10/17/07

Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, October 17, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Similar to the move by Belo made earlier this month where it decided to split its station and network group from its other assets and create two separate entities, E.W. Scripps announced yesterday it too would become two publicly traded companies.  One would focus on “creating national lifestyle brands” and include the company’s networks and internet assets, newly titled Scripps Networks Interactive, headed up by Ken Lowe and Pres/CEO.  The other, called E. W. Scripps Co., will build on its local media franchises, and include all of the newspaper and ten local TV stations, and will be overseen by Richard Boehne as Pres/CEO.  The split is expected to be completed by 2nd qtr 2008.

Negotiations between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP) took an unexpected turn – AMPTP withdrew their proposed change in the payout of residuals. The original proposal would have changed the formulas for paying residuals so writers would only receive payments after producers recouped basic costs, and item the WGA has said from the get-go is out of the question. The AMPTP is now calling for the WGA to resign one or more of its proposals. The labor agreement talks are headed into Day 11.

Broadcast Evening News Ratings Wrap-Up: Things see-sawed between ABC’s World News Tonight with Charles Gibson and NBC’s Nightly News with Brian Williams as NBC led in total viewers and ABC in the A25-54 demo. Here are the results from the week of October 8, 2007:
ABC: 7.80 million total viewers; 2.0/8 & 2.48 million viewers A25-54
NBC: 7.93 million total viewers; 1.9/8 & 2.40 million viewers A25-54
CBS: 6.10 million total viewers; 1.5/6 & 1.86 million viewers A25-54

E!’s premiere of Keeping Up with the Kardashians last Sunday (1030p) attracted more than 1 million total viewers and posted a 0.6 rating among A18-49 and a 1.4 rating with W18-34.

The season finale of MTV’s Life of Ryan Monday night (1030p) netted a 2.48 rating among P12-34 and a 6.84 rating with W18-24. Season two of the series returns early next year.

Retirement Living TV premieres a new 30-minute show this month geared to help the 55+ crowd figure out new technologies. Each episode will focus on one aspect of life where technological devices can enhance older Americans’ quality of life. Retired and Wired premieres October 25 at 2 pm ET.

Generally, we don’t delve into politics in this daily, but we couldn’t ignore Stephen Colbert throwing his hat into the ring and officially announcing his candidacy for President of the United States.  Colbert appeared on The Daily Show and suggested he might consider considering a run for the highest office in the land, but then said he would make his official announcement on a “more prestigious show.”  Then appearing on his own show, he made the big announcement amid a waterfall of red, white and blue balloons.  He went on to say he plans to file and run in South Carolina, his home state, and only in South Carolina, and will file for both the Republican and Democratic parties.

~  PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Michael Hoff Productions, Inc. signed two new production deals, one with WE tv for Chain Gang Girls and another with The Weather Channel for Climate Quiz with Bill Nye. Chain Gang Girls is a two-hour documentary scheduled to air first quarter 2008 about the lives of incarcerated women shackled and working together on a prison chain gang. Climate Quiz is a series of interstitials slated to air this fourth quarter featuring Bill Nye, the “Science Guy” as he asks climate-related questions on the streets of New York and L.A.

Fox has ordered up an additional cycle of Kitchen Nightmares, giving it a 10 episode order for next year, reports Variety.  Also at Fox – production on the new series Amsterdam has been put on hold indefinitely.  The show currently has seven episodes completed, and will take a step back to assess before continuing.

Star Wars the TV show? George Lucas told the LA Times yesterday he was working on a Star War spin-off, live action series for television that does not include Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader, and in fact is more about robots than familiar characters. This is not to be confused with the Lucas’ other TV project, an animated series called Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

And returning to TV – Damon Wayans as executive producer, writer and star in an untitled project for which ABC has ordered a script.  Wayans will once again team with Don Reo, his partner in My Wife & Kids, also for ABC.  The storyline in the new project focuses on a recent widowed dad and the 19 year old step son he never knew.

An uncasting announcement – original cast member Jorja Fox is leaving CSI to pursue other opportunities.  Her last episode will air in November.

Debra Messing will reprise her role as The Starter Wife in the 10-episode USA Network series based on the original miniseries which ran last summer, and for which she received an Emmy nomination.  The best news is also returning are Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriott, the writing team from the miniseries, who will also exec produce the series.  The series is from Universal Media Studios, 3 Arts Entertainment and McGibbon/Parriott Prods, and is based on the novel by Gigi Levangie Grazer.

Casting Call Clarification: Dance Nation, the new dance competition show, will give the winner up to $100,000 (in cash and prizes).

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

CBS Corporation signed a new employment pact with President/CEO, Leslie Moonves that supersedes his previous contract and extends his position with the company through September 30, 2011. The terms of the deal include a $3.5 million salary per year and an annual performance-based bonus. In addition, he will receive equity-based compensation that ties the value of the agreement to the performance of the company’s stock. The agreement further includes a one-time option to buy five million shares of CBS Class B Common Stock, and additional annual restricted stock units during the contract period with a value of $7.6 million per year. CBS has also provided incentives for Leslie to remain with the company through the end of his employment term.

NBC Universal recruited Steve Mandala, SVP/Sales at Telemundo for the new position as EVP/Cable Ad Sales, NBCU. Steve will now oversee sales and marketing activities for the NBCU entertainment networks USA Network, SCI FI Channel, Bravo, Chiller, Sleuth and Uni HD. He will continue to lead sales efforts at Telemundo until his successor is named. Steve will report to Mike Pilot, President/NBCU Sales and Marketing.

Mike Greco joins Lifetime Networks as EVP/Research, effective immediately. Previously, Mike was SVP/Research at MTV and will succeed Tim Brooks at Lifetime who earlier this year announced his retirement plans. Based in New York, Mike will be in charge of all research pertaining to Lifetime Television, Lifetime Movie Network and Lifetime Real Women programming in addition to Lifetime Digital, Advertising and Affiliate Sales.

fuse advanced Andy Meyer to VP/Development and Original Series to lead all original series and supervise the development and production of long-form programming. In addition, the network’s development department upped Nicole De Fusco to Director and hired Erika Palumbo as Manager.

News Corporation upped Gary Ginsberg to EVP/Global Marketing and Corporate Affairs, reporting to Rupert Murdoch, Peter Chernin and David DeVoe, CFO.  Gary will continue to oversee the company’s corporate affairs, while taking on the new job duties managing marketing initiatives internationally.
