Cynopsis: Kids!
3/16/07
Good morning. It’s Friday, March 16, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Stan Lee Media, Inc. filed a $5 billion lawsuit against Marvel Entertainment yesterday in US District Court in NY, according to Marvel. In the suit, as reported by Marvel, Stan Lee Media claims it is shares co-ownership of some of Marvel’s superhero characters. Marvel responded by saying the suit is without merit. Stan Lee, the comic book creator/writer/legend, is no longer affiliated with the recently revived Stan Lee Media. In fact, Lee, whose current company called POW Entertainment, is suing Stan Lee Media concerning management issues.
Nickelodeon and Wal-Mart have completed a deal making Wal-Mart the first and exclusive retail sponsor for the 20th Annual Kids’ Choice Awards, airing March 31. Under the deal, ads and promotions will appear across Nickelodeon’s various platforms (e.g. TV, Nickelodeon magazine and Nick online). Currently running on the network are several Wal-Mart spots featuring animated elves, Wally and Marty, building excitement for the event and Kids’ Choice areas and products in stores. Additionally, Wal-Mart is sponsoring the new Kids’ Choice Favorite DVD category, which includes the chance for kids to vote for their top DVD ( www.nick.com/walmart ).
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Tigress Productions, an independent producer, will produce two natural history programs focusing UK conservation issues, for the BBC. The two specials, Saving Planet Earth London and Saving Planet Earth The West, will be fall under the BBC’s noted Saving Planet Earth series and will air in 2007. Saving Planet Earth content has been featured on BBC’s kids channel CBBC.
Cate Blanchett has joined the cast of the new Indiana Jones, the fourth in the series, according to Hollywood Reporter. Interesting, right? No word yet about what character Blanchett will play, or on much else to do with the project for that matter. Lucasfilm is producing the Indiana Jones movie, with Steven Spielberg directing the production from a screenplay by David Koepp. Paramount plans to release the movie worldwide on May 22, 2008.
MORE KIDS STUFF
What is green, wise, and will be hanging around on St. Patrick’s Day this Saturday, March 17? Don’t be gross! Why, that’d be The Great Gazoo in a six episode mini-marathon of The Flintstones’, running tomorrow on Boomerang, 9a-12p, and once again 8-11p. The Great Gazoo was featured in the 1965-66 season of The Flintstones. Lending his voice to the great little green one, The Great Gazoo, is Harvey Korman, in some of greatest work aside of course for the character of Mother Marcus on The Carol Burnett Show.
Nick Jr. will premiere new episodes of the preschool series The Backyardigans and Blue’s Room this month in back-to-back premiere weeks. Four new episodes of The Backyardigans will debut March 19 23 at 10:30a, and the following week, March 26-30, four new episodes of Blue’s Room will bow. During each of the show’s respective premiere week, Nick Jr. Video, Nick Jr.’s broadband video service, will feature clips of songs from The Backyardigans and ‘instant replays’ of each new Blue’s Room episode following its premiere.
FX has picked up the cable rights to the 20th Century Fox film Night at the Museum starring Ben Stiller. The package also included three other films – Deck the Halls, Date Movie and The Marine. According to Variety, the total package will cost the cable net approx $30 million in licensing fees. The films go to FX immediately after the HBO pay TV window, which puts it in 2nd qtr 2009. Other theatrical films picked up by FX thru previous deals include X-Men: The Last Stand, The Departed, The Devil Wears Prada and Ice Age: The Meltdown, among others.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc., has partnered with Texas-based Nexgym, a kid/teen targeted fitness gym, to make its Dance Dance Revolution video game available at Nexgym locations. Konami will also promote DDR tournament events at existing Nexgym locations and in connection with the openings of new Nexgym franchises. Ten new Nexgym locations are slated to open in Texas in 2007. Konami has completed similar deals in other states including with the West Virginia public school system and 24 Hour Fitness.
STONE SOUP
The Toy Industry Association has changed the date of its Fall Toy Preview, which for the first year will take place in Dallas, Texas. The new dates for the 2007 Fall Toy Preview are October 9-12, 2007, after the Canada’s Thanksgiving holiday. The original dates announced were October 8-11.
Monday’s the big day — the launch of our new daily edition – Cyn opsis: Digital . This edition will focus on the business of digital and broadband as it relates to the television industry. And we’ll have it for you as an email (naturally) as well as a daily early morning podcast (also naturally), voiced by our own David Lawrence (also the voice behind the CynKids daily podcast).
