Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, May 22, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The Wiggles join their new US home on Sprout this summer.  On Monday, August 24, 2009, The Wiggles debut on Sprout as hosts of a new three-hour morning show block, which will be filmed at The Wiggles studio in Australia beginning next month, and will air on Sprout daily 6a-9a.  Additionally, Sprout will air existing Wiggles episodes throughout the day beginning this August.  Wiggles games, videos, and coloring pages among other things, will be available on SproutOnline.com/ TheWiggles in mid July, which coincides with the beginning of the US leg of the group’s tour, Wiggles Go Bananas Live!

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network will premiere four new live-action series next month as part of its CN Real programming initiative.  Wednesday nights, debuting June 17, the network will introduce two new half-hour reality/adventure series featuring real kids with the debut of The Othersiders at 8p, followed by Survive This at 8:30p.  Premiering Saturday, June 20, are two game shows featuring kids, BrainRush at 8p and the new competition series Destroy Build Destroy at 8:30p.  Additionally, though not a live-action series, Cartoon network will premiere the new Total Drama series, Total Drama Action, on Thursday, June 11 at 9p.

Disney Channel kicks off its summer lineup, Summer of Stars on Friday, May 29, with range of special event episodes, new double-feature movie and programming marathons, all of which will feature the network’s stars.

  • Friday nights will feature The Suite Life on Deck, Phineas and Ferb and Wizards of Waverly Place.  The Friday block will showcase four new vampire-themed episodes with special guest stars, and the upcoming Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana, a 90-minute special which combines three of Disney Channel’s series, as well as feature films on select Fridays.
  • Saturdays from May 30, the network will offer double-feature movies, including a mix of TV movies and feature films.
  • Sundays, beginning June 7, the network features its series Sonny With a Chance, Hannah Montana and Jonas, and feature films.
  • Disney Channel Original Movie premieres for the summer include Princess Protection Program, staring Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato, on Friday, June 26 at 8p, and Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie in August (date TBA).

MARKETING/LICENSING

NASCAR and Original Appalachian Artworks, the creator of Cabbage Patch Kids, team with JAKKS Pacific to create NASCAR Kids, a line of Cabbage Patch kids in the likeness of NASCAR drivers.  The first NASCAR ‘Kid is based on top driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. and will be introduced by the real life Earnhardt Jr. tonight, May 22, on QVC‘s For Race Fans Only broadcast at 8p.  The next doll in the line will be based on NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon, and will be available this fall 2009.  The NASCAR ‘Kids will be produced and distributed by Cabbage Patch Kids master toy licensee JAKKS Pacific.  The dolls retails for $45.12. 4Kids Entertainment represents the Cabbage Patch Kids brand as licensing agent for OAA.

Sesame Workshop and Giftventure, a creator of personal treasure hunts for kids, enter into a licensing agreement that will create the Sesame Street Giftventure line.  The new Sesame Street Giftventure will include three illustrated poster-sized letters featuring a Sesame Street character chosen by the customer, such as Elmo or Big Bird, and a personalized game or puzzle, which when solved reveals the location of a hidden gift.

YTV‘s (Canada) interactive, entertainment summer road show WOW! heads out on its 11th summer tour across Canada from June 4 until Labor Day.  This year the summer tour features Hasbro’s Camp Nerf Dart Tag Capture the Flag!, as well as distribution of collectible items from Nerf, and various other activities.  Fans can look for the WOW! vehicles as they make their way from even to event interacting with kids along the way including offering a sneak peek at YTV’s upcoming programming.  Information about the summer WOW! tour, including video blogs, tour dates and locations can be found at www.ytv.com/wow .

Classic Media appoints Stella Projects to manage the intellectual property rights to Where’s Wally? in Australia and New Zealand.  Under the two-year deal sees Stella Projects will look to secure distribution deals for Where’s Wally? consumer products for current licensees and identify new retail opportunities within the territory.  Stella will also be responsible for targeting third-party promotional partners and will coordinate strategic marketing activities for the brand, with a particular focus on the digital space. Originally published in 1987 as Where’s Wally?, the character and brand is known by various names around the world including Where’s Waldo in the US and Canada, Willy in Norway, Walter in Germany among others.

THQ Inc. is set to release its new SpongeBob’s Truth or Square this fall as part of the celebration of the 10th Anniversary year of Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants.  The game will feature a new shape-shifting capability that will allow players to transform SpongeBob into zany objects.  SpongeBob’s Truth or Square is currently being developed by Heavy Iron Studios for the Wii, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360 and PSP.

Virtual worlds may be a niche phenomenon now but the kids demo in particular is increasingly embracing such environments, according the eMarketer. Currently about 6 million or 37% of online K3-11 visit virtual words. That number will jump to 9.6 million or 54% by 2013. That’s more than double the penetration expected by the teen demo, expected to reach 25% by 2013.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Hasbro‘s Board of Directors names Deb Thomas as its new CFO.  Thomas will report directly to COO, David Hargreaves, who had been serving as Hasbro’s COO and CFO prior to Thomas’ appointment.  An 11-year Hasbro veteran, Thomas most recently served as SVP and head of Corporate Finance.

Heather Kenyon is appointed to the new position of VP/Project Development and Sales, Starz Animation, which is a division of Starz Media.  Kenyon, who will be based at Film Roman’s headquarters in Burbank, will work with both Starz Animation Toronto and Film Roman to expand its slate of work-for-hire and proprietary animated product.  Prior to joining Starz Animation, she headed series development for Cartoon Network, managed production information at Hanna-Barbera Cartoons and served as Editor-in-Chief of Animation World Network.
