IN THE NEWS
The E.W. Scripps Co. has completed cable and satellite carriage deals that cover about 75% of its subscriber households, reported Scripps President/CEO Adam Symson, and created new value for the company without station blackouts. “In resetting rates for the vast majority of our pay TV subscriber base this year, we reached agreements that reflect the mutual benefit of our relationship with these important distribution partners,” said Symson. “In addition, we successfully negotiated to receive new distribution fees for television stations carrying local and regional sports. As we continue to sign new rights agreements in local markets, we fully expect to partner with distributors and garner distribution fees for the carriage of live sports.”
Amid the Israeli/Hamas war, Elon Musk has been ordered to remove disinformation related to the conflict from X and “diligently enforce” the platform’s policies. “Following the terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas against Israel, we have indications that your platform is being used to disseminate illegal content and disinformation in the EU,” wrote European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton. “Let me remind you that the Digital Services Act sets very precise obligations regarding content moderation.” Replied Musk, “Our policy is that everything is open source and transparent, an approach that I know the EU supports. Please list the violations you allude to on X, so that that the public can see them. Merci beaucoup.”
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg received a similar letter from Breton about a “surge of illegal content and disinformation” on Meta platforms. “I urgently invite you to ensure that your systems are effective,” said Breton, adding, “Needless to say, I also expect you to be in contact with the relevant law enforcement authorities and Europol, and ensure that you respond promptly to any requests.”
“Star Trek: Prodigy,” pulled from Paramount+ in June, will live longer on Netflix. Season one of the animated kids’ series will be released on Netflix later this year, and season two will debut in 2024.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Marvel Studios’ “Daredevil: Born Again,” which paused production amid the writers’ strike, is moving in a new direction. Writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman have been released (though they remain executive producers), along with the show’s directors. While some episodes and elements of shows already shot will be kept, Marvel is looking for a new team to move the Disney+ project forward.
UK/US producer Lightbox is in production on a three-part docuseries co-financed by Channel 4 and Fifth Season examining the recent controversy around the shock rocker Marilyn Manson. “Marilyn: Behind the Mask” (w/t) charts the musician’s rise to fame, significance and role as a counterculture icon.
Corus Entertainment IP and production venture Waterside Studios has two new development deals. The Canadian studio is set to produce live-action television adaptations of Marcela Citterio’s The Girl who Didn’t Want to be a Princess and Uma Ghost for young adults globally.
Disney Entertainment Television is expanding its Directing Program into unscripted content. For the first time, the program will offer emerging directors guaranteed segment directing opportunities on some of ABC’s unscripted series, as well as shadowing, mentoring and professional development in the genre. From the finalists, CTDI and the Unscripted Programming team selected two directors. First assistant director Rachel Shimko was chosen to shadow Emmy®-nominated unscripted and daytime director Ken Fuchs (“The Bachelor,” “Family Feud” and “Shark Tank”) on the set of “Shark Tank,” and direct a segment of the upcoming season of “The Bachelor.” Long-time camera operator Kerry Clemens will shadow “Dancing with the Stars”’ lead director, double BAFTA-winning Phil Heyes, and direct a segment on ABC’s upcoming season of the show.
LEGAL BRIEF
Former “60 Minutes” producer Alexandra Poolos is suing CBS for gender discrimination. Poolos alleges she was fired in violation of civil rights laws, after an association producer she supervised accused her of bullying behavior. “Poolos is not aware of CBS firing male ’60 Minutes’ employees based on a single complaint from a subordinate about behavior that was not alleged to constitute unlawful discrimination or retaliation,” states the complaint. “In contrast with its harsh treatment of Poolos, CBS has declined to take any meaningful disciplinary action in response to serious allegations of misconduct against male employees.”
COMING UP
“The Garden: Commune or Cult” premieres Sunday, October 29 at 9p on Discovery Channel. The six-part series explores an infamous off-grid community founded as a cooperative, that causes newcomers to wonder if they joined a commune working towards a sustainable, off-grid way of life, or a mind-controlling cult.
Paramount+’s next “South Park” event premieres Friday, October 27 in the US and Canada. In “South Park: Joining the Panderverse,” Cartman’s deeply disturbing dreams portend the end of the life he knows and loves. The adults in South Park are also wrestling with their own life decisions as the advent of AI is turning their world upside down.
Season two of “Firebuds” premieres Wednesday, November 1 on Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney+. Season two guest stars on the animated series include Adam Pally, Ariel Winter, Bret McKenzie, Ernie Hudson and Disney Legend Lea Salonga, among others.
STREAMING
Among US adults who watch FAST channels, 40% increased their FAST viewing time over the past year, and for two-thirds of that group it came at the expense of other streaming and linear services, according to Aluma Insights. “While free TV streaming services are generally used as secondary or tertiary sources of content, they are putting a dent in the viewing of primary paid sources,” said Michael Greeson, founder and principal analyst at Aluma Insights. “Given how rapidly the retail prices of paid services are increasing, we expect not only that more viewers will turn to free streaming services for TV content, but they will spend more time watching them.”
Sabio, a provider of CTV platforms, announced the launch of SabioTV, a free, creator-first content streaming platform founded on the commitment to bring multicultural voices to the forefront of the CTV ecosystem. SabioTV will feature unique voices and untold stories while connecting creators and brands to underrepresented audiences.
Crunchyroll and GSN announced a new 24/7 FAST channel for anime. The channel has launched on LG Channels, The Roku Channel and Vizio WatchFree+, and drops on Amazon Freevee on October 17. “The Crunchyroll channel is a gateway to the world of anime where we will guide viewers to discover new worlds, new stories and new characters,” said Rahul Purini, President of Crunchyroll.
Among the most common items in US household budgets are subscription streaming services – Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, Disney+, Max and Apple TV+, according to a survey by Vivent. Topping the list of those most likely to be cut if budgets are pinched were Disney+, Apple TV+, Netflix, Hulu and Spotify.
