Good morning, it’s Monday, December 10, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing. 

Talks between the WGA and the AMPTP broke down once again as the two sides seem further apart than ever on the issue of new media compensation. The writers say the AMPTP is sticking to its offer of a fixed $250 residual for unlimited one year streaming after a 6-week window of free use. They say producers are also refusing to offer a dime for made-for-the-web content. The producers group complained the WGA was making “unreasonable demands” and continued to insist writers are trying to get blood from a turnip, as the saying goes, asking for more than they actually receive in online revenues.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Disney Online International relaunched its content portal in the UK offering games, merchandise, video clips and social networking aimed at young adults. Like its U.S. counterpart Disney.com, Disney.co.uk employs strict parental chat controls and features Disney Xtreme Digital – inviting user to share content via embeddable widgets.  
 
On demand and online service Music Choice launched its Most Demanded ’07 feature showcasing the top-requested and highest-rated artists, music videos and original content of the year.
 
NYTimes.com added a new daily national politics email service featuring entries from The Caucus blog as well as original multimedia, video and graphs.
 

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Movie Gallery’s online service MovieBeam is shuttering once again on Dec. 15, according to reports. The service, acquired from Walt Disney Co. and others earlier this year, failed to gain a critical mass of subscribers, largely because of the $250 buy in required for its proprietary set top box.
 
The 48 Hour Film Project is inviting users to write, shoot and edit a “Machinima” style film on the virtual reality site Second Life beginning on Friday, January 11th at 4:00 pm Second Life Time  (that’s 7:00 pm ET.) The winning film will be screened at 48 Hour Film Project’s Filmapalooza event to be held at Cinequest in San Jose, CA, March 2008.
 
Rap mogul Russell Simmons-founded Diamond Empowerment Fund (D.E.F.), web design group Orange 32 and hosting company Treemo launched a new social networking site to spur community involvement in Africa-related issues.


~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Macrovision Corp. reached an agreement to acquire Gemstar-TV Guide for $2.8 billion in cash and stock. Plans are underway to combine Gemstar’s guide patents with Macrovision’s content distribution and delivery technology to create a one-stop PC/TV solution for digital homes. Macrovision also acquired All Media Guide Holdings last month, provider of metadata for music, movies and video games. 
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Coke unveiled a new digital content site MyCoke.com featuring music downloads, videos, wallpapers and screensavers. The portal also links to CC Metro, Coke’s new 3D virtual world community site powered by There.com, formerly known as Cokestudios. Don’t worry, all your “furni” dollars can be converted into “therebucks,” the site’s new currency.
 
ContextWeb’s ADSDAQ ad exchange is expanding its product line next year to offer content targeted text-based ads. Click here for a list of available categories.
 

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~
 

TitanTV Media SVP Mark Effron was upped to President and COO, reporting directly to CEO and founder Jack Perry. Mark will oversee all day-to-day operations including creation of original video programming, product development and affiliate sales.
 
Vuze, Inc.
added Jim Diaz as SVP/Ad Strategy and Sales and Chuck Bolkcom as VP/Advertising Sales.  Jim has handled sales, business development and operations for Industry.Net, Excite.com, Ask Jeeves, Turn Ad Network and TurnHere. Chuck, based in NYC, was Group Publisher at Broadcasting & Cable and Multichannel News magazines and a media industry consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers.
