Cynopsis

10/10/07

Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, October 10, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

NBC Universal is adding the seven-year old, female-oriented Oxygen Media to its stable of cable entertainment networks. NBC U is purchasing Oxygen, which is available in more than 74 million homes, for $925 million (that’s net of financial assets – the actual purchase price is approximately $875 million). This transaction is part of NBC U’s focused strategy to acquire media properties with quick growth potential and increase the number of brands targeting upscale women. Oxygen launched in 2000 and was founded by present Chairman/CEO Geraldine Laybourne, Oprah Winfrey and television producers Marcy Carsey, Tom Werner and Caryn Mandabach. NBC U is funding the purchase price of Oxygen by selling its two independent Telemundo TV stations: KWHY/Los Angeles and WKAQ/Puerto Rico. The deal is expected to close in November, following normal regulatory approvals.

Tonight’s Premieres:

MTV: Pageant Place at 1030p

In response to negative feedback from its clients, Nielsen Media Research is establishing a new revised rule, following the introduction this season of the rule that allowed a network to air a program twice, and get one rating.  Effective immediately, Nielsen will report separate ratings for both the original broadcast and the repeat. While NBC was the only network to work the new rule with its premiere and repeat broadcast of Heroes, but Nielsen got an earful from concerned clients who want separate program ratings for originals and repeats. Nielsen will continue to seek new reporting options which will give its clients flexibility in how ratings are produced.

The CW is the first to announce a pick-up of a freshman series as Gossip Girl will return next year with a full season of episodes. In its Wednesday 9p time slot, Gossip Girl has posted season to date averages of 2.8/7 among W18-34 and 1.9/5 with A18-34 and 4.7/15 with female teens as well as 3 million total viewers.

When production takes its mid-winter break on the Fox series 24 beginning December 21st, Keifer Sutherland will spend his off-time in jail.  The actor pleaded no contest to drunk driving charges and will spend 30 days in jail for that charge, and an additional 18 days for violating his probation stemming from a 2004 drunk driving charge.  The judge also specifically said Sutherland cannot be released early nor will electronic home monitoring be an option.  Sutherland must serve every day of his 48-day sentence in jail.

Ultra HD, part of the VOOM HD Networks, tapped Australian chef Luke Mangan to star in a new original series Appetizing Adventures with Luke Mangan starting November 7. The eight episode series will showcase Luke’s road trip through Asia as he finds inspiration for his restaurant in Sydney. The series is produced in Hi-def in collaboration with Singapore’s Mega Media and the Media Development Authority of Singapore.

Sundance Channel is going “down under” – purchasing the eight-episode, half-hour Australian series Big Girl’s Blouse. The sketch series, featuring the early work of comediennes Jane Turner, Gina Riley and Magda Szubanski of the Kath and Kim series, will make its U.S. television premiere next year. The series originally aired on Australia’s 7 Network in 1994.

Bravo returns to Orange County, CA as the third season of the docu-drama The Real Housewives of Orange County debuts November 6 at 10p. The original housewives from season one and two are back and joined this season by new housewife, Tamra Barney.

Broadcast Evening News Ratings Wrap-Up: ABC’s World News with Charles Gibson pulled ahead of NBC’s Nightly News with Brian Williams in the last week with both total viewers and ratings among A25-54 viewers. Here are the finals for the week of October 1, 2007:
ABC: 7.57 million total viewers  1.9/8 A25-54
NBC: 7.46 million total viewers  1.7/7 A25-54
CBS: 5.67 million total viewers  1.4/6 A25-54

Style Network has a new weekly series Ultimate Style hosted by Daisy Fuentes and Jai Rodriguez which opens November 3 at 11p. The 30m show will take a look at what’s happening around the world in fashion, beauty, home, travel, celebrity style and more.

VH1 will give rocker Bret Michaels another chance to find his love match as a second season of Rock of Love with Bret Michaels will premiere early next year. During the reunion show that aired last Sunday night, the 3.9 million total viewers found out his choice, Jes, decided she could not handle his rock n’ roll lifestyle. Next season, twenty new ladies will vie for Bret’s attention and heart. The series is produced by Mindless Entertainment and 51 Pictures.

MTV has renewed Life of Ryan for a second season which features skateboarder and heartthrob Ryan Sheckler. Production on the new season starts this fall and new episodes will appear first quarter 2008. The season one finale will air October 15 at 1030p.

Fox Soccer Channel and the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) signed a two-year broadcasting deal to televise league games starting next month through the 2008-09 season, which represents the most complete national television coverage in MISL’s seven-year history. The agreement includes twenty regular matches starting November 16 at 8p with live coverage of the Baltimore Blast hosting the La Raza de Monterrey. Most scheduled games will air live on Fridays from 8-10p.

ReelzChannel added a new original program Movie Up which starts October 18 at 630p with an encore airing at 930p. The half-hour weekly series is hosted by comedienne and actress Tory Schulman and will give viewers a humorous take on newly released films and on the various forms of distribution.

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Do you remember the sitcom from a few years ago called The Pitts on Fox?  It aired all of four time before it was cancelled in 2003.  Well, it’s making a comeback, only in cartoon form.  The network has ordered up an animated version from its creators Mike Scully and Julie Thacker-Scully for next season.  Thus far, the network has asked for two scripts.

Fox has two other animated series in development for next season – Relative Insanity from exec producer Jack Black and about a guy’s nutty family; and Mothballs from Matt Silverstein and Dave Jeser about a family that lives in and operates a nursing home.  These two, plus the Pitts above, are all from Twentieth Century Fox TV.

FX has ordered up a pilot for a drama project called Forever Sam Crow, about a young man involved in a motorcycle club, and trying to balance that with becoming a new father.  The project is from Kurt Sutter, who is also exec producer of FX’s The Shield.

ABC has a comedy project in the works called The 16th Minute from Greg Malins and Twentieth Century Fox TV.  This comedy about a group of friends, picks up immediately after a person’s so-called 15 minutes of fame.

HBO has signed an exclusive development deal with Charles S. Dutton, who will direct and act in projects he brings to the network.  The deal encompasses series, movies and miniseries.

Casting Call: Lifetime’s new show It’s My Party is looking for over-the-top, extravagant party givers in the Las Vegas and Orange County areas. The show has enlisted a professional party planner and caterer which will help with all the splashy extras. If you’re planning a party between now and January 6, 2008 and have set the budget, the casting director wants to talk with you. The party can be any theme; the more upscale the better. For more information and to apply for the show, email
or call at 310-601-3202.

CorrectionAtlas Media Corp. signed a book deal with Crown Publishing Group and will develop a book by Dr. Jan Garavaglia called How Not to Die: Surprising Lessons on Living Longer, Safer and Healthier from America’s Favorite Medical Examiner. Yesterdays’s item erroneously indicated it would be a second TV series.
