Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 31, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Cartoon Network will debut the new Fantastic Four (26 x 30 min) animated series this Saturday, September 2, at 8p as part of the Toonami programming block. Fantastic Four is an action/adventure series featuring Marvel Comics’ superheroes, Mr. Fantastic (aka Reed Richards), The Invisible Woman (aka Sue Richards), The Human Torch (aka Johnny Storm) and The Thing (aka Ben Grimm) as well as the evil-doer Doctor Doom. The Fantastic Four characters were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, and designed and realized by noted comic book artist Alex Toth, and the new Fantastic Four is produced by France’s Moonscoop (f/k/a Antefilms). The original animated series, The Fantastic Four was produced by Hanna-Barbera in association with Marvel Comics and debuted in 1967 on ABC.
Fremantle International Distribution (FID) has inked a deal with the BBC, which will see the return of the animated cult classic, DangerMouse. Under the pact, the BBC has acquired the animated superhero, DangerMouse, 18 x 25 min eps, and the first two series of the 15 minute version of the series, which are scheduled to air on BBC Daytime. September marks the 25th anniversary of the famed DangerMouse. Originally created and produced by Cosgrove Hall, DangerMouse, the secret agent mouse, and his bumbling sidekick, Penfold, premiered in 1981 on the UK’s ITV1, and has since aired in 80+ countries. DangerMouse is a part of the Thames back catalog, which is licensed by FremantleMedia Enterprises.
Nick Jr. will air a week’s worth of new episodes of its animated series The Wonder Pets!, beginning Monday, September 11-Thursday, September 14, at 11a. Rounding out the week on Friday, September 15 will be a 2-hour marathon of The Wonder Pets, 10:30a-12:30p.
Reaching a new distribution milestone, Anime Network is now available in 40 million HH in the US and Canada. Launched in 2002 as a free VOD service on Comcast, Anime Network can be seen on a number of platforms including its linear channel, VOD, Subscriptions VOD, PPV and transactional for both cable and satellite subscribers. Beginning September 13, 2006, Anime Network will be seen as a 24/7 linear channel via 17 service providers, and as a VOD service through 22 providers, which includes some its most recent carriage deals with Wide Open West and Harron Communications (linear) and Service Electric Cablevision and Knology (SVOD).
MARKETING/LICENSING
PixelPlay Inc. and New Line Cinema have partnered to launch a new interactive game based on New Line’s movie How to Eat Fried Worms. The game is available live on PixelPlay’s DishGames interactive game service from EchoStar Communications Corporation and its DISH Network satellite TV service. The game debuted in tandem last week with the release of the movie is available on DishGames,
Astaro Corporation, a developer of network security products, and Nintendo are partnering to integrate the Astaro Parental Control filter technology for the DS Browser, the web browser for both the Nintendo DS and DS Lite, which will block inappropriate web content. The Nintendo DS Browser is scheduled to launch across Europe on 6th October 2006.
Disney Channel and DishLATINO have joined together for a national tie-in promotion with the new Disney Channel Original Movie, The Cheetah Girls 2. The promotion runs through September 16, when one winner will win a trip to NY or LA and $1000 to spend at Sears, where Cheetah Girls branded apparel and accessories are sold.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Peter Dougherty has been named SVP/Branding, Cartoon Network. He will oversee the network’s on-air look, in-house creative services responsible for print, electronic and outdoor advertising, execution of sponsored promotions, sweepstakes and contests; and creative development for Cartoon Network Enterprises’ (CNE) licensing and merchandising business. Department heads reporting to Dougherty including Gary Albright, SVP/Creative Services; Pola Changnon, VP/On-air & Exec. Prod/Program Production; Sean Akins, Creative Director/Toonami and Miguzi; and Cynthia Rapp, VP/Creative Director, CNE. Dougherty will report to Jim Samples, EVP/GM, Cartoon Network US. Most recently Dougherty served as a creative consultant on products for Nickelodeon US (Nicktoons), Nickelodeon International, MTV and Nickelodeon Japan, CMT, SPIN (UK rep firm), and Telepiu. Prior to that, Dougherty spent 11 years with MTV Europe, beginning as an on-air promo producer and eventually becoming the network’s creative director and SVP.
Jamster has appointed Boris Hageney as VP/North America to expand its business development strategy in the US market and work closely with US carriers, record labels and other related content partners. Hageney will report to Jamster’s COO, Martin Ott. Prior to this, Hageney was responsible for managing all of the company’s business for all of Western Europe. Hageney has previously held various communications and marketing roles at KPMG (Berlin, Germany), Mundwerk AG (Germany); and Belvedere (Italy). Jamster International Sarl is a subsidiary of VeriSign, Inc.
