Netflix is building on an already-substantial investment in children’s programming. First off, the streaming giant says it will renew its series Kong: King of the Apes for a second season, which will premiere next year. Netflix will also debut several new series: One based on the Llama Llama children’s books by Anna Dewdney, one based on the Spy Kids film franchise, one based on the Hilda graphic novels by Luke Pearson, one based on the Skylanders video game franchise, and one based on the 2002 film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. The newly announced content will debut between this year and 2018. Something that’s been clear for a while, but bears repeating: Netflix is out to create a highly varied library of content for a widely diverse array of demographics – and offering a slew of children’s content is crucial to that effort.
Speaking of which, Netflix isn’t the only streamer diving into kids’ content. The Hulu Kids library is adding a huge new haul of kid- and family-friendly content from Disney. Hulu nabbed over 500 TV episodes from Disney Channel, Disney XD, and Disney Junior. And Hulu’s new licensing agreement with Disney-ABC Television Group will give the service the rights to over 20 original films, and seven series. Those include all prior episodes of the Disney Channel’s K.C. Undercover, Disney Junior’s Sheriff Callie’s Wild West, and Disney XD’s Gravity Falls.
