Good Morning.  It’s Thursday, April 17, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.  And as always, if you prefer to watch this morning’s news instead of reading it, click here.

With Earth Day coming up on April 22, a couple of media enterprises have launched new green initiatives:

  • Next week, NBC Universal will serve up more than 100 hours of green-themed content across its 42 NBCU properties and 28 websites. NBCU also announced it would designate two other “Green Weeks” in November 2008 and April 2009. Both efforts tie in with NBCU’s “Green is Universal” initiative with the intent to raise awareness among consumers about environmental issues.
  • FOX began a public service campaign this week called “Green It. Mean It.” – with TV commercials featuring stars from such FOX shows as House, Bones and Back to You offering eco-friendly tips for viewers.

Tonight’s Premieres:
Fuse: Live Through This at 10p and The Brooklyn Way at 1030p

Tonight’s Finale:
ABC: Eli Stone at 10p

Lifetime Networks introduced Lifetime Television HD, its second hi-def channel behind Lifetime Movie Network HD which launched last year. Two distribution deals were confirmed with AT&T U-verse TV and Verizon FiOS TV to carry the new channel. Featured programming on Lifetime HD will include Lifetime’s Army Wives and Original Movies.

Tuesday night’s back-to-back season premieres of Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch series (9p and 10p) captured 3.4 million and 3.5 million total viewers respectively.

On Bravo Tuesday night, the network aired the first season finale of The Real Housewives of New York City (10p) which attracted 1.06 million A18-49 and 1.43 million total viewers. The network just announced the series was picked up for a second season. Also this night, the third season debut of Work Out (11p) tallied 593,000 A18-49 and 764,000 total viewers.

TLC introduces a revamped Thursday night schedule on April 24 starting with the season five premiere of Overhaulin’ at 8p; new episodes of American Chopper at 9p; and the return of Miami Ink at 10p.

Discovery Channel is teaming with the BBC Natural History Unit on a new documentary series called Frozen Planet slated to premiere in 2012. Over eight episodes shot in hi-def, the series will explore the eco systems and animals of the Arctic and Antarctic. This series will chronicle never-before-seen wilderness and animal behavior as the Russian Arctic region has been off-limits to filmmakers until just recently. Both the Discovery Channel and BBC Natural History Unit were production partners for the Planet Earth series. Frozen Planet is a global co-production between BBC, Discovery Channel, Discovery Channel Canada, Antena 3 (Spain), ZDF (Germany) and Skai (Greece) and was facilitated by BBC Worldwide.

FINAL NOTES AND OBSERVATIONS FROM OUR EXCELLENT EUROPEAN ADVENTURE

We were away for a total of eleven days – first to Cannes and then on to Venice.  Both beautiful destinations, despite the cold weather and the rain, and there were certain aspects of both we found particularly appealing:

In Cannes, the dogs are generally much smaller than they are in Venice. The bread is better, and the people seemed friendlier. You can easily walk almost everywhere, or simply hail a cab if needed.  We really enjoyed taking time just to sit and people watch in one of the numerous and always open cafes and began to understand the French way of thinking – sitting and sipping your coffee or eating your lunch, is always better than doing it on the run. MIP TV was definitely a working convention with lots of business being done, deals being written.

In Venice, it’s more scenic in all directions no matter where you are, and taxis can be much more fun, tho at times hard to find (or identify) and the house wine is better.  It’s also so much easier to get into trouble in Venice, and harder to get around because street signs are optional.  Everyone rides a three-speed Schwinn bicycle, whether you’re 5 or 95, and Gelato is as much a part of the day as coffee, no matter how chilly it is outside. Open cafes at any time of the day aren’t as prevalent, which is too bad given the great people watching you could do.  The Venice Festival of Media was interesting, geared mostly to advertisers, agencies and creative folks, focused on the business of working within the digital space.  While it identified numerous questions, the Festival’s numerous seminars over two days wasn’t able to answer many. Perhaps next year that will be a directive.

If pressed, I’d go back to both cities … any time!

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Marissa Jaret Winokur has been signed by Sony TV for a daytime TV syndication deal, possibly for Fall 2009, per Variety.  Also coming for fall 2009 – daytime talker with Marie Osmond from Program Partners.  What do these two have in common?  Dancing with the Stars.

Several casting briefs:

  • Jennie Garth will not appear on CBS’ Sony TV comedy pilot My Best Friends Girl after all. Jennie may be added to The CW’s new 90210 spinoff as her former character Kelly Taylor who returns to high school this time as a fashion design teacher.  Kristin Booth was signed to replace Garth as the female lead.
  • Fresh off ABC’s Carpoolers, Jerry O’Connell was signed to star in FOX’s pilot comedy The Inn from 20th TV, Reveille and Principato-Young. Jerry will play the general manager of the chic New York hotel where the action takes place.
  • Denis O’Hare was tapped for CBS’ drama presentation The Tower about a group of Chicago newspaper reporters from CBS Paramount. He will play the newspaper editor.

ABC Studios made a two-year pact with author Jennifer Weiner to create and executive produce series projects for the studio. Jennifer’s novel In Her Shoes was developed into a 2005 feature film starring Cameron Diaz. She currently has a novel Little Earthquakes in development at Universal and a short story The Guy Not Taken in development at DreamWorks.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:   Rumblings of a possible digital window release shift have began to erupt as 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment quietly released Juno for sale on iTunes for $14.99 on Tuesday, the same day the DVD hit stores. (It is the first Fox movie to be sold on the Apple site.) Paramount has also been experimenting with new releases on the platform, despite widely held concerns of cannibalization.   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORYYip Yip!  Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the Nickelodeon animated series, and M. Night Shyamalan get out your calendars.  OK, ready?  Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies will release the newly green-lit M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender, a live-action movie adaptation of the series, on Friday, July 2, 2010.  Shyamalan will direct and produce The Last Airbender from his own script.  The word “Avatar” was no doubt dropped from the feature film title to steer clear of confusion with director James Cameron 3D movie Avatar, which is set for release 8 months earlier in December 2009 and is not for kids.  Joining Shyamalan as producers on the project are Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, Sam Mercer and Scott Aversano.  Additionally, Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, creators of the animated Avatar: The Last Airbender series, wills serve as executive producers on the movie.  While Shyamalan’s movies are generally for adult audiences, The Last Airbender is targeted to moviegoers of all ages, with Shyamalan pointing to Hayao Miyazaki storytelling and movies as an inspiration.   Full edition: CYN KIDS.
