CYNOPSISDIGITAL
09.27.16 Good morning. It’s Tuesday September 27, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Click Fraud: Click fraud is a type of internet crime. It occurs in pay-per-click online advertising when a person, automated script, or computer program imitates a legitimate user of a web browser clicking an ad, in order to generate a charge.
Change and evolve: That’s how you survive in a mega-competitive marketplace. And it’s safe to say that the world of connected TV devices is exactly that. That’s why Roku has unveiled five new streaming products: two are entry-level (one of them selling for as low as $29.99) and three are updated versions of the existing puck-shaped Roku. The two lower-priced offerings, called the Express and Express+, offer 1080p streaming with a remote. The three higher-end items – Roku Premiere ($80), Premiere+ ($100), and Ultra ($130) – all come equipped with 4K streaming support. The two most expensive also support HDR (high-definition range) video. In a bit of a rebranding effort, Roku has stopped numbering its new models: no more Roku 1, 2, 3, or 4.
Last week, CNBC reported that Twitter was exploring the possibility of offering itself up for takeover. Two suitors, according to the report, were Google and Salesforce. Microsoft and Verizon have also expressed interest, according to TechCrunch. Now we can add one more company to the list: Disney. According to a report from Bloomberg, Disney is considering a possible bid, and has even hired a financial advisor to crunch the numbers. Twitter’s stock rose after Bloomberg’s report was published, closing at a nine-month-high…though oddly enough, Disney’s shares fell by 1.73 percent.

Twitter‘s annual Online Video Playbook report, which it provided exclusively to Adweek, unveiled some notable statistics. For one, Twitter sees 800 million visitors a month. The report posits that 64% of those users influence the purchases of friends and family, and that 82% are actively engaged with brands on Twitter. When it comes to video, 93% of viewing takes place on mobile devices. And videos on Twitter are six times more likely to be re-tweeted than photos. They’re also three times more likely to be re-tweeted than GIFs. For advertisers, the report also points out the video components that tend to get the most viewer attention. Among them are "prominent branding in the first 5 seconds." For instance, Twitter says that having a brand logo in a video can increase purchase intent by 9%.
AOL will be making major use of RYOT, the VR studio that AOL’s Huffington Post acquired last year. AOL’s newest moves come as part of a partnership with American Family Insurance and the WPP-owned media agency Mindshare. According to AOL, AFI will tap into RYOT and other AOL services and solutions to build: a dedicated branded content on the The Huffington Post; a branded 360-degree video series; 360-degree videos that will be enabled across AOL’s online ad formats; and AOL research around the development of metrics for 360-degree consumer and advertiser engagement. AOL says that AFI will be the first company to use its full suite of new solutions.
FOTV Media Networks Inc., an interrelated group of digital media companies that produces and distributes video, hologram, VR and 360-degree content, announced a new addition to one of its platforms. The Internet TV provider FilmOn.com has added the sports-oriented satellite and cable channel ONE World Sports. The move comes about a month after ONE World Sports dropped off of Dish and its Sling TV platform.

The ListenFirstTelevision Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating are the purest form of showing interest digitally, since they’re organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).
All Series (9/19/16 – 9/25/16)

The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.

Only one actor in a streaming series has ever won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. (Actually, he did it twice.) Who is it? (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and state.)
Our Last Trivia Question? How many shows have aired new episodes on Netflix after ending their runs on other networks? Answer: Six — Arrested Development (previously on Fox), Star Wars: The Clone Wars (previously on Cartoon Network), The Killing (previously on AMC), Trailer Park Boys (previously on the Canadian network Showcase), DreamWorks Dragons (previously on Cartoon Network) and Longmire (previously on A&E). Whoo. That was a tough one.

The big screen is about to be invaded by VR. Or at least, by the story and characters of a prominent VR short. Invasion!, the short virtual reality film from VR animation company Baobab Studios, is getting a feature film adaptation. Roth Kirschenbaum Films announced that it will collaborate with Baobab to bring the characters and story of Invasion! to the big screen. The short, which involves a bunny’s encounter with aliens, is narrated by Ethan Hawke. It initially premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April. Check out a preview here.
