Before last night’s Emmys, co-host Michael Che promised, “We’re gonna come out on the wrong side of history for sure. We’re aiming toward it.” So did Che and his SNL Weekend Update co-anchor Colin Jost, in a broadcast overseen by SNL creator and exec producer Lorne Michaels, shake it up?
After a “we solved it” diversity skit led by SNL’s Kate McKinnon and Kenan Thompson, Che and Jost dove into politics. Jost recalled that when the Emmys were

first held back in 1949, “Things were very different back then. Gas was 17 cents a gallon, a new home cost $7,000, and we all agreed that Nazis were bad.” Diversity was a theme throughout the night, in ways obvious (“I’m only rooting for the black people,” said presenter Tracy Morgan) and subtle (“I don’t even believe in God, but I’m going to thank Her tonight,” said Thandie Newton in her thank you speech). The co-hosts had lots of help from SNL performers past and present, and if you love SNL, you probably loved it. If not, it was a lot of SNL.

Sometimes it was just about the joy of winning. An exuberant Henry Winkler was a crowd pleaser as the first winner of the night for supporting actor in a comedy. “I only have 37 seconds, I wrote this 43 years ago…Kids, you can go to bed now, Daddy won!” said a visibly moved Fonz…. Winning back-to-back writing and directing awards for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Amy Sherman-Palladino was quick to credit, “The crew, the crew, the crew!” as well as performers. “My actors, God love you, you don’t flinch when I say it’s a six-page one,” said Sherman-Palladino….Betty White was touched by a standing ovation. “It’s incredible that you can stay in a career this long and they still put

up with you,” said White….Taking prom-posals to the next level in a moment that set Twitter alight, Glenn Weiss, winner of the directing Emmy for the Oscars, used his moment onstage to propose. “Do you know why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend?” Weiss asked his girlfriend during his speech. “Because I want to call you my wife,” then knelt to present his love with his late mother’s ring. (“There are so many men who didn’t win with an engagement ring in their pocket,” said Jost afterward.)

More on-stage highlights: “Vote!” urged lead actress winner Rachel Brosnahan….“I’m going to give advice to the losers,” advised presenter Michael Douglas. “Carry that rage…know that you were cheated.”…”A limited series is when a movie star hits the limit on their credit cards, and they have to do television,” explained Jost….”Thank you to Netflix for your support of letting artists be artists,” said Jeff Daniels, who also thanked his Godless driver, wife, his horse wrangler and horse….”My son hates our show, he loves Paw Patrol,” said John Oliver. “And our show is the opposite of Paw Patrol.”…”It looks much smaller on television,” said a gasping Will Ferrell of his long (odd) walk to present the comedy series award to big winner of the night The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
