08/18/16: Machinima shuffles inventory; Twitchcon unveils sponsor lineup; Kurt Melcher’s new game


It’s Thursday, August 18, 2016, and this is your weekly early morning eSports & Gaming brief.

Machinima is evolving its content strategy, announcing plans to overall some of its existing channels and launch new ones in a move “to better reach various audience segments within its universe of gamers and alpha fans.” Anchoring the lineup of tweaks will be the relaunch of Machinima Prime as Primr and the repositioning of Machinima ETC and Machinima’s Main channel. Primr will look to offer geek-centric, live action entertainment with three new shows: This Week In Geek on Mondays, sketch comedy show Dank/Fire on Wednesdays; and round table discussion series Spacebar on Fridays. The Machinima channel will see shows like BFFs, Sanity Not Included, and Inside Gaming on the company’s flagship channel. ETC will serve as Machinima’s Entertainment, Tech and Culture channel. Other platforms set to launch in the near future will be SpawnPoint – formerly Respawn  with a focus on game based entertainment: let’s plays, machinima and other scripted bits, while Machinima becomes the hub for the company’s coverage of competitive gaming and eSports, including the series Chasing The Cup, Realm and Training Camp.

“Machinima has always been synonymous with gaming and fandom, but those are very broad categories. Our channels have not previously defined what segments of gaming and fandom their programming focuses on,” said Jason Dimberg, Senior Vice President, Programming and Editor-In-Chief. “With this revamp, we are looking to increase the touchpoints we have with our audience across our social programming channels. The overall goal is to properly set viewer expectation with the brands/channels we support and then deliver on them.”


Allied eSports announced today the formation of its new European-venture, ELC Gaming, at gamescom, which will serve as the owner and operator of Big Betty, described as “the first of its kind mobile eSports arena that serves as both a competition venue and full-service content production unit.” The company will launch the eSports Legends Cup next year, offering players the chance to compete online and on the Big Betty stage. The ELC Europe Tour is slated to begin at Holstenhallen in Neumunster, Germany on Sept. 30 and will include events with Hearthstone, League of Legends and more. "Our goal with ELC Gaming is to bring the excitement of professional eSports competition to the everyday gamer’s backyard," said Jud Hannigan, Senior Vice President of Allied eSports. "Big Betty provides us with both the mobility and production assets to deliver a truly unique and elite eSports experience all across Europe."

The surge of the Call of Duty World League propelled eSports viewership for the title to pass 1 billion minutes consumed this year. With the rise in numbers, Activision is now projecting The Call of Duty World League Championships at Call of Duty XP (with a $2 million purse) to rank as the most viewed Call of Duty eSports event in history “by a wide margin,” according to the release.  Call of Duty World League, Presented by PlayStation 4 partners with Major League Gaming with fans able to watch Black Ops III action on MLG.TV and in-game through Live Event Viewer.

CS:Go Lounge is ending its run as an eSports betting platform, announcing via Facebook that “Today we are announcing that we are closing our virtual items betting functionality with immediate effect. Depositing virtual skins and items in order to place a bet is not possible anymore,” adding that “Lounge will continue as an e-Sports entertainment and information platform with new features to be released very soon.”

The International Gaming Institute is offering a course at UNLV that allows students to explore the eSports industry via presentations and business plans relevant to the casino industry designed to effectively design competitive events and improve eSports experience models. “eSports is the hottest topic in every board room on the Strip, particularly with respect to Millennials,” said Robert Rippee, director of the Hospitality Lab and eSports Lab. “What better place to begin the journey to understand its relevance and application to the casino and hospitality industry than right here at UNLV?”

Allied eSports announced a strategic investment partnership Esports Arena designed to build new Esports Arena locations throughout North America, with the first location to open in Oakland and expansion of Esports Arena’s broadcast capabilities in its Santa Ana location. The companies will also plan and coordinate future tournaments and leagues in each other’s venues. "While Esports Arena has taken pride in our ability to translate the energy of our events in the arena to our broadcasts, the chance to add an industry-leading studio in Santa Ana will enable us to offer much more dynamic broadcast options to the industry, with increased opportunities for content creation," said Paul Ward, CEO of Esports Arena.

MEC Global released results from its Consumer Pulse Study, revealing comparing the habits of eSports vs. Sports fans. Overall, traditional sports viewers are slightly older and more evenly split across males and females than eSports. That said, according to the data, both groups are price conscious and brand loyal.


EA Sports’ newest push for FIFA 17 (out on Sept. 27) will include the Ultimate Team Championship Series, a new competitive gaming tournament that dangles a $1.3 million prize pool. FUT Champions will allow fans to compete in daily knockout tournaments for in-game rewards and the chance to play in the Weekend League and move up the Monthly Leaderboard. "The popularity of Ultimate Team, combined with the global nature of the most popular sports franchise on the planet, makes FIFA 17 a very exciting title for a season of competitive gaming like the one we are announcing today," said Peter Moore, Chief Competition Officer, Electronic Arts. "From qualifying via FUT Champions to competing in the Ultimate Team Championship Series and FIFA Interactive World Cup, we want all players to experience the thrill of competition, and we have a great season ahead for all our fans."

Adobe Digital Insights revealed new research that projects national gaming console and PC sales will hit $25.3 billion in 2016, with online revenue growth in Q1 2016 swelling 42% over the same period a year ago. ADI also projected that open-beta testing for games served as an asset for gamers and developers alike, with widely tested titles selling 1.7x more units on the day prior to release compared with non-open beta games and selling 4.2x more units than non-open betas in the timeframe overall. “The takeaway for marketers, especially those in the software/technology industry, is that it might pay off to allow potential customers to test technology before it is released to the masses. That could even apply to an advertising campaign,” said Becky Tasker, managing analyst at ADI, per CMO.

Epic Games unveiled its free-to-play MOBA Paragon via free Open Beta for PC and PlayStation 4. Offering a 5v5 format, the publisher announced a livestream on Twitch and YouTube. According to the company, “In Paragon, every match is an epic clash of Heroes, each with their own unique design and play style that can turn the tide of battle. With a new Hero every three weeks, Paragon offers endless opportunity for new players and MOBA veterans alike.”

Activision is opening the doors for Destiny competition, allowing players to set up their own fames against other squads via Private PvP matches allowing up to 12 players to compete in Crucible matches. In addition, game developer Bungie released guidelines and licensing details for hosting Destiny eSports competitions.

Ubisoft announced that Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege is currently hitting its highest reach ever, boasting a nearly 40% increase in active players since the launch of its latest update, Skull Rain on Aug. 2. The company also announced that, with the Rainbow Six Pro League Season 2 just finished, more than 400,000 fans watched Denial eSports best Strictly Business in the Xbox One Pro League finals on July 30. Pro League Season 3 begins Aug. 29.

Mobile game publisher Firefly Games raised another $10 million via a second round of funding with the money designed to expand its efforts to make games based on Hollywood intellectual properties as well as expand into the eSports scene. Leading the round in the Los Angeles startup was China Construction Bank International Holdings.

Twitch as adding Curse to its spell book, acquiring the global multimedia and technology company focused on creating content and products specifically for gamers. “We’ve long been fans of Curse, which is an innovator in the games industry with a strong culture built around its offeringsfrom Curse Voice and Curse Client to Gamepedia," said Emmett Shear, CEO of Twitch. "While it’s still early days for Twitch and Curse, we’re kindred spirits in many ways and are looking forward to working together to enhance our users’ gaming experience."

Xbox confirmed its acquisition of Beam for Microsoft, picking up the interactive livestreaming service that gives viewers the ability to watch and play along with their favorite game streamers in real-time. Announcing the deal, Microsoft stated that bring the company into its portfolio “supports our ongoing commitment to make Xbox Live more social and fun,” before noting that “We at Xbox are excited about this convergence between playing and watching, and want to provide gamers with the freedom and choice to have great multiplayer experiences across all of Beam’s platforms. This acquisition will help gamers enjoy the games they want, with the people they want, and on the devices they want.”

TenCent’s newest stake is in DouyuTV, China’s take on Twitch, leading a financing round of $226 million, according to All China Tech. Phoenix Capital Asset Management, Shenzhen Capitol Group and National SME Development have also participated in the round.

Twitch unveiled the first round of confirmed exhibitors and sponsors for TwitchCon 2016, with the event set to feature T-Pain as a special guest performer at TwitchCon: The Party. Overall, more than 50 game publishers, developers, vendors, software and hardware manufacturers, and other members of the industry are locked in, including Xbox, Electronic Arts, Daybreak Games, Amazon Game Studios, Naughty Dog, Devolver Digital, Starbreeze Studios, tinyBuild Games, Trion Worlds, Vainglory, and more. Presenting sponsors will include Xbox, truth and Amazon Game Studio with Streamlabs set to joins Tiltify, Turtle Beach, Old Spice, and more as experience sponsors. Meanwhile, the HP Heroes of the Storm OPEN Challenge will see four teams of five gamers compete while trapped in gaming torture chambers for a chance to win the first HP OMEN Challenge Championship and a cash prize. The event takes place from Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at the San Diego Convention Center.

The Open Gaming Alliance is teaming with Unity Technologies to launch WISER (Women in Software and Entertainment Representation), a professional speakers bureau for women in games, entertainment, VR/AR and technology. Professionals who are part of the organization are interested in speaking on panels, emceeing, presenting at public events and teaching workshops in a move to normalize “their visibility and representation at events and on industry stages. The overall objective is to encourage and enable women to be on stage speaking about their specific area of expertise.”

Nordic Games is rebranding as THQ Nordic. Ubisoft announced the Nosulus Rift, described as a unique experience exclusively compatible with the South Park: The Fractured But Whole video game that adds the element of smell into VR. The devise will only be offered at events, rather than used for sale, and allows gamers to smell farts in the game. The mask was developed by Productman, a division of ad agency Buzzman.

The Lenovo IdeaCentre Y710 Cube desktop computer is set to include built-in support for Xbox Wireless peripherals, allowing owners to use Xbox One controllers to play PC games, among other capabilities. The system will integrate that adapter accessory into the chassis, although in the future, connectivity will become a component on motherboards offered by Microsoft’s partners.

Turtle Beach debuted its all-new Stealth 520 and Stealth 420X at gamescon for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One respectively. The company also unveiled its Stealth 350VR headset at the event as well as the upcoming Stream Mic, described as the first studio-quality, plug-n-play microphone specifically designed to let gamers livestream like a pro directly from their Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC and Mac.

Logitech pulled the curtains back on its Logitech G Pro Gaming Mouse, designed for eSports athletes and offering the company’s most accurate optical gaming sensor, a metal spring button tensioning system, onboard memory for driver-free operation on tournament systems, and a “comfortable, durable yet lightweight design.” “The benefit of working with eSports players is that they tell us what they like, and more importantly, what they don’t like,” said Ujesh Desai, vice president and general manager of gaming at Logitech. “Our new Logitech G Pro Gaming Mouse takes what eSports pros loved about the G100s and G303 and combines it into a mouse that we’re confident will meet their standards.”


Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment appointed Tero Virtala as its a new CEO. Interim CEO, co-founder and chairman Markus Maki will shift back to oversee studio production.


Intersport hired Kurt Melcher from Robert Morris University to oversee the company’s eSports development. Melcher  in addition to serving as Athletic Director for the school – launched the first collegiate-level eSports department in the US at Robert Morris. According to the company, his role as an evangelist for the industry will “be instrumental in architecting Intersport’s eSports approach.” Cynopsis spoke with Melcher about his move and his legacy for eSports at the university level.
Melcher on moving to Intersport: I grew up in Chicago and you know Intersport through their work with collegiate athletics, etc. When they approached me about eSports, I really liked their vision for the future of the industry. They believe in the future of eSports as a viable, real athletic competition. I’ve always respected the way that Intersport manages brands, and as eSports continue to become more mainstream, I wanted to be a part of their commitment to position us to be on the cutting edge of that.

On Intersport’s plans in the eSports space: As we see eSports impact pop culture  whether it is through ELeague or League of Legends  brands are becoming increasingly interested in the space and they want to know what it looks like, what it is made out of and how it works. We want to be able to educate them about the industry and how to activate in an authentic, real manner. In addition, with my expertise coming from collegiate athletics, I see real possibilities and opportunities there as well and they need the help.

On stereotypes and authenticity: There is a stereotype out there about eSports players that they are eating three bags of Cheetos and drinking energy drinks, but on the competitive side, people take it very seriously and it aligns much better with athletics. When eSports and videogames are taken at a competitive, serious level, e-athletes train seriously and are actually living healthier lifestyles for a mind-body connection. As eSports develops and science comes out of this, we’ll see the whole thing align closer to how marketers use athletics than anything else.

On collegiate eSports: I think that collegiate eSports are really overlooked by the universities where they have these vibrant communities on campus, sometimes as many as 2000 students in clubs and organizations that have self-governance. They really aren’t given any support by the universities. So I think that identifying those groups and finding ways to helps structure those groups, whether it is through tournaments or leagues, will just help that scene take off.
