High School Musical, Friday, January 20, 8p, which also serves as the kick-off of a weekend long event that includes multiple plays of the movie.  After the debut, viewers can go to www.DisneyChannel.com and hear the movie’s soundtrack and download the lyrics.  The following night the channel will host Sing-Along Saturday Night, a stunt that will feature another play of the movie at 8p, this time featuring the lyrics on the lower third of the screen.  High School Musical follows two teens, a popular basketball star and a brainy newcomer to school who both love to sing, learning about themselves while dealing with the typical high school cliques as they audition for the leads in the school musical.  Additionally, kids can download a song from the movie by entering a code found on the movie’s print ads or heard on Radio Disney, available January 3-20.  The site will also feature a party planning kids, invitations etc.  The movie stars Zac Efron (Summerland), Vanessa Anne Hudgens (Thunderbirds, Thirteen), Ashley Tisdale (The Suite Life of Zack & Cody), Corbin Bleu (Flight 29 Down), Lucas Grabeel (Halloweentown High), Monique Coleman (Boston Public, Veronica Mars) and Alyson Reed (The Agency, Party of Five).

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled the list of the seven films to be considered in the category of Achievement in Visual Effects, for the 78th Academy Awards.  The movies are (in alphabetical order): Batman Begins, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, King Kong, Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, War of the Worlds.  On January 25 the Visual Effects Award Nominating Committee will screen 15-minute clip reels of each of the seven movies and their votes will result in an Oscar nomination for the top three.  The Academy Awards will be handed out on March 5, 2006, and will air live on ABC at 8p, with the traditional red carpet arrivals pre-show leading into the Oscar telecast beginning at 4:30p.

2006 Writers Guild Awards Television and Radio Nominees for achievement in writing during the 2005 season have been announced, and this year includes three new TV categories for overall excellence in writing for: Dramatic Series, Comedy Series, and New Series.  The winners will be announced on Saturday, February 4, 2006 with simultaneous ceremonies on both the East and West coasts.  The nominated series in these categories were voted on by the members of both the WGA’s East and West coast guilds.  Kid/teen/youth related categories include: (episode title/series, writer, network)

(click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone with your answer. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
