Cynopsis 01/15/26: Netflix Back on Top in SVOD Market Share

   IN THE NEWS

In the fourth quarter, Netflix reclaimed its position as US SVOD market leader with a 20% share, according to JustWatch’s Q4 2025 US Market Share Report, and Prime Video slipped to second. While each service lost share year-over-year, Disney (14%) and Apple TV (9%) each gained 2 percentage points.

Amazon and New Heights have launched Kelce Clubhouse, a retail destination inspired by the hit Wondery podcast ‘New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce.’ Fans can watch podcast clips and shop exclusive merchandise, including special collaborations with licensing partners. “Kelce Clubhouse shows how Amazon partners with creators like Jason and Travis Kelce to build something truly groundbreaking,” said Matt Sandler, GM of Creator Services at Amazon. “We’re not just helping creators distribute and monetize content – we’re empowering them to expand their brands into multi-dimensional businesses across content, commerce, and experiences.”

Netflix is teaming with Pete Davidson for its first original video podcast. “The Pete Davidson Show” – shot mostly in the “SNL” alum’s garage – launches Friday, January 30, and will be exclusive to the streamer. “Netflix was the home of one of my first stand-up specials, so it felt right to bring the podcast there, too,” said Davidson. “It’s me and my friends talking about anything and everything. It’s going to be a great time.” The show is produced by Marc Lieberman, President of Above Average, part of Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video.

California Rep. Sam Liccardo has asked Paramount CEO David Ellison for answers about foreign investors involved in Paramount’s $108.4 billion hostile takeover bid for Warner Bros. Discovery. In a new letter sent to Ellison, Liccardo says, “Given the nature and reach of Warner’s news and other media companies, which hold the sensitive personal data of more than 100 million American citizens, I believe this acquisition raises serious national security, data-protection, and editorial-independence concerns that warrant full transparency and regulatory scrutiny.” Liccardo is calling for a review of the bid by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States.

Meanwhile, Warner Bros. Discovery objected to Paramount’s motion for expedited court proceedings related to WBD’s Netflix deal, arguing that any urgency is of Paramount’s own making. WBD noted that Paramount has launched a hostile tender offer with a self-imposed January 21 expiration date, despite having full discretion to extend it. WBD added that Paramount has acknowledged the offer is neither “best and final” nor capable of closing this year, underscoring that no genuine urgency exists.

HBO Max and A24 have a renewed the multi-year partnership that brings A24 films exclusively to HBO and HBO Max in the US during the Pay-1 window. As part of the agreement, HBO Max subscribers will also have access to a library of A24 films throughout the course of the deal. In the deal’s initial run in 2025, half of A24’s Pay-1 titles ranked among HBO Max’s top 10 movies within their first two weeks on the service. “A24 has been an incredible partner, bringing a slate of talented creative voices and an engaged audience base to the platform,” said Royce Battleman, Executive Vice President of Global Content Acquisitions. “Their bold storytelling perfectly complements the distinct programming offered on HBO Max.”

By integrating TransUnion’s TruAudience® Marketing Solutions dataset into Actable’s machine learning models, the partnership achieved a 10% improvement in model fit for AI-driven marketing predictions. And it’s all about the data, said Brian Silver, EVP of Global Marketing Solutions at TransUnion. “AI isn’t magic, its output is only as good as the information it’s given. Garbage in, garbage out still applies,” noted Silver. “These results prove that when you start with a strong data foundation, AI can deliver meaningful lift and real ROI.”
