Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Friday, January 25, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The BBC is getting ready to launch MyCBBC, an online social network targeted to K6-12, an audience that is not served by competing sites all of which require members to be older, this April 2008.  The BBC, a publicly funded broadcast service, is being disparaged for this move, according to This Is London, with critics saying that commercial online outlets are already providing like services and that the public broadcaster should focus on programming.  The BBC says MyCBBC will be a safe site for kids, with full protection against predators, and users will not be able to make contact with strangers.

Disney has unveiled plans to re-release the first two Disney/Pixar Toy Story movies in 3D.  The original movies will be converted into 3D, with Toy Story set for release October 2, 2009, followed by Toy story 2 on February 12, 2010.  Both new 3D Toy Story releases come ahead of the Toy Story 3, which is being completely produced in 3D and is schedule for release on June 18, 2010.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Channel hosts the world premiere of the music video for the Jonas Brothers’ song When You Look Me in the Eyes, tonight, January 25 at 9:45p, following the premiere of its Original Movie Minutemen.  The Jonas Brothers will star in the music-filled Disney Channel Original Movie Camp Rock, scheduled to premiere in summer 2008, and the upcoming Disney Channel comedy/spy series, J.O.N.A.S., which begins production in 2008.

Nickelodeon Latin America, in partnership with UNICEF, will launch a new initiative with a mission to encourage kids throughout Latin America to help make the world a better place by knowing their rights, voicing opinions and taking action.  The effort includes the introduction of Verdito, a new square-shaped green animated character, which will debut on-air with short-form messaging in Latin America on January 28.

Animal Planet International has commissioned a second season of 12×30 episodes of Going Ape from indie producer Tigress Productions.  The new season, tentatively titled Going Ape 2, is currently being filmed in Cameroon and continues to focus on the ongoing efforts of veterinarians and volunteers to save and rehabilitate endangered chimpanzees and gorillas in the rain forest.  The new season is slated to premiere in all international markets in 2008.

MARKETING/LICENSING

As the environment remains a chief concern among kids, per a recent Scholastic News online poll, Scholastic has launched Act Green!, an interactive website designed to empower kids to preserve the environment by offering kids, parents and teachers a range of free information such as green activities/plans, tips, short films provided by Live Earth, games, and quizzes among others.

Mattel, E! Entertainment Television and Badgley Mischka have joined to create a new Barbie, one that celebrates the glamour of the red carpet, with The Pink Label E! Live From The Red carpet by Badgley Mischka Barbie Doll.  The new Barbie ($34.95) debuts this month at Toys R Us, E!, select dealers, and B arbieCollector.com .  Barbie no doubt has her fingers crossed for a WGA strike resolution and a red carpet filled awards season.

Kidtoon Films, a distributor of G-rated movie programs, has entered into a promotional partnership with My Gym Enterprises.  Under the deal each partner will promote the other in stores and movie theaters including My Gym handing out such as Kidtoon-branded toys and movie discounts in their gyms.  Kidtoon will feature My Gym exercise interstitials during its matinee program and in on-screen theatre advertising through PreFlix, an in-cinema ad company.  Additionally, there will be coordinated online efforts.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Chello Zone names Wayne Dunsford as the GM of JimJam, the new global preschool channel. Dunsford, who was key in the creation of the network with HIT Entertainment and Chellomedia, will manage the relationship with the joint venture partners, as well as overseeing the channel’s business and worldwide rollout.  Dunsford is credited with growing BBC Worldwide channels and development, creation and launch of new BBC Worldwide channels.

Kabillion names Rebecca Agbe-Davies as Director/Programming and Development.  Agbe-Davies will oversee content acquisitions and scheduling for the On Demand and online platforms, in addition to serving as liaison with MSOs, working with artists and animators to develop branded packaging and coordinating project financing.  Most recently she was an associate producer with Discovery Kids.  Kabillion makes its first trip to NATPE next week.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products names Heather Meeker as Director/Worldwide Public Relations.  She will work closely with the domestic and international sales and retail teams, as well as worldwide marketing, to create awareness for Warner Bros. entertainment brand licensing portfolio and products.  Meeker will report to Barry Ziehl, VP/Worldwide Marketing and Public Relations.  Most recently, she was Manager/Public Relations, Yahoo!

RATINGS

Nickelodeon’s premiere of the second season of its show The Naked Brothers Band with a 1-hour episode Monday, January 21, at 8p, was the top broadcast and cable show for the night among Tweens 9-14, with 1.8 million, an increase of +192% over the time period last year, also marking the series’ best performance in the demo.
