Good morning. It’s Tuesday, September 16, 2014, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
Age and experience may make all the difference when it comes to your salary – in a good way! Cynopsis Media’s first comprehensive Salary Survey found that these elements translated into a 60 percent difference in pay, or nearly $100,000 for those in the television industry. The data was collected from more than 3,160 respondents through an online email survey sent to Cynopsis subscribers and distributed through social media from July 9-17, 2014. Assembled data included deep specifiers such as gender, company size, and career levels in order to effectively evaluate compensation rates and satisfaction. Respondents also shared details on “soft” benefits like perks, flex time maternity leave and company-sponsored programs. Other highlights included:
Buying and Planning: Age and gender have the least impact when it came to pay in buying and planning careers within the TV industry. Women reported 16 percent lower salaries, compared to their male counterparts: but that’s still six percent higher than the rest of the industry. Older employees took home 25 percent more than younger staff, which is below the 34 percent average.
Finance and Legal: Experience was a major factor in these departments. Newcomers earned half of what those with more seasoning received, and those who worked more than 45 hours per week made 34 percent more than those putting in fewer hours. Although 70 percent of legal and finance participants recorded a bonus last year above the industry norm at every level (to the tune of $3,500 more), a third of administration and entry-level employees were very dissatisfied with their salaries.
Human Resources and Operations: Twice the number of women than men had the jobs in this department, earning more than the guys in three out of five job levels. The biggest difference in pay was in the type of company; high-end production and film companies and low-end ad agencies saw a 59 percent disparity.
Marketing and Public Relations: Location, type of company and size made all the difference in compensation for marketing and PR roles. A 40 percent gap existed between highest paying regions (Northeast and West) and the lowest (Midwest and South) – a $40,000 difference. Firms with 401-1,000 employees pay best 18 percent more than smaller firms. Syndication companies saw the top earners, with 23 percent higher salaries than cable network employees.
Production and Development: Duration and experience accounted for the highest salaries. Those with a company for more than 16 years made a cool 26 percent more than those with 8-16 years under their belt, and 43 percent more than those with less than eight years at a company. There was a 62 percent difference in salary when it came to experience level. Overall, 60 percent recorded satisfaction with their pay.
Programming: Company type played the biggest role in compensation variance in this department. Respondents reported a 72 percent gap, with syndication companies on the high end and news affiliates on the low end. 75% of programmers were the most satisfied with their pay.
Research: Location was the main factor here when it came to compensation, with a 43 percent discrepancy between highest and lowest regions: double the industry norm. Age also played a role, with those 45 and over making 40 percent more than younger employees.
Sales and Distribution: Gender and age accounted for the biggest differences in salary for this sector. There was a 22 percent gap among almost all levels, and a 30 percent inequality for those younger than 45. Sales and distribution employees took home the highest bonuses: $19,900 on average, for more than three-quarters of respondents.
Executive Management: Surprisingly, age, tenure and experience didn’t matter when it came to salary for C-level execs and presidents in the business. Bonus amounts were some of the highest in this department with $22,400 on average, and satisfaction with salary also reported above industry norms.
