More than 4.5 million U.S. households – or 3.9% of all homes – are still not ready for the pushed-back transition to all-digital broadcasting, according to Nielsen. This is an improvement of more than 570,000 homes since Nielsen last reported readiness status in mid-February. The Albuquerque – Santa Fe market continues to be the least prepared, with just under 10% of households completely unready and at risk of losing all television programming if the transition occurred today.

Digital Public Square is the brainchild of Vivek Kundra, the 34-year-old CTO of the District of Columbia who was just named the nation’s first Chief Information Officer, in charge of dragging the government into the digital age. In it Vivek applies a range of useful tools designed to empower the public and help government run more efficiently. Many of the tools are the result of an “Apps for Democracy” contest launched last year to encourage developers to dream up open source applications of use to the city. D.C. Historic Tours is a Google Maps creation combining Flickr photos with Wikipedia entries providing facts about the history of the city. iLive.at prioritizes information by neighborhood for new residents including crime data, conveniences, public transport, etc. The Park It DC app, also embeddable as a widget, allows you to check a specific area in the District for parking information. It will be interesting to see how the young man can deliver on the Obama administration’s crowdsourcing promises. One of Vivek’s first moves as CTO of the District was to post government contracts up for bid on YouTube. Halliburton – if you’re reading this – you may want to find some web video experts.
