Cynopsis: Kids!
02/27/09

Good morning. It’s Friday, February 27, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Entertainment Rights (ER), which owns Postman Pat, He-Man and Where’s Waldo among others, is in “advanced negotiations” with several suitors to purchase its subsidiaries or business and assets.  In an update to shareholder ER explained that the bidders are completing their due diligence to complete the an imminent deal and, “The offers are at a level which would be acceptable to the Board and to the Group’s lender, which at which there is no prospect of recovering all of the outstanding debt.”  Additionally, ER’s lenders intend to extend their short term funding and will continue support of the company after February 28 to complete a sales or restructuring.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Warner Bros. and production companies The Kennedy/Marshall Co. and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way are looking into remake The NeverEnding Story, according to THR.  Though in the early stages of consideration, a remake would give the movie a modern twist.  Based on the German book by Michael Ende, the original 1984 movie adaptation of The NeverEnding Story was directed by Wolfgang Petersen and was followed by a sequel in 1990, which was directed by George Miller, and a third movie in 1996.

Eric Brevig is set to direct a 3D mixed CG and live-action movie adaptation of Hanna-Barbera‘s Yogi Bear, per THR.  Brevig, who directed the 3D movie version of Journey to the Center of the Earth, is also a veteran visual effects supervisor noted for his work on movies such as Men in Black and The Day After Tomorrow.  Prior to this, the Yogi Bear movie was a 2D project that was to be directed by Ash Brannon (Surf’s Up).

MORE KIDS STUFF

The Spectacular Spider-Man joins the Disney XD channel line-up with three back-to-back episodes on Monday, March 23, 7:30p.  Based on Marvel Entertainment’s super hero and produced by Sony’s Culver Entertainment, the second season of animated series, featuring all new episodes, will bow in summer 2009.  The network will air The Spectacular Spider-Man in its regular time on Mondays at 7:30p beginning March 30.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Hasbro and Performance Designed Products (PDP) expands their relationship by signing a new multi-year international license agreement, under which PDP will create a new line of video gaming accessories and products for gaming devices, as well as now including iPods and cell phones.  Upcoming projects for 2009 include video gaming accessories for the Nintendo DS, Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 2 and 3 systems. These projects will include a new line of products for the Nerf and Littlest Pet Shop brands, as well as products supporting the upcoming movie and video game launches of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and G.I. King Features Syndicate teams with Spanish retailer Mango to create a line of five t-shirts featuring comic/carton heroine Olive Oyl, of Popeye fame.  The Olive Oyl shirts are available in Mango stores worldwide beginning this month.  This deal comes on the heels of King Features apparel deal with Miss Sixty for the Olive Oyl brand.

Sony Pictures Television, Marvel Entertainment and McDonald’s offer a The Spectacular Spider-Man branded Happy Meal beginning today through March 26 at participating restaurants in the US.  The US Happy Meal features eight different action figures based on characters in the series.  The promotion will then roll out in 10,000+ McDonald’s restaurants around the world throughout March, April and May in Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand.
