Thirty-eight percent of US internet households subscribe to at least one sports-specific streaming service, up from just 4% in 2019, according to Parks Associates. Not surprisingly, the NFL is the most popular sport, with 82% of sports viewers in US internet households regularly watching NFL content during the season. Streaming platforms now account for between one-quarter to one-third of the NFL’s total broadcast revenue. “Sports have become the backbone of live streaming adoption,” said Michael Goodman, Senior Contributing Analyst, Parks Associates. “The ability to deliver interactive, data-driven, and personalized experiences is changing how audiences connect with their favorite teams and leagues. Our research illustrates the huge potential for new monetization models as engagement deepens across connected screens.”

Amazon Ads shared a milestone at its annual unBoxed conference on Tuesday: Prime Video now has an average monthly ad-supported reach of more than 315 million viewers globally, up from 200 million in April 2024. “Reaching more than 315 million average monthly ad-supported viewers globally marks a transformative milestone for Prime Video,” said Jeremy Helfand, Vice President, Prime Video Advertising. “This expanded audience across 16 countries demonstrates our customer-obsessed approach to enhancing the viewing experience while delivering powerful opportunities for brands. We’re just beginning to unlock what’s possible when premium entertainment, engaged viewers, and innovative ad-tech converge with relevant and performant advertising at this unprecedented scale.”

DIRECTV Advertising has launched “DIRECTV Elect,” an AI-Powered digital platform designed to help political advertisers reach connected audiences by delivering AI-driven insights into voter sentiment and campaign issues. DirecTV Elect offers access to a monthly audience of more than 130 million viewers nationwide with inventory available across DirecTV and national cable networks. “AI is redefining how political campaigns discover and engage with voters, helping unlock deeper insights and more effective connections,” said Amy Leifer, Chief Advertising Sales Officer at DIRECTV Advertising. “When that intelligence is complemented by the reach and credibility of television, voters gain greater clarity and confidence in what they see, while campaigns can achieve stronger results.”

Disney’s blackout on YouTube TV is costing the company $30 million per week, estimate Morgan Stanley analylsts Benjamin Swinburne and Thomas Yeh. Their financial forecast for Disney’s fourth quarter included “layering in 14 days of impact from the ongoing YouTube TV blackout, which we estimate is a $60mm revenue headwind.” A carriage dispute forced Disney off YouTube TV on October 30.

Tomorrow Studios (“The Better Sister”), an ITV Studios partner, has acquired Don’t Let the Devil Ride: A Novel, by Ace Atkins. Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker (“Marvel’s Luke Cage”) is adapting the bestseller for television.

Netflix is bringing back “Luther” – and Idris Elba – for a film sequel to “Luther: The Fallen Sun.” Dermot Crowely and Ruth Wilson are also returning. The TV series originally ran on BBC One from 2010-19.

Production has commenced on season two of HBO drama “Dune: Prophecy.” Filming is taking place in Hungary, Jordan, and Spain.

FOX announced its Winter 2026 premiere dates, including new series “Best Medicine” (Tuesday, January 6 at 8p), “Memory of a Killer” (Wednesday, Monday, January 26 at 9p), and reality show “Fear Factor: House of Fear” on Wednesday, January 14 at 9p.

Season four of Peacock’s “The Traitors” premieres Thursday, January 8 at 9p. The reality show has also been renewed for a fifth season.

Hulu’s “Tell Me Lies” returns for its third season on Tuesday, January 13 with two episodes. The drama follows a couple who have rekindled their tumultuous romance.

Microsoft is now enforcing its requirement that all third-party publishers have free behavioral analytics tool Microsoft Clarity in order to be paid out for impressions and clicks from Microsoft Advertising. Microsoft Advertising Liaison Navah Hopkins posted the update on LinkedIn, warning, “Any Microsoft Advertising clicks that do not have Clarity will be filtered out and result in nonbillable impressions/clicks.”

AI startup TACHI AI has debuted its AI-powered editing platform for TV and film editors. The platform employs Smart Utility AI workflows, task-oriented artificial intelligence designed to support, not supplant, creative professionals. “Our mission is simple: automate the technical edit to elevate the creative story,” said Aden Bahadori, CEO and co-founder of TACHI AI. “Most of an editor’s time is consumed by laborious tasks like repeatedly reviewing footage, pulling selects, and assembling, which drains creative energy. EstrellaTV has secured multi-year exclusive broadcast TV rights to Combate Global and will also stream the live events on the EstrellaTV App and EstrellaTV FAST channel.
