CBS has caught Beatle fever. Marking the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four’s groundbreaking first performance on The Ed Sullivan Show, the net will present The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to the Beatles. The two-hour special, to include current artists covering Beatles tunes, tapes January 27, the day after CBS’s Grammy broadcast, and airs on the same date and time, February 9 at 8p, and on the same network, as the group’s U.S. debut.

~ IN THE NEWS ~

NBC is bringing back Last Comic Standing for a summer 2014 run. Wanda Sykes will executive produce with returning exec producer Page Hurwitz for the show’s eighth season; season seven aired in 2010.

American Express has struck a first-of-its-kind deal with Fox to sponsor clips of its shows via Twitter Amplify. Promotional clips that will be amplified on the microblogging site include Glee, New Girl, Bones, The Mindy Project and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The arrangement allows Amex “to be able to partake in the conversation quickly enough to be relevant and to be topical,” Jill Toscano, the company’s VP of media, told Variety.

Five expert survivalists match wits in Dude, You’re Screwed. Each is dropped in a harsh environment and must make it back to civilization within 100 hours in the seven-part series from High Noon Entertainment, premiering on Discovery Channel Sunday, December 8 at 10p, and on Animal Planet in early 2014.

The same week it unveiled a makeover, including increased emphasis on current weather conditions, The Weather Channel announced the hire of Jennifer Delgado as an on-camera meteorologist. Delgado, who joins Weather from CNN, debuts from the net’s Atlanta headquarters on Monday, November 18.

Discovery tapped into its library footage to create Brutally Honest Abe, launched Thursday on its TestTube network. CGI Abraham Lincoln delivers his opinions on everything from the first president (“George Washington was a big jerk”) to Hunger Games at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUfk8fnepfs.

Sesame Workshop and Oznoz Video will offer multi-lingual versions of Sesame offerings online. Oznoz (tagline: “Stuff for bilingual kids”) will carry content in Chinese, Spanish, French, Japanese, Persian and Arabic.

~ COMING UP ~

Lifetime Original Movie Flowers in the Attic, based on the controversial 1979 bestseller about an abused brother and sister who develop a romantic relationship, will premiere Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 8p. Cast includes Heather Graham and Ellen Burstyn.

The Girl with Half a Face follows the story of a bullied, disfigured teenager who posted a video online about her condition, and found a doctor willing to operate on a massive tumor on her face. Discovery Fit & Health is airing the doc Wednesday, December 18 at 10p, and partnering with DoSomething.org to spread the anti-bullying message.

Reelzchannel continues its Kennedy coverage with JFK: For the Record, featuring an interview with U.S. District Court Judge John R. Tunheim, chair of  the Assassination Records Review Board. Tunheim describes the disappearance of documents and the ARRB’s findings about the slain President’s autopsy in the half-hour special, airing Saturday, November 16 at 9p.

Former Dancing with the Stars dance pro and bad boy Maksim Chmerkovskiy, who announced his departure from the show in February, is returning as a guest judge on Monday, November 18. Competition series airs at 8p on ABC.

Sheryl Crow is set to perform with Darius Rucker at the American Country Awards. The two-hour show airs live from Las Vegas on Fox, Tuesday, November 10 at 8p.

TVGN examines the “rise, fall and re-birth” of daytime serials in Who Shot the Daytime Soap? The one-hour special, with clips from soap legends including (of course!) Susan Lucci, airs Monday, December 16 at 8p.

~ CASTING ~

Jack Black and Tim Robbins will star in HBO pilot, The Brink. The dark comedy, from executive producers Jerry Weintraub, Jay Roach and Roberto Benabin, focuses on three men navigating a geopolitical crisis.

~ RETURNING SERIES ~

Truckers bid against each other to take on tricky moving assignments in Shipping Wars, returning to A&E for season five. This time around, challenges include a load of live bugs and a folk rock band’s ‘chicken car.” Season five of the Megalomedia production begins with back-to-back eps on Tuesday, December 3 at 10p.

AMC has renewed Hell on Wheels for a fourth season, bumping the order from 10 episodes to 13. Buoyed by a move to Saturday night from Sunday in its third season, the Western drama from Endemol and Entertainment One delivered an average audience of 3.3 million viewers Live+3.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Washington FilmWorks, a non-profit created to encourage film and TV production in the state, struck a deal for China’s DMG Entertainment to shoot a Chinese-language drama in Seattle. The show, about Chinese nationals adjusting to life in America, will air on CCTV a broadcaster reaching over 1.2 billion people.

NBC will co-produce 12 episodes of Andrea Martin comedy Working with the Engels with Canada’s Global TV, to air on NBC. The Halfire-CORE Entertainment/Shaw Media project is the first U.S./Canada collaboration that’s gone to series.

~ RATINGS ~

Pitching in for CBS‘s demo win Wednesday night, Criminal Minds jumped four tenths of a point week to week, to 2.7/8 in A18-49. ABC‘s Super Fun Night, following an original Modern Family, also saw a three tenths boost in the demo, to 2.0/6 from its last airing.

The CW is on a roll. After its best Tuesday night in four years, the net saw its strongest performance in the Wednesday 8-9p time period in M18-34 since 2008 with Arrow, which also had a season high in A18-49 (1.2/3).

Things are looking up for Fox‘s The X Factor. The struggling singing competition, which hit a record low last week, enjoyed a two-tenths ratings lift, to 1.7/5 in A18-49.

Investigation Discovery had its best night ever for P2+ (1.14 million) and HH (966,000) on Tuesday, ranking number eight in ad-supported cable for W25-54 (334,000). Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda delivered 1.3 million P2+ at 9p, followed by the premiere of A Crime to Remember, with 1.2 million P2+.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis: CBS won the night among A18-49 viewers with 2.4/7, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. A 2.5/7 in the demo for CBS’s Survivor beat the 2.1/6 average for ABC comedies The Middle and Back in the Game to take the 8p hour, though Middle tied Survivor in the 8-8:30p slot. A 2.9/9 average for Modern Family and Super Fan Night gave ABC the 9p hour vs. 2.7/8 for CBS’s Criminal Minds, which led from 9:30-10p. CBS’s CSI drew 1.9/6 to win at 10p, followed by ABC’s Nashville (1.5/5)

Lara Spotts, Vice President of Development at Bravo, will head the script and non-scripted team at Bravo, replacing Andy Cohen

Mickey Carter has been named Senior Vice President of Television Networks Distribution at CBS Corp. Carter recently served as Vice President of National Accounts at Fox News.

Oxygen Media promoted Brie Miranda Bryant to Vice President, Development and Production, Original Programming. Bryant had been Senior Director of Development and Production.

Live Well Network appointed Judy Mitchell to their Affiliate Marketing and Distribution team. Mitchell had been Vice President, Affiliate Marketing & Cooperative Advertising at Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution.

 ~ IN MEMORIAM ~

Veteran casting director Marvin Paige died on November 13 from injuries he suffered in a car crash last month. He was in his 80s. In addition to casting such films as Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Take the Money and Run, Paige worked for many years on the soap opera General Hospital, as well as series like Lassie and Charlie’s Angels.
