Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Friday, September 12, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

With the feature film adaptation of Sid and Marty Krofft’s Land of the Lost not set for release until June 5, 2009, Universal has gone ahead and inked a deal for a movie based on another of the Krofft’s kid’s series, Sigmund the Sea Monster, per Variety.  With a script by Dana Gould (writer/producer The Simpsons), the Sigmund the Sea Monster movie will be produced by the brother’s Krofft with Jimmy Miller and his production company Mosaic.  Universal and Mosaic are also behind the Land of the Lost movie starring Will Ferrell.  Another of the Krofft’s series, H.R. Puf’n’stuf, is in the works at Sony, according to the report. … On a very weird beach around Dead Man’s Point, where there are haunted sea caves they say and strange sea monsters have been sighted there. If you’re traveling in the area Beware! Beware, Beware! Beware!

HarperCollins Publishers inks a young adult fiction series deal with Lauren Conrad, star of MTV’s reality series The Hills.  The three-book series, entitled L.A. Candy, follows an average teen who moves to LA and becomes a reality TV star and fashion designer, not to mention famous pals, romance and that “everyone wants something from her.”  Really it is a fiction series.


Warner Bros. Pictures and Imax Corporation will release Under the Sea 3D, a new original Imax 3D, on February 13, 2009.  The movie follows the Imax release, Deep Sea 3D (rated G, 2006), both of which were shot by cinematographer/director Howard Hall.

Sorpresa, the Spanish-language network for K2-17, becomes available to more viewers as it debuts in Brookline and Boston, Massachusetts as part of Comcast’s Canales Selecto digital package.

Seventeen songs from Disney Channel’s TV movie, Camp Rock, have been recorded in various languages by recording artists from around the world, and the music videos for those songs will debut on 27 Disney Channels leading up to the original TV movie’s launch in Europe and Asia this month.  Included among those songs is a Spanish-language version of This is Me, recorded by the movie’s star Demi Lovato, will bow on Disney Channel US.

Bejuba Entertainment inks a broadcast deal with Nickelodeon for its animated comedy Ricky Sprocket  Showbiz Boy (26×22 or 52×11), which will take the property to 29 new territories.  Under the new agreement Ricky Sprocket  Showbiz Boy will be seen on Nickelodeon channels in Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Montenegro, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Hungary, Malta, Nigeria, Turkey, Portugal, Poland, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Israel and Africa.  Ricky Sprocket is co-produced by Studio B Productions and Snowden animation in association with Bejuba Entertainment.  In addition to a recent deal with France 5, the series is seen on Nicktoons Network (US), Teletoon (Canada), Nickelodeon (UK, Australia, Latin America, Germany, Italy, France, Spain and Scandinavia)

Decode Enterprises will feature a range of kid-targeted programming at Mipcom 2008 next month.

  • For the preschool audience: The animated series Martha Speaks (40×30), from Studio B Productions and WGBH Boston; Super Why! from Out of the Blue Enterprises in conjunction with Decode Entertainment; and from Halifax Film the CG animated series Bo On the Go! (40×22); puppet series Mighty Jungle (26×11); and Animal-Mechanicals (40×11), the latter two both commissioned by CBC (Canada)
  • For older kids: The 3D series Chop Socky Chooks (26×22), a co-production between Decode Entertainment and Aardman Animation; Kid vs Kat (52×11, 26×22) – from Studio B in association with YTV and Jetix Europe; Clang Invasion (26×22, 52×11), the K8-12 animated series from Decode Entertainment, Scrawl Studios and Agogo Entertainment in conjunction with Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA); the teen-targeted live action series Latest Buzz (65×22) commissioned by Family Channel (Canada) and produced by Decode.

VIZ Media’s VIZKids imprint is set to release the new Pokemon DVDs, Pokemon: Diamond and Pearl Box Sets Vols. 1-2, Pokemon Battle Frontier Box Sets Vols. 1-2, and Pokemon All Stars Vols. 11-12, on September 16, 2008.

The Chaotic Trading Card Game expands with the release of the M’arrillian Invasion starter decks and M’arrillian Invasion: Beyond the Doors booster packs.  The release of the new decks/packs coincides with the debut of the improved game and website  This all ties in, of course, with the debut of the new Chaotic: M’arrillian Invasion animated series on 4KidsTV (Fox) and TheCW4Kids (The CW).


Mattel announces a reorganization of its Barbie brand various lines of business and creative groups into one global brand management team.  Richard Dickson is named to head the new team as GM and SVP/Barbie.  The newly united Barbie team is charged with bringing together the brand’s operations in key customer segments (e.g. toy and licensing) to build new opportunities for growth.  For the last 8+ years Dickson has toiled in different leadership roles at Mattel.  Stephanie Cota will now serve in the new post, SVP/Marketing, Barbie Brand.  While overseeing the global direction of the brand, Cota also heads the US licensing division as well as the toy marketing departments.  Evelyn Viohl is named SVP/Design, Barbie Brand.  Viohl is responsible for product design and execution for all Barbie-branded product worldwide, including licensing, packaging, and product style guides.
