Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 6, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
The new animated series Wolverine and the X-Men (26×30) premieres on Nicktoons Network with back-to-back episodes on Friday, January 23, 8-9p. Produced by Marvel Animation, Wolverine and the X-Men will air regularly Fridays at 8p. The network also launches the new tie-in website, www.areyouamutant.com, on Tuesday, January 20, where fans can check their DNA for mutant genes, which will let them into the Xavier Institute for Gifted youngsters where they can visit various rooms, watch replays of the series, and interact (polls, message boards) and link to Nick.com for the new game of the week, Wolverine and the X-Men: Sentinel Slash. Additionally, content from the series will be available on TurboNick and via Nickelodeon’s wireless platforms. The series will also have a dedicated category in Nick’s VOD offering from January 19.
Nickelodeon is set to premiere the new animated preschool series Olivia on Monday, January 26 at 11:30, which will be followed by a week of new episodes. Olivia will air regularly weekdays at 11:30a. Presented in conjunction with Chorion and animated by Brown Bag Films, Olivia is based on Ian Falconer’s Olivia picture books. The network is supporting the series launch by offering content from January 16 on Nick Jr. Video and Nickelodeon Mobile, with episodes available from January 27 via Nickelodeon on Demand. The series will also premiere this year in the UK on Five’s Milkshake!
Producers Frank Marshall, Kathleen Kennedy and Pixar’s John Lasseter are working to guarantee a huge success for the release of director and Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki‘s new animated movie, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, set for this summer, per Variety. Their aim is to increase the number of movie screens where Ponyo will open here, and thus the box office receipts, from Ghibli’s previous US record for its movie Spirited Away (September 2002 – September 2003). Domestically, Spirited Away earned $10.1 million on 714 screens according to Box Office Mojo. The US voiceover cast for Ponyo will feature matt Damon, Tina Fey, Cate Blanchett, Liam Neeson, Lily Tomlin and Cloris Leachman. Ponyo was Japan’s biggest movie of 2008, grossing $165 million.
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release the new DVD Strawberry Shortcake: Happily Ever After at retail on February 3, 2009. In addition to the two Strawberry Shortcake stories, the DVD includes free Valentine’s Day cards as well as downloadable coloring pages and a memory game.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Hit Entertainment appoints Mattel’s Fisher-Price as the global master toy licensee for Thomas & Friends. Under the multi-year deal, Fisher-Price is granted the global rights for Thomas & Friends (excluding Japan), for categories including vehicles, figures and playsets (die casts and Trackmaster train system), preschool toys, plush, games, puzzles, role play among several others. The first line of products will be available in 2010 and will expand as existing licensees’ rights expire across key toy categories. The Thomas & Friends wooden track system rights remain with RC2.
Tomy Europe continues as a Thomas licensee, releasing new Thomas Preschool and Trackmaster products in 2009 and 2010, but Tomy’s will not be renewed in 2011, per Toy News Magazine.
iToys Inc., launches Kenken, the new Japanese brain-teaser handheld electronic game, in the US this month. Created by puzzle king and teacher Tetsuya Miyamoto as a teaching tool for people 8+, Kenken is math-based puzzle game features thousands of puzzles on 3×3 to 6×6 grids (so like sudoku) and also includes a touch screen, stylus, sound effects, backlight and so on. Kenken translates as wisdom or cleverness squared.
Electronic Arts plans to launch Littlest Pet Shop Spring for Nintendo DS in March 2009. Targeted to Girls 6-10, the game features a spring environment and six new exclusive pets and 20 new accessories. The games are based on Hasbro‘s Littlest Pet Shop toy line. The game is rated E for Everyone.

Diego Marchioni is appointed CEO, Kidrobot. Marchioni will work in tandem with Kidrobot founder and President, Paul Budnitz, to set the strategic course for the brand’s continued growth. Marchioni will also work to expand the Kidrobot apparel and toy lines into other product categories, including partnering with Wildbrain, Kidrobot’s majority investor, on multimedia and entertainment efforts. Most recently, Marchioni was COO, Wildbrain, and CFO, Wildbrain and Kidrobot, Inc.
