CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

03/17/06

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 17, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

After four years, Discovery Kids and NBC have mutually decided to call it quits on their Saturday morning partnership.  The three hour Discovery Kids on NBC programming block will run until this fall, with no word as yet on what NBC will program in its place. The Discovery Kids Channel, currently available in 43 million homes, will run all of the Discovery Kids on NBC programming, some of which was already airing on both networks, as of this fall.  The channel will roll out these shows as well as some new specials and series; though it is unclear if there will be a new branded block or not.  Under the agreement Discovery leased the Saturday morning real estate from NBC or upwards of $6 million.

The Entertainment Software Association has petitioned a US District Court asking the State of Illinois be required to pay ESA’s $644,545 in legal fees for its failed effort to enact a law that would have banned the sale of violent video games in Illinois.  The ESA claims Illinois Governor Blagojevich moved forward on the law knowing that it would ultimately be found unconstitutional.  In December 2005 a US District Judge for the Northern District of Illinois issued a permanent injunction against the implementation of the new law, declaring it was indeed unconstitutional.

Disney Channel UK has inked a carriage pact with the newly combined NTL Telewest, for a group of channels including Disney Channel, Playhouse Disney and Disney Cinemagic.  The Disney Cinemagic channel, which features recent Disney animated movies as well as the classic ones, launched yesterday in the UK.  Under the deal content will be offered across linear TV, video-on-demand, and broadband.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Indie film studio Lionsgate has acquired the worldwide rights to Tyler Perry’s next movie Daddy’s Little Girl.  Perry (Madea’s Family Reunion) will write and direct the movie with Perry and Reuben Cannon serving as Producers with Lionsgate.  Daddy’s Little Girl is about a young successful female attorney falls in love with a single father of three who also happens to work as a janitor in her office building.  Despite her father’s disapproval, love wins out.  Production is slated to begin in June of this year, with release set for February 2007.

Kelly Monaco of General Hospital and winner of Dancing with the Stars (season 1) and Tom Bergeron will be the hosts of The 33rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, which will air Friday, April 28 at 8p (tape delayed to the West Coast) on ABC live from Hollywood’s Kodak Theater.  This year marks the first time in the Daytime Emmys will be broadcast from the West Coast.  The show will be produced by White Cherry Entertainment and Ricky Kirshner and Glenn Weiss will serve as Executive Producers.  Meredith Vieira will host The Creative Arts Daytime Emmy Awards, which includes some kids categories, will be presented at ceremonies on Saturday, April 22, one each in NYC and LA.  Additionally, this year Carroll Spinney, the puppet master who has brought Sesame Street’s Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch to life for 37 years will be given a lifetime achievement award.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The Second JammX Kids All Star Dance Special will air on Kids’ WB! Sunday, March 19, 7-8p.  The hip-hop dancing JammX Kids will be joined by Queen Latifah, Shaquille O’Neal, Randy Jackson, Raven, JoJo and Aly & AJ as they audition audience members to become a JammX Kid.

Disney Channel’s Playhouse Disney programming block will highlight more music from a range of artists in the coming months.

  • On April 17 Dan Zane‘s new music video Catch That Train will debut.  Three additional Zane videos will premiere throughout the week.  Four older Zane music videos currently air during the block.
  • In May, songs by They Might Be Giants will premiere in the upcoming Playhouse Disney series Mickey Mouse Clubhouse; the series theme song, Hot Dog! was written and is performed by the band.  They Might Be Giants will also perform in a series of original music videos, Here Come the ABCs, which aim to help preschoolers learn the alphabet.  The band is already heard on the series Higglytown Heroes.
  • Songs and music by Genevieve Goings will also debut this May during the short-form series Choo Choo Soul.
  • Los Lobos will be featured in Playhouse Disney’s new series Handy Mandy, the bilingual series launches in September.

Clearances from Steve Rotfeld Productions’ series:

  • Awesome Adventures and Wild About Animals have been renewed in 80% of the US.  Both series are FCC friendly educational and informational programs.  Clearances include a Fox O&O Group deal as well as major affiliate clearances in 27 of the top 30 markets.
  • WHADDYADO, also an FCC friendly program, has been cleared in 70+% of the country; including a CBS O&O group deal and selected Fox, Raycom and Clear Channel stations.

Taffy Entertainment inked pre-MipTV agreements with Australia’s Nickelodeon and Network Ten and Germany’s KI.KA for the Mike Young Productions (MYP) kid targeted series I Got A Rocket!  Taffy is the distribution company for MoonScoop and MYP.

MIPTV 2006, April 3-7:

  • KOL, AOL’s kid targeted service, will be offering its animated properties including Princess Natasha (40 x 5 min), SKWOD (26 x 11 min), Kung Fu Academy (20 x 5 min), Pilar’s Adventures (20 x 5 min/preschool) and from AOL’s Red, the teen targeted service, is Chubby Butter (52 x 1 min/teens).
  • Two of Mike Young Productions’ new original shows, Growing Up Creepie and Dive Olly Dive! will be part of Taffy Entertainment‘s offerings at the market.  In addition, the company will bring in Sunwoo Entertainment’s MixMaster: King Of Cards, Cosmic Quantum Ray, El Corazon, Jakers!, Season 3 of The Adventures of Piggley Winks and Season 2 of both Pet Alien and ToddWorld.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Jack Black fans and those who want to get some insider information from the actor on-set while he is filming his upcoming Nickelodeon and Paramount movie Nacho Libre, can now get that through a series of free video podcasts available beginning this week on iTunes and Quicktime.com.  The video podcasts will continue to roll out over the next 10 weeks, with new podcasts released every Tuesday, leading up to the June 2 release of the movie.  Black’s podcasts, which he filmed himself in his movie trailer on the set of the movie, are available exclusively at iTunes and Quicktime.com during the week in they are released, and then will be release all over the internet the following Monday.

Al Ovadia & Associates has inked a raft of new licensing deals for The Annoying Thing aka Crazy Frog.  A second Crazy Frog album is in the works.  Crazy Frog music videos are currently airing on Cartoon Network.
