Cynopsis: Kids!

03/06/09

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 6, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Laika, Inc. names Travis Knight as President and CEO.  Knight succeeds Dale Wahl (65) who is stepping down and will now serve as Vice-Chairman until his retirement in October 2009, and on a more temporary basis he will fill the role of EVP/Business Operations and CFO.  Knight has served on the Laika board and been head of Animation since 2007; he was also one of the lead animators on the studio’s stop-motion 3D animated feature Coraline.  Knight previously toiled for Vinton Studios, which was acquired by Philip H. Knight and renamed Laika.  The studio has also appointed Claire Jennings, producer of Coraline and Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were Rabbit, to the new position of President/Entertainment.  Philip H. Knight (Travis’ Dad) is Laika’s owner and Chairman of the board.  The senior Knight is also Chairman and Co-Founder of Nike.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

MGM acquires the original screenplay Once Upon a Time …, per THR.  The comedy is being written by Charles Vignola, Kevin Marcus and Bradley Marcus, and will be produced by Darryl Taja, who manages Vignola, through his Epidemic Pictures.  Vignola will serve as an executive producer.  The movie is described as a fairy tale in the vein of The Princess Bride and Shrek.

Korea-based CJ Entertainment enters into a co-production deal with Canada’s ToonBox Entertainment for the 3D animated TV series Blip (26×30), with plans also underway for a feature film, per Variety.  With a production budget of $9.1 million, the futuristic action series revolves around the adventures of a robot.  CJ Entertainment holds the worldwide sales and distribution rights to the TV series, as well as the worldwide theatrical and DVD rights for the movie.  Additionally, CJ Entertainment will handle the licensing and merchandising rights for consumer electronics and toys based on the property.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon will premiere the new Naked Brothers Band hour-long TV movie Naked Idol on March 14, at 8p.  When The Naked Brothers Band is left without a bass player, they hold open auditions for a replacement.  The movie, which features the debut of a new original song The World as We Know it Today, also includes guest star appearances by noted bassists David Desrosiers of Simple Plan and Tobin Esperance of Papa Roach, as well as comedian Dave Attell.

Toei Animation‘s animated series Pretty Cure joins the lineup on YTV (Canada) on Friday, March 6 at 7:30a.  Episodes from season one of the series will be repeated on Fridays at 3:30p and Saturdays at 7a.

Just ahead of MIP-TV (March 30-April), The Jim Henson Company inks a new TV deals for its animated preschool property Sid the Science Kid, including its first European broadcast partners.  Public broadcasters picking up Sid the Science Kid include France 5 (France) and RTP (Portugal).  Additionally, the series has also been licensed to: Selecta Vision (Spain), which will handle all broadcast sales and licensing and merchandising efforts in the territory; in the Middle East it is picked up by Noga Communications (Israel) and broadcaster Al Jazeera; and Mexico’s Exim Licensing will handle all broadcast sales and licensing and merchandising efforts in the territory; and American Forces Network picks up the series for broadcast outside the US.  Sid the Science Kid airs in the US as part of the PBS Kids block.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Scholastic is inviting tween girls to join author Meg Cabot (The Princess Diaries, All-American Girl etc) and comedian/actress Caroline Rheas for the live webcast Allie’s Finkle’s Super Sleepover on March 12 at 7:30p.  Streamed live from the Scholastic Auditorium in NYC, the event is designed to introduce tweens to the third book in Cabot’s Allie Finkle’s Rules for Girls Series, Best Friends and Drama Queens, which will be released on March 10.  Scholastic has teamed with Girls’ Life magazine and its site Girlslife.com to stream the live webcast.  Reading Group Choices, a website which selects books and discussion topics for reading groups, will also host the webcast on its site. Additionally, Scholastic is hosting a sweepstakes tied into the event.

BBC Worldwide teams with the UK’s Picturehouse Cinemas for a series of three sets of movie screenings at 18 theaters for preschoolers and their parents beginning this month.  Each screening will feature one of the episodes form the latest In the Night Garden DVD, Look At That!, which is set for release on DVD in the UK from March 23.
