Cynopsis: Kids!
04/13/09
Good morning. It’s Monday, April 13, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Disney‘s new movie Hannah Montana: The Movie, starring Miley Cyrus and based on the Disney Channel series of the same name, sang its way to the top of the box office charts in its opening weekend with a total of $34 million (3,118 theaters) in box office receipts and breaking some records along the way. Hannah Montana: The Movie, the second Hannah Montana movie in as many years, took in an estimated $17.3 million in its first day, Friday, April 10, to become the biggest opening day for a G-rated live-action picture, squeaking by the $17.0 million earned by Disney’s High School Musical 3: Senior Year (10/24/2008), per Box Office Mojo. The movie also bested that of last year’s concert movie, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour (2/1/2008), which earned $8.7 million in its first day and $31.1 million (683 theaters) in its first weekend.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Looks like Maggie Gyllenhaal is joining the cast of Universal‘s movie titled Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, the sequel to Nanny McPhee (January 27, 2006), per Production Weekly. Gyllenhaal will star opposite Emma Thompson, who revives her role as the enchanted Nanny McPhee. Set 100 years after the first movie during WW II, Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang is slated to begin principle photography next month at England’s Shepperton Studios.

Shout! Factory inks a multiyear pact with Hasbro to release DVDs of several animated properties based on the toymaker’s product lines, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Included in the deal are episodes of the 1980s animated TV series The Transformers and G.I. Joe, and the direct-to-DVD animated movie My Little Pony: Twinkle Wish Adventure. The first title under the agreement is The Transformers: The Complete First Season 25th Anniversary Edition, which releases June 16, 2009. For those of you about to check your calendars, that is a week before Paramount and DreamWorks release director Michael Bay’s live-action Transformers sequel, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, on June 24. The pact potentially includes the release of further My Little Pony movies.
