Good morning. It’s Friday, May 9, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing. While The CW has not announced anything, Variety reports the network is close to signing a deal with an unnamed media buying outfit, to sublet Sunday nights. The deal turns over the Sunday 7-10p block to an advertising entity who would then develop and produce the programming, and then sell the ad time. The move gives The CW latitude to focus all of its efforts on Monday-Friday, and effectively removes the headache of what has arguably been one of the networks toughest nights to program and sell. While this plan hasn’t been used in primetime since perhaps the early days of television, it is generally used on Saturday mornings where broadcast networks essentially lease their time to creators and producers of kids programming. In fact, as of this fall, The CW will turn over its Saturday mornings to 4Kids Entertainment. Saturday’s Premiere: Sunday’s Finales: A.I.M. IS CRITICAL!

Everything eventually comes around again as a new version of the classic series The Gong Show returns to television on Comedy Central. The Gong Show with Dave Attell will swing onto to the schedule July 17. The updated game show with celebrity judges rating quirky amateur acts is executive produced by Happy Madison Productions and Andrew Golder in association with Sony Pictures Television. Univision’s new novela Fuego en la Sangre delivered 2.97 million A18-49 viewers during its premiere week (4/28-5/2) and 5.1 million total viewers. In a cost cutting measure, Warner Bros. is shutting down two of its film divisions – Warner Independent Pictures (distributor of March of the Penguins) and Picturehouse (Pan’s Labyrinth). Last year, these two specialty divisions launched a total of 12 films, compared to the total of more than 600 total released films. Both studios have movies set to premiere in the upcoming months – Picturehouse has The Women debuting in September, and Warner Independent Pictures has Towelhead, about a Lebanese teen growing up in Texas. Spanish television network V-me added Big Cat Diary and Dinosaur Detectives to it natural history schedule. To date, V-me programs more than 13 hours of nature and adventure shows. The network is presented locally by public TV stations and is also carried on basic digital cable and digital broadcast in numerous cities and nationally via DIRECTV. Dinosaur Detectives (Dinodetectives) will air on Wednesdays at 6p, followed by Big Cat Diary (El Diario de Grandes Felinos) at 630p. Ever wonder why William Tell had to shoot an arrow through an apple on his son’s head? A new epic film, The Adventures of William Tell, produced Tell Productions, Ltd. with Fred Caruso and D. Constantine Conte as producers, will finally tell the full story of the Swiss hero. The $60 million film, set in Lucerne and the mountains and countryside of Switzerland, will begin pre-production this fourth quarter for a spring 2010 release. So far, Swiss-native and granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin, Kiera Chaplin has been cast as William Tell’s wife. Now, who for Tell himself …. A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM AMC

Gretta Monahan, fashionista/stylist and owner of Boston-based Grettacole Spas Salons and Boutiques will join Tim Gunn as his “fashion accomplice” for season two of Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style which will debut later this year. Whoopi Goldberg will host The 62nd Annual Tony Awards, airing live from Radio City Music Hall in New York on June 15 at 8p on CBS. VH1 is in development on an untitled project that will look at the lives of eight famous male teen heartthrobs from the 1980s and 1990s. While living together, the eight celebrities will work with a life coach/therapist and industry professionals to decide if they can resurrect a career in the entertainment industry or follow a different path. The series is a co-production of Bischoff Hervey Entertainment and 3 Ball Productions with Scott Baio as one of the executive producers. Alexander Payne, who won an Oscar for writing the feature film Sideways, will cross over to television as Director for HBO‘s comedy pilot Hung. The project is being written by creator Dmitry Lipkin and Colette Burson. ~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~
CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Who says you don’t get second chances in life? After Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer promised the company had moved on past its pursuit of Yahoo, Microsoft’s Chief Strategy Officer Craig Mundie extended an olive leaf, telling Reuters “we might reconsider” at $33 a share. On the other hand, Microsoft released the nominees on Thursday of its rival slate who were to stand for election in the event of a proxy fight. This seems to indicate that if Microsoft is willing to reconsider, there will be no party crashing. It will have to be invited back to the ball. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) takes tweens/teens 13-16 on its latest undercover shopping spree to see if the underagers (all unaccompanied by adults) were able to purchase Mature rated games, R-rated movie tickets and DVDs and the like. The answer overall is good news, with the undercover kids being turned down more often than ever, in most categories, since the FTC conducted its first such survey in 2000. This time around tween/teens were successful just 20% of the times they tried to buy Mature-rated video games (or turned down 80% of the time), which is a big improvement from 2006 when they were able to buy such titles 42% of the time (or turned down 58% of the time), and in 2000 when they were able to buy M-rated games about 85% of the time. As for DVD/home video retailers in the survey this year, the young shoppers had success buying R-rated titles 47% and unrated DVD titles 51% of the time, down a good deal from 71% in both categories in 2006. The results were not quite as good for movie theaters where the undercover kids were able to purchase tickets to R-rated movies 35% of the time, which though an improvement over 2000 is just about the same as in 2003. Full edition: CYN KIDS. CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: An Italian version of Al Gore and Joel Hyatt’s Current TV went live in Italy yesterday on Sky Italia. In addition to the localized, Italian-language channel, the endeavor will also have an online component with Tommaso Tessarolo managing the new channel while Davide Scalenghe heads up production.
