CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!
01/13/06
Good morning. It’s Friday, January 13, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Marvel‘s half human-half vampire superhero, Blade, is headed to Spike TV in an original two-hour adaptation of the Blade trilogy that is set to debut on the network in June 2006. Produced by New Line Television, Blade is Spike TV’s first original scripted project will feature Kirk “Sticky” Jones in the title role of Blade. The cast for the TV movie will also includes, Jill Wagner, Neil Jackson, Nelson Lee and Jessica Gower. True, the movie trilogy was rated R and Spike TV is not targeted to kids, but this TV movie will definitely draw comic book/superhero fans no matter what age.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Cartoon Network‘s animated series Dexter’s Laboratory will join the programming lineup on Boomerang, the classic cartoon network, beginning Monday, January 16, with a 12-hour marathon (10a-10p). The series will move to its regular daily time-slots the following day at 8a & 9p. Created by Genndy Tartakovsky (Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars) Dexter’s Laboratory debuted on Cartoon Network in 1995, as its first original series, and is now considered a classic cartoon by the network. Additionally, Dexter will serve as Boomerang’s January Character of the Month and will be featured Saturday, January, 21, 2-4p.
4Kids Entertainment, Inc has inked a deal that will see the animated Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (52 x 30 min) series airing on Nickelodeon channels in the UK, Spain, Australia and Latin America. The series is currently airing in a number of countries including: RTL2 (Germany); Media Set (Italy); RTE (Ireland); YTV (Canada); TVNZ (New Zealand); SIC (Portugal); RTL-TVI (Belgium); Star Channel (Greece); SABC2 (South Africa); Children’s Channel (Israel); and Canal J (France), among others.
Correction: As you might have guessed the new G4 & Hasbro created Anime Blast programming block will air on G4 at 8p, and not 8a.
McDonald’s Corporation has named China Retail Management the Master Licensee for the McDonald’s McKids line across Asia, excluding Japan and India. The multi-million dollar deal was set up by DIC Entertainment as part of DIC’s new role as Worldwide Licensing Agent for active play toys, entertainment and apparel for McDonald’s Corporation. Under the agreement CRM will work with DIC and McDonald’s to develop the retail consumer product line for Asia, and will design, produce, market and distribute McDonald’s McKids product lines that support McDonald’s “balanced, active lifestyles” brand strategy. Additionally, DIC is currently developing new programs and products for McDonald’s McKids brand and a line of vintage McDonald’s apparel to launch in 2006. A subsidiary of the Cornerstone Group, China Retail Management also distributes licensed product for Disney, Warner Bros. and exclusively operates Coca-Cola Stores in China.
Musicland Holding Corp., the specialty retailer that operates 800+ retail/online stores under the names Sam Goody, Suncoast Motion Picture Company, and MediaPlay.com and its subsidiaries, have filed voluntarily for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the US Bankruptcy Code. The company says filing for Chapter 11 is necessary to complete its restructuring efforts and refine its business model. Musicland has commitments for up to $75 million in debtor-in-possession financing from its existing bank group, led by Wachovia as agent, which will enable it to continue to operate during the restructuring period. The company attributes its financial struggle to a combination of a shrinking music and movies marketplace, growing competition from big box retailers and the increase of music downloading.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Peter Rice President, Fox Filmed Entertainment, the new teen/young adult-focused creative content division, announced the appointment of John Hegeman as COO of the division. In his new role, Hegeman alongside Rice will manage all aspects of the company, including production, acquisitions, marketing and distribution. An industry veteran and former President/Worldwide Marketing, Lions Gate Entertainment, Hegeman is well known for his early use of the internet and other marketing strategies in the marketing of the movie The Blair Witch Project (1999).
