Beatrice Arthur, 86, star of two iconic television series, died peacefully Saturday at home. Beatrice won Emmy Awards for her role in the 1970s television series Maude and also for her role as Dorothy in the 1980s series The Golden Girls. Both series were hits in their respective decades, with Maude especially maintaining high ratings despite dealing with notably controversial issues. Known for her commanding height and resonant, baritone voice and dry delivery, Bea entered television as an actress in her 50s after performing on Off-Broadway and Broadway productions since the 1940s and winning a Tony Award for supporting actress in the musical Mame. In 1971, Norman Lear created the role of Maude, an outspoken and liberal-minded cousin of Edith Bunker’s character. Maude’s sparring with Archie Bunker was so popular a spinoff show was created, debuting in 1972. During more recent years, she made television appearances on Curb Your Enthusiasm and Malcolm in the Middle. Bea is survived by two sons and two granddaughters.

This summer, ABC adds three new limited-run series affiliated with its ABC News’ Primetime franchise and is returning another, Primetime: What Would You Do?, per Variety:

  • Primetime: Family Secrets – examines stories behind hidden family truths. Series will air Tuesdays at 10p June 23 to July 21.
  • Primetime: Crime – focuses on famous criminal cases. Airs Wednesdays at 10p June 24 to September 9, with a few exceptions.
  • Primetime: The Outsiders – profiles unusual people. Airs Tuesdays at 10p July 28 to September 8
  • Primetime: What Would You Do? – no airdate has been set yet

NBC announced its summer series America’s Got Talent will now expand to a two-hour season premiere on June 23 at 9p and the start date of the new Great American Road Trip series has moved to July 7 at 8p. On America’s Got Talent, entertainer/producer/comedian Nick Cannon is the new host joining celebrity judges, David Hasselhoff, Piers Morgan and Sharon Osbourne. NBC is also toying with the idea of having British singing sensation Susan Boyle make an appearance on America’s Got Talent after her smashing audition on the UK version, though nothing has been confirmed. America’s Got Talent is produced by FremantleMedia North America and Simon Cowell’s SYCO Television. Great American Road Trip is produced by BBC Worldwide.

Through a unique joint partnership, both NBC and MTV will air the celebrity reality series I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! this summer from Granada America. The series premieres with a two-hour episode June 1 on NBC at 8p then one-hour episodes will continue airing June 2 to June 4 at 8p. More episodes will air on NBC Monday-Thursday from June 8 to June 18 at 8p with the final week’s episodes airing Monday-Wednesday, June 22-24 at 8p. Beginning June 7, MTV will air the previous week’s episodes in a marathon, as well as exclusive new footage and real time commentary from cast members. Additionally, both networks will cross-promote the series.

Furthermore, NBC announced a partial roster of celebrities participating in I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! Those confirmed include Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt (MTV’s The Hills), former NBA pro and TV personality, John Salley, supermodel and TV star Janice Dickinson, previous American Idol contestant Sanjaya Malakar, actor Stephen Baldwin, and pro wrestler and beauty queen Torrie Wilson. The other three celebrities and hosts for the show will be announced soon.

In a related story . . . even though a federal judge denied former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich the chance to travel to Costa Rica to be on NBC’s I’m a Celebrity . . . Get Me Out of Here! series, he may be involved with promoting the show somehow. Blagojevich was present last Friday when the seven participating celebrities so far were revealed in a press conference and NBC and series producer Granada America are working on a way to have Blagojevich be on the show without traveling to Costa Rica. “At least, if I can’t participate, I can help promote it. At this point I am looking for a new line of work. This is a chance to make a living and support my little girls,” Blagojevich said.
