Good morning, it’s Thursday, August 20, 2009, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Who says print is dead? CBS will promote its new fall season this year in Entertainment Weekly with an ultra-thin embedded video ad co-sponsored by Pepsi Max that plays clips from the network’s Monday night primetime lineup. The Video-in-Print insert, powered by L.A.-based Americhip, will appear only in editions sent out to EW subscribers in New York and L.A. and is part of a wider “Monday to the Max” campaign. CBS.com is also launching a Pepsi Max-branded microsite featuring interviews with cast members, a trivia game and a social episode-viewing room.
A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM HISTORY
on Sept. 11, 2001 … For Your Emmy® Consideration: Outstanding Nonfiction Special
102 MINUTES THAT CHANGED AMERICA From the first plane that hit the World Trade Center to the collapse of the second tower,
this special weaves together footage and sound taken by over 100 eyewitnesses, presented with no narration and no commercial interruption. Preserved for this generation, and for the future.
In a further sign that premium programmers are growing comfortable with the UGC site, Time Warner has struck a deal with YouTube to distribute short clips of shows on the platform from networks such as CNN, TNT, the Cartoon Network, along with outtakes from Warner Bros. Television shows including Gossip Girl and The Ellen DeGeneres Show. The clips will be viewable on a Time Warner-provided embeddable player with ads sold by Warner Bros. Entertainment and Turner.
Some lucky iTunes season pass holders of AMC‘s Mad Men got a sneak peak of the third episode of the new season, “My Old Kentucky Home,” after either Apple or the network accidently made it temporarily available. Was it a gaffe or a brilliant publicity stunt? AMC’s not saying, but the NYTimes did pick up the story. The show is having its best year yet both on air and online; it’s been the top TV show download ($1.99 per standard def episode/$2.99 for HD) on the iTunes platform since its premiere last Sunday night.
Newbie cable network Shalom TV launched on Cablevision’s Free VOD service in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, extending its footprint to 36 million+ homes across the U.S.
Fantasy sports games publisher Fanball acquired the properties of fantasy publisher F+W Media, including the National Fantasy Football Championship and National Fantasy Baseball Championship contests.

Responding to the recent upswing in demand for more drastic advertising measures, web advertising services provider Premium Network is launching a new Homepage Takeover service enabling clients to launch takeover ads across a roster of about 100 sites in various categories. The company also works with Eyeblaser to develop integrated rich media ads and operates a white label service for clients who supply their own site list, according to CEO Ken Margolis.
Gannett’s social media marketing firm Ripple6 launched a new turnkey OnDemand ad platform that features an integrated social networking solution and templates for creating customized creative and stand-alone sites.
In response to the company’s demand to delay its releases, rental DVD chain Redbox has now filed a suit against Time Warner Home Video to protect its right to obtain new release movies. It is the third lawsuit filed by Redbox, following retaliatory actions against Universal and Fox. A federal court ruled this week that Redbox’s suit against Universal can move forward after the studio made a motion to dismiss.

Streamezzo is demoing its products next month at the IBC conference in Amsterdam.
Broadband penetration is improving in rural areas in the U.S. In fact, its growth rate has surpassed the growth of broadband in major cities over the past two years, according to a new ComScore study. Rural markets (pop. less than 10,000) experienced a 16 % point increase in broadband penetration from Q2 2007 to Q2 2009, making it the fastest growing geographic market segment in the nation. Comparatively, “micropolitan” areas (pop. between 10,000-50,000) grew 14 % points during the same period, while metropolitan areas (population 50,000+) grew 11 percentage points. Rural areas still have a long way to go, however, lagging by more than 20% points over major cities.

Rather than expect consumers to buy another device in today’s economy, it’s better to teach your old device new tricks. Sony announced it is launching a new digital reader platform for its PSP handheld gaming console, coming to the U.S. and key European territories this December. Sony’s going for the gaming demo first with this – the interface will be able download hundreds of new and classic Marvel, IDW and iVerse Media comics from the PlayStation store via Wi-Fi.
Following up on a plan to release mobile versions of Wikipedia across multiple devices, Wikipedia has launched a free iPhone app featuring basic access to the open source encyclopedia.
Everyone wants their gadget to make a bang across the marketplace, but this is a little much. Apple is investigating reports of exploding iPhones in Europe, reports Reuters.
Cartoon Network introduced a new online multiplayer flash game, TKO: Titanic Kungfubot Offensive, adding to its roster of over 200 casual games.
Starz Chairman and CEO and longtime cable veteran Robert. B. Brook Grubs was also appointed to lead training and curriculum development.

MySpace confirmed yesterday that it is in fact acquiring music discovery service iLike, a site that helped pioneer online recommendations based on the listening habits of like-minded friends. iLike is a fun, social site that works because of its ease of use and singular focus on cool music. Founded back in 2006, iLike began to catch fire when it began to build recommendation apps for the leading social networks and it now counts some 55 million users. MySpace, a company whose roots lie deeply embedded in the music space and that launched the MySpace Music venture with the major labels, actually seems to want to use the site’s recommendation technology to apply to other media — namely video. MySpace is under the gun to reinvent itself as Facebook continues to gain market share. It needs to work fast to build something new and fantastic, and a social video recommendation engine could be just the trick.
