Discovery Communications promoted Gabriel Sauerhoff to the role of Senior Vice President, Digital Distribution. Sauerhoff, a 7-year Discovery veteran, will oversee strategy, development and execution of Discovery’s digital media distribution business.
NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises named Monica Gil to the newly created position of Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs. Most recently, Gil was Senior Vice President and General Manager of Multicultural Growth and Strategy at Nielsen.
Frank C. Biancuzzo and Michael J. Hayes have been promoted from their positions as Senior Vice Presidents at Hearst Television, to Executive Vice Presidents. They will continue to share responsibility for management oversight of the bulk of the company’s portfolio of 30 television stations and two radio stations, in tandem with Hearst Television President Jordan Wertlieb.
OZY Media is adding three members to its in-house video team. The new, New York-based group includes Video Producers Alexander Hotz and Kevin O’Dowd, and Video Production Assistant Natalie Roe.
Univision Communications, Inc. promoted Rosemary Mercedes to Executive Vice President and Chief Communications Officer. She had been serving as interim head of Corporate Communications and Public Relations since August 2016.
Karina Kogan joined Turner‘s flagship entertainment brands TBS and TNT as Senior Vice President of Digital Media and Products. She last served as Executive Vice President of Digital for Participant Media.
David Lynn was named President and CEO of Viacom International Media Networks. Lynn had been President of operations in the UK and Northern and Eastern Europe.
Magnus Djaba has been appointed Global President of Saatchi & Saatchi, after serving as CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi London since 2011. Global CEO Robert Senior will be leaving after a transition period to “pursue personal ambitions.”
Alex Kaplan was appointed Executive Vice President, Commercial for Discovery Communications’ Eurosport Digital. Previously, Kaplan held senior leadership roles at the National Basketball Association and DirecTV/AT&T.
The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers and its global arm, the International Society of Broadband Experts, named Matt Aden as Vice President of Sales and Operations. Aden has served as SVP of worldwide sales for Casa Systems and Terayon Communications and as VP of sales for Harmonic and Concurrent.
GRB Entertainment named Saul Goldberg to the position of Senior Vice President of Development. Most recently, Goldberg was Head of Unscripted Television at Covert Media.
Amit Ziv was named Vice President, Strategy and Business Development at Freeform. He last served as Senior Vice President of Business Operations, Development and Strategy for EPIX.
CNBC has appointed Jonathan Meyers as General Manager and Senior Vice President of Events. He previously served as Senior Vice President of Strategy and Operations for CNBC Digital. In addition, Ylan Mui joins CNBC as a reporter in the Washington, DC bureau, effective February 1. Mui had been a CNBC contributor.
Frank Kavilanz was promoted to Senior Vice President of Social Strategy and Solutions for Turner Ignite. Since joining the company, Kavilanz has led the development of the company’s social distribution capability, called Launchpad.
Christian Fritzsche was hired as Vice President of International Sales of Entertainment One. Fritzsche previously worked at BBC Worldwide where he built up the scripted business for Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Scripps Networks Interactive announced that Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Kenneth W. Lowe was appointed as Chair of the Supervisory Board of TVN, the Warsaw-based, multi-platform media company acquired by Scripps in July 2015. In a parallel move, President of Scripps Networks International, Jim Samples, who had led TVN since July 2016, was named President of TVN’s management board.
Troika hired Bonnie Rosen as Account Director. She previously spent six years at Viacom
Media Networks in multiple roles from Counsel to Director of Business Development within Content Distribution.
Viacom promoted James Currell to Executive Vice President, Managing Director of VIMN UK, Northern and Eastern Europe. He had been Chief Operating Officer. In addition, Channel 5’s Chief Operating Officer, Paul Dunthorne, has been promoted to the same role for VIMN UK, Northern and Eastern Europe.
Thomas Tull resigned from Legendary Entertainment and will assume the role of Founding Chairman of the company he established and led as Chairman and CEO since 2005. Wanda Cultural Industry Group, which acquired Legendary in January 2016, named Dr. Jack Gao, Group Senior VP & CEO, International Investments and Operations, Wanda Cultural Industry Group as Interim CEO.
Armoza Formats is expanding its sales division, with Sharon Levi appointed to the role of Head of Sales, where she will be managing the sales division, and Louise Melzack joining the team as Sales Executive for Asia.
Propagate is launching an international division, headed by Cyrus Farrokh as President. Farrokh joins the company from Electus International, where he served as Senior Vice President, Head of Sales. Supporting Farrokh on the international team are Jay Weisleder, who will be focusing on Latin America and Spanish-speaking territories and Jimmy McNider, who will focus on European territories.
Carat has named Anathea Ruys Senior Vice President, Managing Director of its LA office. Most recently, Ruys was head of Fuse, the branded content, sponsorship and ideation division of Ominicom Media Group Asia Pacific.
Sandy Ashendorf joins Epix as Executive Vice President of Content Distribution. Ashendorf had been EVP of Distribution as BBC Worldwide America.
DGA National Executive Director Jay Roth is retiring later this spring, transitioning to a senior advisor role. “I’m proud of what we’ve all accomplished together to build the guild and advance our mission of protecting the creative and economic rights of our members every single new contract, compensation increase, residual, creative right and expansion of jurisdiction that has allowed our members the freedom and security to create the best motion pictures in the world,” said Roth. A succession plan will be announced in February.
Salil Mehta has been named President of FoxNext, a newly-created division that will work across Twentieth Century Fox Film and Fox Networks Group to oversee video gaming, location-based entertainment, virtual and augmented reality productions. Mehta first joined Fox in 2013 and most recently served as President, Content Management for Twentieth Century Fox Film.
IM Global Television announced two hires on the heels of launching its unscripted division headed by Phil Gurin. Betty Chen joins the company as SVP of business affairs of international distribution and co-productions, and Tyler Massey joins as VP of international distribution and co-productions. Chen most recently was VP of business affairs at ITV Global Entertainment; Massey returns to IM Global Television, where he first worked as a consultant.
Music Choice promoted Nadine Santos to director, programming & artist relations. Since 2016, Santos has been successful in creating artist integration programs with acts including Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, Coldplay and Bruno Mars.
Matthew Kearns and Dan Hadl each signed new long-term agreements and were promoted to EVPs of business affairs for Lionsgate. Kearns supervises business affairs for Greenleaf, Graves and The Royals, along with the upcoming special event miniseries American Lion. Hadl recently handled negotiations for Lionsgate’s TV and film franchise The Kingkiller Chronicle and spearheads business affairs for Orange is the New Black, Nashville and Casual, among others.
Indie production/distribution house Tinopolis Group appointed David Mortimer to the new role of director of content. Mortimer hails from NBCUniversal, where he was SVP of factual & entertainment, overseeing unscripted production companies in the UK, Australia, Canada and Asia.
David Brownfield has joined The Mark Gordon Company as EVP. Brownfield, who comes from Eleven Stitches Productions, where he served as Executive Producer, will supervise all production activities for TMGC’s current series as well as work closely with the company’s creative team in developing premium television content.
