Mark Greenberg, former Showtime veteran, may be tapped as CEO to lead the new premium TV channel start-up from Viacom, Paramount Pictures, Lionsgate and MGM, reports Business Week. The new channel, which remains unnamed, is set to launch in 2009. Mark left Showtime after 17 years in 2006 to pursue other career interests.

Keeping up with Henry and his wives, Showtime renewed The Tudors for a third season. Production starts up again June 16 in Dublin with Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the lead as Henry VIII. No word as of yet on how many new episodes will be included in this third run.

Larry King will continue with CNN at least until 2011 according to his new contract extension with the network. The deal calls for no major changes and Larry will be at the helm of his Larry King Live show, which averages 1 million viewers per night, M-F at 9p.

BBC America has picked up two seasons of the recent BAFTA winner, Gavin & Stacey. The 30m romantic comedy will make its U.S. premiere this August with 13 total episodes over two seasons. The series is produced by Baby Cow Production and is distributed by BBC Worldwide. Much like The Office, NBC is considering making an American version of this series sometime in the future.

Broadcast Evening News Ratings Wrap-Up: The final results for the week of April 14, 2008:
NBC: 8.17 million total viewers and 1.9/8 A25-54
ABC: 7.51 million total viewers and 1.8/8 A25-54
CBS: 5.39 million total viewers and 1.4/6 A25-54

Animal Planet’s new season of Meerkat Manor: The Next Generation begins June 6 at 9p. Before the series debut, Animal Planet will air the documentary film Meerkat Manor: The Story Begins on May 25 at 8p which is after its theatrical premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. The documentary centers on “Flower” the meerkat matriarch who was featured prominently in the network’s TV series.

Kimora: Life in the Fab Lane which opened its second season this past Sunday (8p) on the Style Network, averaged a .63 rating among W18-49.

Azteca America will debut Juez Franco (Judge Franco), the spin-off of La Corte del Pueblo, next Monday as a strip series airing weeknights at 6p. In each 30m episode, Juez Franco will serve up no-nonsense judgments to those seeking justice. The show is shot in front of a live audience in Los Angeles and is produced by Proenza de la Paz Entertainment.

Independent producer and distributor, Entertainment Studios, which specializes in first-run syndication content, is partnering on a global scale with MySpace to provide content for ten branded original channels that will be found at MySpaceTV.com. The ten channels will be updated weekly and will span MySpaces’ 29 territories. Examples of the programming include Beautiful Homes & Great Estates, Urban Style and The American Athlete.

After having a non-existent year due to the WGA strike, the Golden Globes, presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, will air the 66th annual awards show on January 11, 2009, with nominations scheduled to be announced on December 11, 2008.

For the first time an Emmy for Outstanding Host For A Reality or Reality-Competition Program will be handed out at the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards live on September 21. The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Board of Governors voted recently to include this new category to honor hosts of reality or reality-competition programs.

Correction: In recent licensing deals, Spike TV acquired the first three Rambo films from CBS Distribution; the recent theatrical release of Rambo 4 from Lionsgate; and other action films from Lionsgate including Replicant, Kickboxer, Ticker and National Lampoon’s Van Wilder.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Production for season two of AMC’s original series Mad Men started this week in Los Angeles. Thirteen new episodes of the award-winning series begins this July airing in both standard and hi-def versions. The series is produced by Lionsgate which will also release the first season of Mad Men on DVD July 1.

Writer/producer Danielle Sanchez-Witzel made a two-year overall deal with Universal Media Studios. UMS will allow Danielle to continue working on NBC’s sitcom My Name Is Earl which is produced by 20th Century Fox TV and where she was promoted to Co-Executive Producer starting this fall. Danielle will develop new programming for UMS during the two-year period.

Casting Call: WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) is asking Brazilian/Latina ladies to apply for the next Diva search. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORYqubo has created a set of nutritional guidelines designed to “dictate advertising decisions” (on-air and online) for the qubo channel and its like-named programming blocks on NBC, Ion Television and Telemundo.  This effort builds off of Ion Media Network’s advertising and media initiative to fight childhood obesity unveiled last summer for both qubo and Ion Life.  Developed with an expert in childhood obesity, qubo will now only accept ads from those company’s that meet the acceptable nutritional intake criteria set out in its new guidelines, which includes limits for meals and snacks broken down by calories, grams of fat, as well as saturated and trans fat, sugar, protein, fiber and sodium.  Last week qubo introduced a new series of kid-aimed healthy eating and exercise Public Service Announcements with partners US Dept. of Health & Human Resources, the Ad Council and the US Olympic Committee. CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORYSpanish-based Promotora de Informaciones SA’s Grupo Media Capital in Portugal sold its RETI analog TV channel for an undisclosed amount to Portugal Telecom (PT).  PT already owns three other analog channels (RTP1, RTP 2 and SIC).  Today is the last day to bid for a 15-year digital terrestrial TV platform license and rumor has it that PT will place a 40-channel platform bid which will now include the four free-to-air channels.  Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL

Monday – A18-49 Analysis:  CBS bested the competition Monday night with 4.0/10 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. ABC’s Dancing with the Stars cha-cha’d to first place with 4.0/11 during 8p. CBS with comedies Two and a Half Men and Rules of Engagement averaged a 4.5/11 to win at 9p. CBS carried the momentum through 10p as CSI: Miami won at 4.3/11.
