Tennis grabbed headlines yesterday for all the wrong reasons when Raymond Moore, CEO of Indian Wells Tennis Garden, told media that the WTA and the sport’s female pros “are very, very lucky” as the women’s game was “riding on the coattails” of the men’s successes. Among the comments was that “If I was a lady player, I’d go down every night on my knees and thank God that Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal were born, because they have carried this sport. They really have.” While Moore quickly released an apology, players and pundits unleashed a volley of criticism over the remarks, with some calling for his immediate resignation. “I just feel like in order to make a comment you have to have history and you have to have facts and you have to know things,” said Serena Williams, adding that the comments took away from the successes of players like Billie Jean King. “That is such a disservice to her and every female, not only a female athlete but every woman on this planet, that has ever tried to stand up for what they believed in and being proud to be a woman.”
