Fall Preview 2015

FALL PREVIEW 2015

tv fall preview

As the broadcast networks prepare for the 2015-2016 season, they continue to face encroachment from across the entertainment landscape. But they’re prepared, with programming blueprints that include a moderate serving of new approaches with an extensive renovation, and reimagining, of popular, proven, and enduring brands.

It’s easier to bring in audiences if shows are based on “an existing franchise or recognizable name,” says Bill Carroll, SVP, Director of Content Strategy, Katz Television Group. “That doesn’t guarantee success but it does help with sampling.”

“A rebirth or reinvention of a lot of familiar favorites” is indeed a trend this coming season, agrees Andy Kubitz, EVP, ABC Entertainment, Program Planning & Scheduling.

For example, among the shows generating buzz are CBS’s Supergirl, NBC’s Heroes Reborn, and ABC’s The Muppets (“the funniest comedy pilot I saw,” says Eric Deggans, television critic for NPR).

Carroll also points out that “it’s not unusual for the broadcast networks [to] follow what the rest of the entertainment is doing,” i.e. the film industry’s reliance on proven franchises. “When you look at the new shows that are coming, most of them are connected to some kind of brand that the audience is already familiar with,” says Deggans.

But franchises and familiar faces aren’t the only tools broadcast nets are using to grab viewers. Aware that their competitors are not only their counterparts but “all the other ways viewers are able to watch programming,” Carroll says, they’re also recognizing that they need to play more to their strengths, particularly event programming, the definition of which is broadening and evolving.

For example, “I have to believe that the return of Empire will be an event, and NBC is hoping that the new Neil Patrick Harris show [Best Time Ever With Neil Patrick Harris] will be an event,” Carroll said.

For Harris, the fact that it’s shot live adds to its event status, says Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment. “In a television landscape where there is so much delayed viewing, we feel live viewing creates an immediate-watch opportunity, especially due to spoilers on social media and the ‘anything can happen’ element of the show.”

On the genre front, there’s a strong sitcom presence across all broadcast networks for 2015-2016, with all hoping to find the next long-term, lucrative hit. Most of the successful sitcoms are already in syndication, and “the sitcom pipeline is just dripping,” in need of replenishment, says, Carroll. “Sitcoms are the building blocks, they are the annuities, in the sense that they can live forever.”

Another trend “a bit more prevalent this year with the networks is to build on what worked last year,” says Kubitz. “At ABC we are building on our successful comedies with the addition of Dr. Ken and The Muppets, and building our diversity efforts with both of those shows and our new drama Quantico.”

Other examples include NBC building on The Blacklist with Blind Spot, Fox building on Empire with Rosewood, and The CW building on Jane the Virgin with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

In the big picture, streaming and other alternative content options continue to grow exponentially, and now these are the “way people are talking about television, and certainly what’s driving the conversation,” says Jim McKairnes, former television executive and recent Verizon Chair at Temple University’s School of Media and Communication.

At the same time, “distinctions between television companies and streaming companies miss the point,” Nina Tassler, Chairman, CBS Entertainment, said at last month’s TCA tour. “The truth is we’re all part of one big content universe. We’re all content creators, and distributors, buyers, and sellers.”

“With so much competition, you have to allow audiences to find a show,” says Salke.  “You have to interpret much more data than ever before in determining how a series is performing – DVR viewing, online, VOD. The live and same-day ratings are just one part of a bigger equation and analysis.”

Broadcast television “is still the big tent that people go through,” says McKairnes, but “we live in a world of I want what I want when I want it.”

So, what do viewers want and what will they get from broadcast television? They’ll have plenty to choose from this season. Submitted for your approval, a quick look at the broadcast network’s 2015-2016 season…
