CYNOPSISeSPORTS & GAMING
06.16.16 It’s Thursday, June 16, 2016, and this is your weekly early morning eSports & Gaming brief.
The console wars at E3 saw Xbox snag headlines with two new console announcements as well as a redefining new way to play games in the new Xbox Play Anywhere program, which allows gamers buy a game once and play it on both their Windows 10 PC and Xbox One console with shared progress, game saves and achievements. “Gamers have never had more choice in how and where they play,” said Spencer. “We are bringing our biggest games lineup ever to Xbox One and Windows 10, uniting gamers across networks on Xbox Live and expanding the Xbox One family of devices with the addition of Xbox One S and Project Scorpio to give gamers more choice in how and where they play. There’s never been a better time to be an Xbox gamer.” Games are already set to include Ark: Survival Evolved, Forza Horizon 3, Gears of War 4, Halo Wars 2, Killer Instinct: Season 3 and ReCore.
“The trick for Microsoft will be that the games have to be truly cross compatible and that they gameplay, stability and other important factors are seamless from platform to platform,” said Eli Weisman, VP, Interactive TV & Content at Trailer Park. “Games will have to be built from the ground up with this cross compatibility in mind unless Microsoft gets very strict with their approach to porting existing games to the PC.”
The anticipated unveiling of new Xbox One hardware included Project Scorpio, launching in 2017 in time for the holidays, and “will be the most powerful console ever created, with 6 teraflops of GPU delivering a premier console gaming experience including true 4K gaming and high fidelity virtual reality.” The Xbox One S, meanwhile, will offer a sleek new design and “robot white” color, for a 40 percent smaller console that has an internal power supply and supports 4K Ultra HD for Blu-ray movies and content streamed from partners like Netflix and Amazon Video.
Electronic Arts launched a new eSports infrastructure and weekly competitions, offering new competitive modes, weekly online contests, and new ways to compete via Challenger events, Premier events, and EA Major events. Challenger events allow gamers to host and oversee their own tournaments. EA’s Premier series will involve outside partners and leagues for large-scale live events, while the EA Major events will be run by EA on a “global stage,” with “the best players competing for the biggest prizes,” starting with the Madden NFL ’16 championship that ran on ESPN2.
ESL locked in a deal with SPORT1 to bring eSports to German free-TV. As part of the partnership, ESL One Frankfurt, Europe’s largest Dota 2 festival, will be carried on SPORT1 with live streams available on SPORT1.de and regular updates available through the official SPORTS1 esports app. Last year’s event saw over 30,000 people live in the Commerzbank-Arena over the weekend. SPORT1 will also offer a free mobile app with news and data from the world of eSports, entitled The SPORT1 eSports app and a dedicated online store with selected eSports merchandise.
Week 3 of ELeague saw the eSports brand drive up its tally to nearly 350 million gross minutes of video consumption across Twitch and TBS. The move off of syndicated shows toward eSports has now seen the network shift its audience composition for a 71% boost in Men 18-34 and a rise of 46% among Men 18-49 in the window versus the previous month. In fact, the network’s median age has now dropped to 40 during telecasts, down seven years from its typical primetime delivery in the daypart.
Microsoft’s announcement of Arena on Xbox Live will offer new online tournaments platform designed for players “from novice to aspiring pro” who can sign up for tournaments directly through the Xbox UI or the Xbox app and play for prizes and bragging rights. The company is partnering with eSports organizers such as FACEIT, ESL, MLG and more and working with developers to bring games such as Killer Instinct, Gears of War 4, Halo Wars 2, World of Tanks, Smite and H1Z1: King of the Kill to the platform.
E3 also saw Bethesda unveil Quake Champions, updating the famed title for competition with features that include a roster of unique characters. Following its launch, the title will be supported at eSports tournaments around the world, including QuakeCon. “20 years ago, Quake set new standards for multiplayer competition and pushed the boundaries for graphics and gameplay,” said Tim Willits, Studio Director, id Software. “It’s important to all of us at id Software that Quake Champions remains true to the Quake legacy, and delivers the speed and gameplay our longtime fans expect, while also pressing forward by introducing new gameplay opportunities with new Champions and abilities.”
More than 800 million hours of eSports content were viewed on Twitch in the past 10 months, according Newzoo. Overall, 231 million hours were rebroadcast content with over 71% of that content coming from tournament organizers, with League of Legends developer Riot Games and third-party organizer ESL accounting for a majority of that number.

The main event will take place this August 2021 at gamescom, Europe’s largest trade fair for interactive games and entertainment. The first of four open qualifiers for the tournament will begin on June 27.
The Russian government recognized eSports as a sport, with benefits of the acknowledgment kicking in on June 17. The move now allows for the country’s gaming community to seek sponsorship from the Sports Ministry and receive official recognition for their achievements.
Mindshare North America showcased new research on eSports and its implications/recommendations for marketers. The study found that 65% of fans are millennials (between the ages of 18-34) with 38% of eSports fans are women while 60% of fans are between the ages of 25-39. So, how can brands connect?

EA CEO Andrew Wilson detailed a new program called Play to Give, blending in-game achievements and charitable donations. Charities currently involved include the He For She Initiative, National Centre for Women & Information Technology, Special Effect, Code.org, and Code 2040. Games will include community-based goals in games such as Battlefield 4, Hardline Star Wars and Star Wars Galaxy. EA is donating 1 million dollars towards these charities.

After launching a new line of eSports lifestyle apparel at E3 this week, with its Kills collection, Ultimate Media Ventures continues to expand its wings in the eSports lifestyle space. The “gaming and eSports innovation company” now offers services that range strategic consulting and content production in addition to its work in lifestyle products and event experiences in addition to venture-backed initiatives in VR and experiential design. Cynopsis spoke with Nate Eckman, cofounder of UMV and lead designer for ULT, about the move and the changing needs of its clientele.
Eckman on E3: The extreme lack of eSports at E3 is the biggest take away from E3! Note that I would not consider traditional sport games among relevant eSports titles. did run into the C9 Overwatch team outside, the ones who took the 10k prize at eSports arena against Liquid. I asked them what they were doing here. It clearly wasn’t to be a part of the massive vendor villages that have popped up outside the show. Otherwise, to me the Vreal platform is really exciting with the potential for streaming eSports games in VR as shared spectating experiences. The new Razer VR open source platform agnostic hardware is exciting. Also, leading into E3 was the MLG COD event in Anaheim which was the beginning of Facebook Live and eSports content which is monumental. For me the week before E3 – like Manny Anekal would say – is the real E3.
On launching the line: We wanted to make a bold statement about eSports lifestyle in Los Angeles and E3 was a moment of cultural tension to voice that message. It’s interesting how loud and clear ULT eSports lifestyle apparel is through the sea of announcements of the next iteration of AAA releases. Our LA Times interview touches on that sentiment. There is a void in our contemporary culture when it comes to eSports lifestyle in the gaming industry. ULT apparel exists to speak to that need in a specific way.
On the company’s Ult Labs: Right now Ult Labs is hyper focused on content, product and experiences. Fragd is next up to really demonstrate what we mean by eSports lifestyle content. We are putting a lot of resources in that. We are also deep in the design phase for the ULT brand technical wearables for players and leagues. These investments are important because they impact the eSports ecosystem by innovating value and enhancing the community through better products and more compelling content. As for experiences, we will talk about our next play very soon.
On speedbumps for companies getting into eSports events: Production comes with massive liability and upfront cost without much margin. The incredible amount of planning is even more of a time investment that is huge. If the event is amazing and a success then it is well worth it, like our production teams in involvement with the major leagues live events. Beyond that, production is a laborious space with not a lot of room to scale. Just don’t disappoint the community. That is by far the biggest hurdle.
Nintendo drew raves for its trailer for the upcoming "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild," which offers open world play for the famed franchise. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is scheduled to launch simultaneously for both the Wii U console and Nintendo’s next system, code-named NX, in 2017 and, of course, includes compatibility with amiibo. Click here for the trailer.
ON THIS DAY in 2009: Ghostbusters: The Video Game is released worldwide.
Trivia: What is the name of the world where the League of Legends is located? (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company and city.)
Answer to Our Last Sports Trivia Question: In what classic game does Jumpman need to save Pauline from her beastly captor? Answer: Donkey Kong. Kudos: Danny Araque/NYC; Glen Ross/DC; Carly Dasso-Saatchi & Saatchi/Oakbrook Terrace; Andy Pittman-TAMU/College Station; Tom Moore-Kalt Productions/LA.
