CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

09/13/04

Good morning. It’s Monday, September 13, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

NBC‘s evening of premieres on Thursday night delivered the Peacock a good win, though just a notion ahead of ABC’s NFL Opening kickoff night.  NBC delivered a 6.1/17 for the evening among A18-49 according to Nielsen Media Research, with ABC earning a 5.9/16 for the Colts v. Patriots game (8-11p). Joey premiered at 8pm with a 7.2/23, not in the same league as the premiere of Friends last year (33 share) and even lower than the very first premiere of Friends in 1994 (27 share), but still a good start.  In that 8-830p half hour, its biggest competition came from both ABC and CBS, each posting a 10 share.  (This Thursday the competition steps up vs. Joey with the premiere of Survivor on CBS). The Apprentice aired a special 90m premiere ep and it delivered a 6.6/17, starting off its first half hour with a 19 share, and dipping to a 16 and then ending with a 17 share for the final half hour. While that is certainly a reasonable beginning, the competition will get stiffer when CBS’ CSI premieres on 9/23.  Additionally, football beat The Apprentice during the 9-10p hour (7.1/18 vs. 6.6/17).  ABC Football also won the 10p hour with a 6.8/18. Despite the softer than anticipated premiere numbers for The Apprentice, it should also be noted The Apprentice was a hot topic of conversation on many of the daytime chat shows on Friday, so look for better numbers this Thursday. NBC’s premiere of Medical Investigation at 10p earned a 4.8/13, second only to the football game on ABC, and down from its Apprentice lead-in (17 share in the final half hour). Overall for the game, ABC earned a 5.9/16 for the game among A18-49, but bested that number among the key male demos: 8.2/23 M18-49, 7.2/24 M18-34, and 9.3/23 M25-54, winning each of those male demos.

A compelling story on NBC‘s Dateline another new ep of Medical Investigation in its regular time period, helped draw enough viewers to the network to win Friday night among A18-49 by a tenth of a rating point over a good college ball match up on ABC:  3.3/11 vs. 3.2/11, according to Nielsen Media Research.  At 8pm ABC led with a 2.9/11 with the football game, while NBC was a close #2 with a 2.6/10. Fox’s installment of The Complex Malibu was a dismal 1.2/4. At 9pm NBC pulled out in front with the second hour of Dateline averaging a 3.6/12, ahead of ABC’s game 3.0/10; WB and CBS was #3 with a 5 share.  Fox’s repeat of The Next Great Champ pulled a slight 3 share and the repeat of UPN’s Amish in the City scored a 0.5/2.  At 10p, NBC and ABC were neck and neck again, with NBC ahead by a share point:  3.8/12 vs. 3.6/11. CBS’ repeat of CSI earned a 2.4/7.

Fox premiered its Saturday night schedule and won the night with an overall 2.2/8 A18-49 in fast affiliate ratings according to Nielsen Media Research.  The premiere of Cops at 8pm delivered a 1.9/7, followed by a 2.3/8 for the 830p show, both winning their respective half hours. America’s Most Wanted premiere at 9pm earned a 2.2/7, tied with the second and expanded hour of the repeat of The Apprentice (additional Board Room footage was added to this repeat). At 10p the final hour of the US Open Tennis Women’s final earned 2.6/8, ahead of NBC’s Crossing Jordan (1.8/6) and the 10p hour of ABC College Football (1.3/4).

Tonight’s Premieres:

WB: 7th Heaven at 8pm, Everwood at 9pm

In a letter to the Board of Directors dated September 9, 2004, Michael Eisner, CEO/The Walt Disney Company, laid out his two year exit plan finishing with his contract expiration date, September 30, 2006.  Concerning a successor, Eisner not surprisingly put forth and endorsed Robert Iger, President/Disney, however, according to the New York Times other potential candidates from outside the kingdom include: Peter Chernin, President/News Corp., Jeff Bewkes, Chairman/Entertainment & Networks Group, Time Warner, and Terry Semel, CEO/Yahoo.

CBS is pushing back the premiere of the next season of The Amazing Race, a premiere originally scheduled for September 25, then moved back to October 2, and now moved back to late October or early November. The current installment of Amazing Race will finish up with its finale next week.

WPP Group will acquire Grey Global Group Inc. in a deal said to be valued in the $1.52 billion neighborhood, or $1,005 a share in cash and stock.  In a bidding war, WPP Group out-maneuvered the French owned Havas SA and a combined offered from Hellman & Friedman LLC and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co., according to the Wall Street Journal.  The WSJ also reports WPP is expected to maintain Grey has a separate unit, as well as Mediacom, Grey’s media-buying agency.  Grey’s chief executive Edward Meyer will be named Chairman and CEO of the unit for two years, and Grey Worldwide will report to him as well. Grey is listed as one of the top 10 largest agencies in the world by revenue.

Orville Lewis Duke, better known as O.L. Duke, age 51, was killed in a car accident this past Saturday in New York state while on his way home from performing in the Off-Broadway play, Waitin’ 2 End Hell.  Duke appeared on several primetime series including Law & Order, Homicide: Life on the Street, NYPD Blue and was a regular on HBO’s Oz. His film career included Malcolm X, Antwone Fisher and Sugar Hill, while arguably his big break came when he replaced Denzel Washington in the original production of A Solder’s Play.
