The FIFA Council delivered a unanimous decision to embrace China PR as the host of the first edition of the new, expanded FIFA Club World Cup. The tournament will be played between June and July 2021 with the final list of venues set to be decided by FIFA and the Chinese FA. Qatar will host the remaining two editions of the tournament’s current format, with the 2019 competition getting under way on December 11. Other announcements included Indonesia serving as host of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2021, Peru as host of the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2021, and Russia as host of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2021.
“It is a historic decision for football,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino said about the decision to go to China, per CNN. “The new [tournament] will be a competition which anyone who loves football is looking forward to. It is the first real and true Club World Cup where the best clubs will compete.”
