Cynopsis: Kids!
08/07/09
Good morning. It’s Friday, August 7, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Send it On, a new song for Disney’s Friends for Change: Project Green initiative, performed by Miley Cyrus, Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato, premieres today on Radio Disney. The song will be available on iTunes beginning Tuesday, August 11, with all proceeds benefiting environmental charities via the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund. The music video for Send it On is set to premiere Friday, August 14 on Disney Channel and Saturday, August 15 on Disney.com and ABC. Additionally, Disney Channel will debut the 30-minute special, Lights, Camera, Take Action! Backstage with Disney’s Friends for Change, a behind the scenes look at the campaign, on Friday, August 28, after the premiere of the new TV movie, Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie (8-10p).
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Scholastic Media will launch several new live-action and animated series at Mipcom and MipJunior this October:
In the live-action arena, Scholastic Media has two new properties based on books and an original series:
- The Wedding Planner’s Daughter, based on the book series by Coleen Murtagh Paratore, which follows Willa (17) on her mission to find love for herself and her commitment phobic mother.
- Goddesses, stemming from Greek mythology the story revolves around three teen sisters who are mistakenly sent by their father, Zeus, to Athens … Georgia instead of Athens, Greece. In Georgia, where they are unable to use their goddess powers, the teens must find their way to survive high school.
- Additionally, Scholastic Media offers its original comedy Motor City, about three 20-something friends living in Detroit and dealing with all the firsts that being a young adult brings … first loves, apartments and jobs.
For preschoolers Scholastic introduces three new animated projects
- Chicken Socks – based on the Klutz activity book franchise, is set in a clubhouse and invites viewers on adventures of creation and learning.
- Dragoonies – a preschool-aimed sing-along series that follows six little dragon pals as they head to school for the firs time.
- Fuzz and Sparkle follows disco-loving aliens as they embrace their inner explorer with humor and music.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Cartoon Network hosts the world premiere of Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins on Sunday, September 13, at 7-9p. Co-produced by Cartoon Network and Warner Premiere, the mixed live-action and CGI-animated movie explores the origins of how the Mystery Inc. gang of meddling kids (and their Scooby-Doo) came together to solve their first mystery. The original animated Scooby-Doo series was produced by Hanna-Barbera and premiered in September 1969 on CBS.
New episodes, new time slots, broadcast deals and toy launches for the preschool animated series The WotWots. The WotWots is produced by Pukeko Pictures and made at Richard Taylor’s Weta Workshop (Lord of the Rings). In the UK Five’s Milkshake! block is moving The WotWots to its new time slot at 8:35a beginning September 7, with all new episodes of the series debuting from October 13. In Australia, ABC1 & ABC2 begin screening new episodes this week at 9a and 12:40p weekdays, respectively. Meanwhile in New Zealand, TVNZ continues to air The WotWots weekdays at 8:50a. Hasbro is set to launch a new toy line (e.g. plush, figures, play sets, publishing) based on the WotWots this September in Australia and New Zealand and October in the UK. Additionally, ABC Commercial’s International Program Sales group has sold The WotWots animated series to MTV Finland, Canal + ‘Mini Mini kids channel’ (Poland), Thai Public Broadcasting Thailand and Media Corp Singapore, with further deals to be announced soon.
Decode Enterprises furthers its relationship with South African pay-TV broadcaster M-Net inks a new distribution deal for 100+ hours of programming. Under the agreement, M-Net acquires Super Why!, Mighty Jungle and Side Show Christmas and additional seasons of Franny’s Feet, Naturally Sadie, Delilah & Julius and Bo on the Go!
Beyond Distribution acquires Jump!, a documentary about competitive jump roping from Nutshell Productions, which will launch at MIPCOM in October. Not specifically aimed at kids, the doc explores the worldwide sport, which is far more complex than one might think, as it follows five teams from the US as they vie to be the best at the World Rope Skipping Championship.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Marvel Entertainment expands its partnership with Old Navy with a back-to-school promotion celebrating Marvel’s 70th anniversary. Launching this month in the US and Canada, the promotion includes an exclusive collection of merchandise (t-shirts, hoodies, outerwear etc.) featuring Marvel’s super heroes. Additionally, the promotion includes the offer of a limited edition Amazing Fantasy #15 reprint (featuring the first appearance of Spider-Man) with purchase of a Marvel Collectabilitee t-shirt (while supplies last).
The Dangerous Book for Boys and The Dangerous Book for Girls are teaming up with Burger King for a new BK Kids Meal promotion, which launches August 24, 2009 for a three-week period. The promotion will feature a collection of six toys based on the books, with one available in each BK Kids Meal. The promotional deal was brokered by The Sharpe Company, Inc. on behalf of the UK-based Rocket Licensing, which represents AM Heath & Co and the authors of The Dangerous Books for Boys, and HarperCollins US, publisher of The Daring Book for Girls. The promotion has already run in several countries including the UK, Germany, Brazil, Mexico and New Zealand.
Chapman Entertainment appoints Kidz Entertainment as the new Scandinavian licensing agent for its properties Roary the Racing Car and Fifi and the Flowertots. Kidz will oversee and build on existing deals with license partners Scandinavia, including master toy, DVD and publishing deals and establish new deals, as well as building marketing campaigns for both the Roary and Fifi brands. This agreement expands on their relationship, which began in 2008 when Chapman tapped Kidz serve as its agent across 28 Eastern European countries.
A special logo has been developed to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Charles Schulz’s Peanuts. CPLG, which was appointed by United Media earlier this year to manage the rights in the UK, is helping guide new and existing UK licensees using the new brand look that includes the new Then and Now vintage theme, which rolls out from December 2009. CPLG has signed new licensees including BC International (men/women’s nightwear, 7+ underwear), Staples Disposables (tissue, kitchen towels, wet wipes), with more to be announced. Exiting licensees include Rainbow Designs (Snoopy anniversary notebook, mug and collectible Snoopy, gifts).
STONE SOUP
Nickelodeon, which launched its first set of iPhone apps in February of this year, conducted a comprehensive study about how kids and families use the iPhone and iPod Touch, surveying 500 parents who have the devices in their homes. The study found that kids not only play games on their parents’ devices but that they’re also getting their own units to play with and that parents are cool with this.
A majority of parents surveyed consider the iPhone/iTouch to be appropriate for use by children under the age of 18. Perceived appropriateness skews older with the ages of 12+ where at least 50% of parents would begin to consider either device most appropriate to use
- In comparing the two devices (iPhone vs. iTouch), the iTouch is considered more child-friendly (no usage charges to worry about)
- Music, games, photos, and phone apps (iPhone only) are considered the most appropriate for children
- Distraction (keeps the kids occupied), entertainment and education are the top benefits parents consider when allowing or thinking about allowing usage
- Kids of all ages prefer games that have objectives scores and timers are viewed as important and add excitement
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Sulake, the parent company of the teen-targeted virtual world Habbo ( www.habbo.com ), appoints Mika Salmi as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Most recently, Salmi served as President/Global Digital Media, MTV Networks/Viacom and founded the online entertainment company Atom Entertainment, which was acquired by Viacom in 2006. Additionally, Salmi is credited with discovering/signing Nine Inch Nails. He also toiled for EMI Music, Sony Music and RealNetworks.
