Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 4, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

Nickelodeon teams again with Columbia/Epic Label Group, a division of Sony Music Entertainment, for the new live-action, comedy series Big Time Rush (20×30).  The network will air a 1-hour preview of the new series on Saturday, November 28 at 8:30p, following a new episodes of iCarly at 8p.  From creator Scott Fellows (Ned’s DeClassified School Survival Guide), Big Time Rush follows four close friends that head to LA for a chance at pop music stardom.  Slated to premiere in early 2010, Big Time Rush is Nickelodeon’s second TV partnership with Columbia/Epic Label Group, the first being Dan Schneider’s upcoming Victorious (2010).  Big Time Rush will feature original songs performed by the group in the series, as guided by Columbia/Epic Label Group, with music by songwriters and producers, including Desmond Child (Katy Perry, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith), Matthew Gerrard (Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne), Charlie Midnight (Hilary Duff, Britney Spears), Kevin Rudolph (Let It Rock) and Eman (David Archuletta).

Pulitzer Prize winning writer David Lindsay-Abaire will pen the script for DreamWorks Animation SKG‘s movie The Guardians (working title), an adaptation of author William Joyce’s upcoming kid’s books The Guardians of Childhood.  Director Peter Ramsey (Monsters vs. Aliens: Mutant Pumpkins from Outer Space) will direct The Guardians.  DreamWorks Animation acquired the property from Reel FX where the characters and the world of The Guardians of Childhood were developed in a partnership with Joyce. Joyce will also serve as co-director.  DreamWorks Animation is scheduled The Guardians for release on November 2, 2012.  Publication of The Guardians of Childhood books will begin in 2011, with subsequent books slated to publish in yearly installments thereafter.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Director/Producer Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum movies, Cheaper by the Dozen, Big Fat Liar) signs on to produce Walden Media‘s mixed live-action/CG animated movie based on the kid books The Berenstain Bears, per USA Today.  Walden Media CEO Michael Bostick says the move could release as early as late 2011.  Created by author/illustrators Jan and Stan Berenstain, The Berenstain Bears first appeared in the 1962 book The Big Honey Hunt, a Dr. Seuss’ Beginner Books title.  There are no writers signed to pen the movie as of yet. The Berenstain Bears have been featured in 300+ books, three animated TV series and a range of animated holiday specials as well as video games.

Owen Wilson will lend his voice to Great Dane Marmaduke in Fox‘s mixed live-action and CG animated feature film adaptation of the Marmaduke comic strip, per THR.  Slated for release in June 2010, the family targeted movie features a script by Tim Rasmussen and Vince Di Meglio and will be directed by Tom Dey.  Marmaduke will also feature Judy Greer, Lee Pace and William H. Macy as two of the adult (real people), with Fergie, Emma Stone, George Lopez, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Steve Coogan, Damon Wayans, and Marlon Wayans also lending their voices to characters in the movie.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Toei Animation completes broadcast licensing deals and a DVD agreement in Latin America for several of its properties.  Buena Vista (Argentina) acquires 48×30 episodes of Digimon Data Squad, which will begin airing the series in December 2009/January 2010.  Medcom (Panama) picks up 114×30 episodes of Saint Seiya and 153×30 episodes of Dragon Ball, both of which have already begun airing.  Additionally, in Brazil, Playarte will release a DVD box set featuring 28-episodes of Dragon Ball this December.

MARKETING/LICENSING

With Summit Entertainment‘s The Twilight Saga: New Moon set to open November 20, it’s Twilight Saga-mania all over the place.  Toys “R” Us which is offering dedicated Twilight Saga merchandise in dedicated shops in its stores nationwide and online ( www.toysrus.com/NewMoon ), where it is also featuring a countdown clock to 12:01a on opening.  The toy retailer is also offering a New Moon sweepstakes now through November 25.  Additionally, Toys “R” Us Times Square store will feature a Twilight event on November 19, the eve of New Moon’s release, where guests can shop all things Twilight, including a special apparel selection from Hot Topic, and take part in various Twilight-centric activities and see props from the movie set.  To help excite fans, and more importantly drive sales, beginning Saturday, November 7 at 7a, the first 500 guests (there are only 500 tix available  first come first serve) who purchase $50 worth of Twilight Saga products at Toys “R” Us Times Square will be able to receive a ticket to a VIP autograph signing, scheduled to feature Nikki Reed (Rosalie) and Kellan Lutz (Emmett), which will take place at the stores at 4p on November 19. THEN … beginning Saturday, November 14, the first 325 guests who purchase $65 worth of Twilight Saga products at the NYC store will receive one ticket valid for entry for two people to attend an exclusive advance screening of New Moon on November 19.  OK, so there are rules for these events … like … you can’t use receipts for prior purchases  you gotta buy on those specific dates in the Times Square store, no phone orders.  Let’s just say that fangs might just come in handy here!

STONE SOUP

The Toy Industry Foundation (TIF) launches a month-long virtual Do Good Stuff-a-Thon to support the multi-year commitment to the My Stuff Bags Foundation and kids in need.  With financial support and donation of kid-targeted products via The Toy Bank, TIF helps My Stuff Bags provide necessities (e.g. blankets, clothing, toiletries, toys) in duffel bags to foster kids nationwide.  A range of toy companies have already supported or pledged support for this effort.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Home Entertainment veteran Kelley Avery is tapped to serve as DreamWorks Animation SKG‘s newly created position of Worldwide Head of Franchise Strategy and Distribution.  Primarily, Avery will be responsible for the development of the studio’s global franchise plan, including new product and business initiatives, distribution of content on physical and digital platforms, as well as overseeing its existing home entertainment business.  The move marks Avery’s return to DreamWorks, where she previously headed the Home Entertainment division.  Most recently, Avery was President/Worldwide Home Entertainment, Paramount.

GameStop Corp. names Shawn D. Freeman as SVP and GM/Digital Business.  Based at the GameStop’s corporate home in Texas, Freeman will oversee and cultivate the company’s digital business strategy.  Most recently, Freeman was President of Ticketsnow.com and SVP of resale for Ticketmaster North America.
