Good morning! It’s Thursday, and this is your monthly Gaming Brief.
Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC has made the title the talk of the games industry once again, with content creators galore and millions of players at home diving back into Elden Ring both before the expansion was released and in the week since.

Elden Ring, hailed as one of the greatest games of all time following its February 2022 release, surpassed 25 million copies sold about a week before Shadow of the Erdtree released on June 21. The DLC hasn’t been as sublimely received as the base game was, in part due to players’ complaints about the difficulty of the new content, but that hasn’t stopped the game from drawing nearly 800,000 peak players on Steam, with hundreds of thousands more jumping into the fray on console platforms.

Developer From Software’s latest triumph is more a new game than an expansion, and game director Hidetaka Miyazaki told The Verge that while Shadow of the Erdtree’s difficulty might pose a challenge for some, the obstacles are part of the studio’s design philosophy – even though a mainstream or casual gaming audience might not be used to that ideology.

“Traditionally we’ve always liked the higher difficulty curve type of games and experiences,” Miyazaki said, “but I think that nature in and of itself alienates a good portion of the game playing audience.”

GAMING NEWS

Nintendo is gearing up for some massive releases, though the elephant in the room of the Switch 2 wasn’t addressed during this month’s Nintendo Direct showcase. That said, a few Nintendo mainstays are getting new looks, including the iconic Legend of Zelda and Metroid series. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will make Zelda the standalone playable protagonist for the first time, while Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, a game that’s been years in the making for franchise fans, has a release window set for 2025 alongside a gameplay trailer revealed during the Direct.

The Xbox Games Showcase was no slouch, either, with multiple announcements that had fans and analysts calling it one of the best Xbox reveal sessions in recent years. From a Gears of War prequel to upcoming releases for the Call of Duty, Doom, Fable, Perfect Dark, State of Decay and World of Warcraft franchises, Xbox brought more to the table than expected while also bringing recently acquired Activision, Blizzard, and Bethesda announcements to the showcase. The sheer volume packed into a little under two hours felt akin to the E3 reveals of old, and fans will probably still be buzzing when some of this recently announced content hits shelves in a few months’ time.

Riot Games’ Netflix series, Arcane, will end following the upcoming release of Season 2 scheduled for November. A trailer for Season 2, released in early January, showcased what’s to come as well as the climax of one of the most critically acclaimed examples of games jumping into the traditional entertainment sphere. Arcane, along with programming like The Last of Us and the Fallout TV show, have paved the way for gaming IP to shine not just on the big screen but in at-home (and bingeable) formats too. And while Arcane might be wrapping up, there’s plenty of lore left for Riot to tap if it’s looking to get into the streaming game again.

The long-awaited sequel to Dragon Age: Inquisition is on the way, publisher Electronic Arts revealed at Summer Games Fest. Dragon Age: The Veilguard, scheduled to release later this year on current gen PlayStation, Xbox and Windows platforms, will bring to a close a decade-long wait for fans who were hit with a massive plot twist at the end of Inquisition, which released in 2014. The title is a good shot for EA to turn around its recent misfortunes with non-sports sim releases and, alongside the release of EA SPORTS FC and the return of College Football 25, earn some noteworthy wins in Q2 and Q3 2024.

Media evaluation firm Comscore and in-game advertising platform Anzu are expanding their partnership to further enhance Anzu’s ability to provide in-flight measurement of in-game advertising campaign performance. The deal, which brings Comscore’s Comscore Campaign Ratings system to the platform, will deepen the opportunities for brands to evaluate the incremental reach of their campaigns, according to a statement.

FIFA is bringing back the FIFAe World Cup with Rocket League as its flagship title, a pivot that will shift FIFA’s competitive gaming efforts from traditional sports sims to the vehicle-based soccer showdown. The move, which is in part a result of FIFA’s split from Electronic Arts and the lack of a suitable soccer sim in the gaming marketplace for FIFA to leverage, will bring together the best players from 16 countries. Details on the actual FIFAe World Cup, including if it will be an offline tournament, locations, and more, are still to be announced.

One of the most popular women in content creation, Kaitlyn “Amouranth” Siragusa, is now the co-owner of Wildcard Gaming, a North American gaming lifestyle and esports organization. The investment from the streamer, who boasts nearly 15 million followers across her social platforms, will be used to open a performance center for Wildcard Gaming’s competitive players and support the expansion of its programs. The move is the latest example of content creators diving into esports, including major names like Jeremy “Disguised Toast” Wang, Ludwig “Ludwig” Ahgren, and more in the past year.

Games Week Georgia is back for 2024, with gaming festival DreamHack, GirlGamer Atlanta, and multiple summits planned from Oct. 1-6 for the weeklong tech, gaming, and esports showcase. Games Week Georgia, which took place Dec. 11-17 of last year alongside the same marquee programming, will be put on by Skillshot Media and Ghost Gaming, two Atlanta games industry staples, in partnership with the Metro Atlanta InnovATL2024 initiative.

MIDNIGHT SOCIETY STUDIO SEPARATES FROM EMBATTLED STREAMER

Former Twitch streamer and game studio Midnight Society co-founder Guy “Dr Disrespect” Beahm is no longer associated with the studio following allegations that Beahm sent inappropriate messages to a minor in 2017.

Beahm, who confirmed he sent messages to a minor during that time in an X (formerly Twitter) post Tuesday, was banned from Twitch in June 2020 months after signing a multi-million dollar deal to stream exclusively on the platform. The permanent ban was allegedly a result of the messages to the minor, which were sent over Twitch’s now-discontinued Whisper direct messaging feature.

The news sent shockwaves through both the gaming and entertainment communities throughout the past week, from a former Twitch employee whistleblower publicly revealing the allegations to additional anonymous corroborations, Midnight Society’s disassociation from Beahm, and finally, the streamer’s statement. As part of that message, Beahm addressed departing Midnight Society, as well as the accusations against him, with the content creator claiming no criminal charges have been brought against him, at the time of the ban or in more recent years.

“From a moral standpoint I’ll absolutely take responsibility,” Beahm said. “I should have never entertained these conversations to begin with. That’s on me. That’s on me as an adult, a husband and a father. It should have never happened.”

INDUSTRY

GameStop’s struggles have continued into 2024 as the one-time retail giant attempts to adjust to current consumer habits. GameStop sales fell around 26% year-over-year to $882 million in Q1 2024, the company reported in mid-June. While net losses are down 36% to $32.3 million for the quarter, layoffs, ongoing concerns about a path to profitability for the business, and the wildcard of the meme stock booms and troughs GameStop has faced all make the future murky at best.

Larian Studios continues to reel in awards for the triumph that was Baldur’s Gate 3. The role-playing game received nods from the Nebula Awards for in-game writing as well as Game of the Year and Readers’ Choice honors at the Gayming Awards, and Best LGBTQ+ Character recognition for Baldur’s Gate 3 character Shadowheart from that program as well. It’s unlikely the accolades will stop any time soon, either, as the summer and fall bring us into awards season for the games industry.

Netflix VP of Games Mike Verdu is being repositioned by the company as the streaming service seeks a replacement and new approach to the games portion of its business. Verdu will be working on “game innovation” in his new role, according to a statement, though what that entails remains unanswered. For now, Verdu will remain as VP of Games while Netflix finds a replacement and continues to search for a way to turn into a destination for playing games, not just streaming traditional content.
