Cynopsis: Kids!

10/19/07

Good morning. It’s Friday, October 19, 2007, and this is your first early morning.

On the topic of AOL’s kid and teen targeted services, KOL and RED, and the future of both sites following our item about the letting go of all but a few of the staff of both services, AOL has issued a statement explaining their continued commitment to its kid and teen services.  AOL explains, “neither web site is going away, but both are being aligned differently within the organization in terms of staff and programming.”  The company says that it will operate the sites with “existing teams internally and will involve some transfer as wells as termination of personnel.”  Furthermore AOL says it is in the midst of completing plans for redesigns for both KOL and RED, which it intends to launch in 1Q 2008.

Also cutting jobs this week, 1800 jobs to be exact, is the BBC.  The company says that the jobs will be eliminated according to its Delivering Creative Futures, a new six-year strategic plan to “re-prioritize resources.”  Some of the jobs being cut are those in the BBC kid’s area.  In fact, BBC Kid’s is facing about a 10% budget cut under this plan, according to MediaGuardian.co.uk.  According to the BBC Trust, which approved the new multi-year plan, the Delivering Creative Futures initiative is comprised of three primary concepts: more focus on quality; a digital step change (providing content from iPlayer to My BBC Radio); and a smaller BBC.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Rigel Entertainment will begin production on its teen motocross movie Metal Birding, which stars Corbin Bleu (High School Musical), this November in Vancouver.  The movie revolves around 19-year-old Cale (Bleu), a motocross racer, and his dream of winning a championship while he also works two jobs to help his family.  Directed by Jeff Woolnough (Taken, Dark Angel, Battlestar Galactica), Metal Birding is a Rigel Entertainment presentation in association with Up North Entertainment.  Rigel holds the worldwide rights to the picture.

Marblemedia and Blueprint Entertainment are teaming together to produce the teen/adult-targeted animated comedy series The Dating Guy (13×30).  Scheduled to bow on Teletoon in late 2008, The Dating Guy will air as part of the network’s teen/adult-aimed programming block, The Detour, which is available in both English and French.  Created by marblemedia partners Matt Hornburg and Mark Bishop, and developed with Teletoon, The Dating Guy follows a twenty-something guy, and his entourage, as he attempts to find love.  The series is marblemedia’s first animated series.  International distribution for The Dating Guy will be handled by Blueprint via Oasis International.

MORE KIDS STUFF

BabyFirstTV, the baby/infant/toddler targeted TV channel, is set to launch a new line of DVDs on November 1, 2008.  Based on its original programming, the initial DVDs will be a collection of six titles sold individually or in three different multi packs (two 3-DVDsets and one full six DVD set).  In addition to offering programming content and screen parenting tips, each DVD title offers a 2 month free subscription to BabyFirstTV (where available).  A full consumer marketing campaign will support the line launch and DVDs.

MARKETING/LICENSING

4Kids Entertainment and its subsidiary TC Digital Games have released the first round of the Chaotic Trading Card Game starter decks and booster packs exclusively to comic and hobby stores across the US and Canada.  The Chaotic OverWorld  The Dawn of Perim and UnderWorld  Te Dawn of Perim starter decks and the booster packs, The Dawn of Perim  Secrets will be available at retail from October 24, 2007.  The public beta version of the Chaotic website (chaoticgame.com) launches simultaneously on that day.  The Chaotic animated series currently airs in the US on the 4Kids TV Saturday morning block on Fox affiliate stations and daily on Jetix.

The Game Factory will release the newest Strawberry Shortcake game title, Strawberry Shortcake – The Four Seasons Cake for Nintendo DS on November 15, 2007.  Targeted to kids 3+, the game is rated E for Everyone.

Multiplatform kids service Kabillion launched a new Halloween-themed avatar program allowing kids to create scary digital masks of themselves. Kabillion is also featuring holiday themed programming, wallpapers and IM icons.

Scholastic and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have joined to release the new book The Magic School Bus Gets Cleaned Up.  Based on Scholastic’s Magic School Bus property, the book explores the various ways that kids/people can protect their lungs and the world from air pollution, particularly diesel emissions from school buses (and other vehicles) that can and have caused a range for kids.  And yes, Scholastic’s real life traveling Magic School Bus, a traveling interactive science lab for kids, does have a new pollution reducing diesel particulate filter installed, courtesy Caterpillar, Inc.  The Magic School Bus book series turns 20 this year, and the animated series based on those books turns 10.  The series airs on The Learning Channel and Discovery Kids, as well as being available on DVD.
