On Friday, the FCC threw out an appeal from News Corp.’s Fox Television division to overturn an indecency rule involving an April 2003 episode of Married by America which featured male and female strippers, according to the Wall Street Journal. The FCC fined thirteen FOX affiliates that had complaints filed against them at $7,000 each for a total of $91,000. Originally, the FCC wanted to fine all stations that aired the episode before 10p which would have amounted to $1.12 million. NBC ordered six additional episodes of the midseason drama Lipstick Jungle, per Variety. So far in the Thursday 10p time period, the series has averaged a 2.6/7 among A18-49. ABC will resume production of Women’s Murder Club in the next few weeks as Robert Nathan joined the production crew at 20th Century Fox as showrunner. The future of the show was uncertain after two showrunners, Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain left the show as well as executive producer Scott Gemmill. The series will return to ABC’s schedule in April. BBC America acquired two seasons of the prehistoric thriller called Primeval, produced by Impossible Pictures for ITV and distributed by BBC Worldwide. The hour-long series is about a zoologist who discovers dinosaurs living in the present day which threatens human existence. BBC America also announced the third season of Hotel Babylon will not premiere in March as previously planned. Taking its place will be season three of MI-5 starting March 12 at 9p. Post Newsweek stations WKMG/Orlando and WDIV/Detroit may be pulling its signal off cable operator Bright House Networks in those two cities if a deal for retransmission consent cannot be reached by the March 16 deadline, reports B&C. So far, there have been three extensions in this negotiation, and Post Newsweek says it’s out of granting extensions. Potentially affected are 800,000 Bright House cable customers in Orlando and 100,000 in Detroit. Adding muscle to the Post Newsweek argument is not just that viewers would miss many first run episodes of favorite CBS and NBC programs, but the NCAA March Madness kicks off on March 20th. Weekend Box Office Estimates: Feb 22-24, 2008 ~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~
ABC Family has picked up the pilot Roommates to a full series after the project signed Dorian Brown in the female lead. According to Variety, the project had a cast contingent order from Acme Prods. Also cast are Tyler Francavilla, Tommy Dewey, Tamery Mowry and David Weidoff. ~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~
CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Prepare for another bargaining session played out in the media. Electronic Arts went public with its unsolicited bid for troubled Grand Theft Auto game publisher Take-Two Interactive, increasing its offer to $26/share or $2 billion after an earlier bid of $25/share was rejected. EA is out to reclaim its spot as the leading US game software producer, which it lost when Vivendi signed an agreement to purchase Activision late last year. Take-Two has had its hands full in recent years, defending the violent and racy content of its games, correcting accounting irregularities and attempting to diversify its portfolio. But its Grand Theft Auto IV game, due out in late April, has had gamers salivating for months. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. (Or to listen to the Cynopsis Digital Podcast click here or subscribe to it at iTunes here .) CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: The 80th Annual Academy Awards were handed last night live on ABC from the Kodak Theatre in LA. Among the winners were bests in Animated Feature Film of the Year, which was awarded to Brad Bird for Disney’s Ratatouille. In the Animated Short Film, BreakThru Films (UK), Se-ma-for Studios Production (Poland), Director, Suzie Templetom and Producer, Hugh Welchman won for their stop-motion animated short title Peter & the Wolf, based on Prokofiev’s version of Peter and the Wolf. Also taking home Oscar last night is the special effects team for The Golden Compass, a New Line movie in association with Ingenious Film Partners, which by the way surprisingly (at least to me) won out over Transformers (DreamWorks and Paramount movie in association with Hasbro), as well as Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (Disney). A full list of nominees and winners can be found at www.oscar.com. Full edition: CYN KIDS. CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Singapore’s MediaCorp media company has joined several other companies to purchase a stake in the new, Vietnam-based International Media Corporation (IMC). Its share in the new company will be 20%. Vietnamese ad company FS Communications, a business group, and confectionery corp Kinh Do Corporation invested in the new firm, which will produce news content centered on entertainment and finance as well as work with Vietnam Multimedia Corporation. IMC will make its debut in the second half of 2008. Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL. ~ RATINGS ~
