Nominations for the 71st annual Primetime Emmy Awards were revealed live online, with multiple nods going to NBC’s This Is Us, Showtime’s Escape at Dannemora, Netflix’s When They See Us and HBO’s Veep.
HBO led the race with 137 Emmy nominations (29 more than last year), an all-time high for any network. Netflix came in second with 117 nominations (an increase of five from 2018). NBC came in a distant third with 58 nominations (down 20), with Amazon Prime Video in fourth with 47 (up 25). With 32 nominations alone, Game of Thrones set another record, the most for any program in a single season. Seven of the 12 slots in supporting categories landed with Thrones actors. Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel earned 20; HBO’s Chernobyl, 19.
Some surprising omissions: Big Bang Theory’s final season saw no Outstanding Comedy nomination, and none for past winner Jim Parsons. Julia Roberts was ignored for Amazon’s Homecoming. Hulu’s Catch-22 had George Clooney as an EP and a supporting star and saw nothing. And the breakout hit of last summer, The Masked Singer, was left out of the competition series category.
In addition, there was no mention of a host for the ceremony, which will air live on Fox on September 22, with Creative Arts categories set for separate ceremonies on September 14 and 15.
