Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, October 3, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

The CW will call it quits for Kids’ WB at the end of the 2007-8 season, but not for kids Saturday morning programming.  The CW has signed a five-year deal with 4Kids Entertainment to oversee programming, marketing and ad sales for a new Saturday morning kids block, beginning with the 2008-9 season. The CW isn’t the first to subcontract it’s Saturday mornings: CBS Saturday morning kids block Kewlopolis is overseen by DIC Entertainment; NBC’s qubo block handled by ION Media Networks; and the Fox Saturday morning grid 4Kids TV, is also managed by 4Kids Entertainment, who will continue on Fox in addition to The CW next year.

Tonight’s Premieres:
ABC: Pushing Daisies at 8p
BET J Network: Tears, Shears and Beauty at 8p
PBS: Wired Science at 8p (check local PBS affiliate listings)
BBC America: Hotel Babylon at 9p
BET: American Gangster at 10p
Comedy Central: South Park at 10p and The Sarah Silverman Program at 1030p
Bravo: Better Half at 1115p
Tonight’s Finales:
G4: Code Monkeys at 9p
Bravo: Top Chef at 10p
MTV: Newport Harbor: The Real Orange County at 1030p

NBC began last week with its season premiere of Heroes averaging 14.1 million viewers and a 6.5/17 A18-49 rating.  Then Nielsen reminded everyone of its new rule, and as a result, the Saturday night airing of Heroes did two things — bulked up the Monday night Heroes average to 17 million viewers and a 7.3/17 A18-49 rating, and threw out the Saturday 8pm hour altogether.  And that helped NBC tie with ABC for the week in the demo, both coming in with a week-long average of a 3.9 rating.  At last word, Nielsen is reviewing the rule.

MTV brings a new scripted drama Kaya to its line-up starting October 22 at 1030p. This original 30m series follows a young rock star teetering on destruction because of her success and fame. The first episode and a music video performed by the fictional Crossing Coldwater rock band will be offered exclusively to Time Warner On Demand subscribers October 15. Viewers will be able to access additional footage and bonus materials through various MTV platforms including Virtual Kaya which begins on premiere night. Created by LeVine, Kaya is a joint production between MTV and Protocol Entertainment and MGM is distributing the series internationally.
Broadcast Evening News Ratings Update: Competition continues to be fierce between ABC’s World News with Charles Gibson and NBC’s Nightly News with Brian Williams. Here are the current snapshot results from the week of September 24, 2007:
ABC: 7.65 million total viewers; 1.9/8 A25-54
NBC: 7.67 million total viewers; 1.8/8 A25-54
CBS: 6.15 million total viewers; 1.5/6 A25-54
VH1‘s Sunday night finale of Rock of Love with Bret Michaels posted a 4.0 rating with A18-49, making it the second highest-rated telecast in the network’s history. The final show where the rocker chose Jess to be his mate also averaged 4.1 million A18-49 viewers and 5.4 million total viewers.
The Sunday night season #2 premiere of Showtime‘s Dexter drew in just over a million viewers.  That’ll make Dexter happy on a few of fronts — it’s up considerably from its first season debut which pulled in just over 600,000 viewers; it nearly matched season one’s finale of 1.1 million viewers; and it was playing opposite the season premiere of Desperate Housewives and Cold Case on broadcast.

If this is one of your Tivo shows, you’ll need to do some adjustment – Tim Russert‘s weekend show on CNBC is moving … to MSNBC.  That’s it, just wanted you to know.

iN DEMAND Networks reupped its contract with the National Hockey League (NHL) for distribution of the NHL Center Ice digital subscription package beginning with the 2007-2008 season. The package includes approximately 1,000 out-of-market games along with new free embellishments for the viewers such as NHL Center Ice Leaguewide with rotating screens that depict live action games played around the league as well as broadband content available through The package will be offered to all eligible cable affiliates in the U.S.
IMHO:  There’s a reason the cave men are extinct.  And while carpooling in theory is a good idea, it’s not for everyone.  I’m just sayin’.

Production on ESPN’s new six-part reality series, Varsity Inc. has begun and it is tentatively scheduled to open November 29 at 11p on ESPN2, airing through December 27. The series is about the 2007 football season of the West Monroe, LA High School Rebels and how the town is caught up in football mania. Varsity Inc. is the first production from the newly established ESPN Content Development division and is produced in association with Jason Sciavicco and his company Horizon Entertainment. The series will have support from and and will re-air on ESPNU.

Variety reports Hulk Hogan will join the cast of NBC‘s newest old project – Gladiators, a remorphing of the 1980’s syndicated game series American Gladiators.  Do you get the feeling Ben Silverman is looking for all his old favorites from 20 years ago and reliving them on NBC?  What would K.I.T.T. say?

NBC‘s pilot comedy Kath and Kim has added Molly Shannon as Kath.  The role of the daughter, Kim, has not yet been cast.

Comedy Central has ordered a new comedy series from Busboy Prods called Important Things With Demitri Martin, a sketch-variety series, says Hollywood Reporter.  Executive Producing are Jon Stewart and Demitri Martin.  This is the second series from Busboy the network has picked up – the first being The Colbert Report.
Casting Call: Bravo is continuing its nationwide search for its new reality competition series Make Me A Supermodel, produced by Tiger Aspect Productions. An open casting call will happen this Saturday and next Monday in Los Angeles at Exclusive Casting Studios, 7700 Sunset Blvd, First Floor. Male and female contestants will compete for a modeling contract and a $100,000 cash prize and viewers will have the chance to vote for their favorite each week. Over the 12-week run, model wannabes will live together in NYC as they individually seek to win the competition. For more information about the series and casting call, go to Yahoo! and search for “Supermodel,” or log-onto
