Cynopsis: Kids!
01/02/09
Good morning. It’s Friday, January 2, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
While we were away – Time Warner Cable and Viacom continued to have difficulty coming to an agreement on a new carriage deal for Viacom’s MTV Networks‘ 19 channels, which of course includes Nickelodeon and Noggin and so on, for TWC and Bright House Networks subscribers in major markets including NY, LA, and Orange County and Raleigh among several others. Things went public on Tuesday December 30, just ahead of the 12:01a January 1, 2009 deadline, with press releases and accusations flying, and then Viacom taking out ads in newspapers and online warning customers that the channels might no longer be available to them, including one that featured a crying Dora the Explorer hanging onto a scared-looking Boots (her buddy) that read, “Why is Dora crying? Time Warner Cable is Taking Dora Off the air tonight! Along with 19 of your favorite channels.” The ad offered phone numbers and encouraged viewers to call and complain. Additionally, a similar message scrolled across the bottom of the screen on at least some of the MTV Networks. Alas, in a release issued January 1, at 2:54a, the two titans announced they had reached a deal “in principle” that would see the renewal of carriage for Viacom’s MTV Networks, with agreement expected to be finalized over the next week.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Disney won’t serve as co-producer with Walden Media for future Chronicles of Narnia movies, per the Wall Street Journal. Disney pointed to “budgetary considerations and other logistics” as to why it won’t finance the films as it has with Walden Media’s previous two Narnia pictures, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005, which grossed $745 million worldwide) and The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008, which grossed $419 million worldwide). So, will there be more Narnia pictures with a different studio providing financing? According to the report Walden is looking for other partners for the third movie, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which is slated for production in this year and release in May 2010.
Director Frank Miller and Odd Lot Entertainment are partnering to produce a new movie version of comic book series Buck Rogers, per The Hollywood Reporter. Odd Lot is working to secure the rights to Buck Rogers from Nu Image/Millennium, which acquired the rights from Dille Trust earlier this year. Miller will write and direct the movie, which will be on the darker side per the report.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Nickelodeon launches UPickDaily .com, a new kid-centric social networking site featuring kid user-generated content. In addition to sharing their own creative content on the site, kids can also vote, poll, and chat on a range of topics, submit or take quizzes and blog etc. on the site. Designed to reflect the ever-changing interests of kids, UPickDaily.com is part of the Nickelodeon Kids and Family‘s portfolio of digital sites and will be moderated at all times.
Planet Live Ltd and MCM Net, a digital agency, have teamed to create the K6-14 aimed virtual world Planet Soccer Live, which entered its soft-launch phase in December. The UK-based site is designed to let users explore and interact with a football stadium, training ground and other rooms, as well as featuring football (soccer) related single player games, a live chat function. Additionally, users can personalize their own characters and design their own space, shop for haircuts, balls, and other equipment using their ‘soccer dollars.’ Membership is free, but a premium membership unlocks key features such as multiplayer games, emoticons, character personalization and access to designer furniture to design your pad.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) Germany completes two, two-year deal renewals for Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants with Comma Publications (season bags) and Mepal Rosti (lunch boxes, beakers, drinking bottles), with products available across Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Additionally, NVCP in the Netherlands inks a deal with Jaguar, a fresh produce company, to sell SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer branded mandarins through October 2009, which are available at Plus Supermarket, Jumbo and Linders supermarkets.
BBC Worldwide appoints Martin Yaffe International as the master toy licensee for the new animated preschool series Harry and Toto. Harry and Toto currently airs on CBeebies, which has ordered a second season of episodes. With BBC Worldwide Children’s and Licensing’ major licensing effort for the series set to bow in fall/winter 2009, Martin Yaffe International will introduce a plush items and lunchware in 2009, followed in 2010 by toy figures, play sets, vehicles and other wheeled toys. Created by Paul Shuttleworth of Handle and Sprout Productions, the series revolves around Harry the Hare and Toto the Tortoise as they explore the world of opposites.
Licensing agency Kidz Entertainment/EEMC is named to rep Miffy across Nordic and Eastern Europe. Retailer, KappAhl, begin the licensing program exclusively last fall with a range of apparel for kids and young teens. The licensing program will expand to include categories such as toys, publishing, stationery, bags and accessories.
