When John Oliver talked, people listened. And posted. After HBO‘s Last Week Tonight host (and popular Daily Show sub) asked viewers to take advantage of the FCC’s open comment period to weigh in on the net neutrality debate, or as Oliver put it, "channel that anger… you normally reserve for unforgivable attacks on actresses you seem to think have put on weight," response was apparently so great it crashed the FCC’s system. "We’ve been experiencing technical difficulties with our comment system due to heavy traffic," posted the FCC on Twitter.

IN THE NEWS

At a screening for Sleepy Hollow held at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Fox announced the show’s season two premiere date: Monday, September 22 at 9p.

In a company memo on Monday, Turner CEO John Martin described the "Turner 2020" initiative, calling for an assessment of every part of the company. "Some of our largest, most profitable and highest-profile networks have experienced ratings headwinds," said Martin. "Their ratings performance has not kept pace with the competition, or just as important, our own high expectations." Part of the solution: "We need to shift resources in some instances to fund and fuel our highest priorities," said Martin. "This may mean staff changes. In fact, I’ll be surprised if it doesn’t."

A new trailer for Rising Star walks viewers through how the audience will determine the winners (and losers) of the reality competition in real time. Host Josh Groban and music experts Ludacris, Kesha and Brad Paisley explain how it works – including the chance viewers to see their faces appear on the show’s video wall. ABC show launches Sunday, June 22 at 9p.

Newsmakers added to three-night Nat Geo event The 90s: The Last Great Decade? include O.J. Simpson prosecutor Christopher Darden, Monica Lewinsky and Richard Dean, who saved three people from the Oklahoma City bombing. Series, hosted by Rob Lowe, premieres Sunday, July 6 at 9p.

Sony Pictures Television announced an agreement with Rentrak for measurement from its national, local and national syndication services. "We were looking for more information about how our programs are performing in local markets and the ability to give deeper information to our station and advertising clients," said SPT’s president of ad sales, strategy & research Amy Carney. "Having the insight at a national level from set-top box data gives us stable measurement of our programming."

Clyde Phillips (Nurse Jackie, Dexter) will receive The Banff World Media Festival’s 2014 Showrunner of the Year Award, a distinction granted to a television executive "whose creative vision exhibits ingenuity in development and production." Festival is held from June 8-11.

TV Land‘s Jennifer Falls premieres tonight at 10:30p, starring Jaime Pressly as a former high-powered exec forced to move back in with her mother (Jessica Walter) and take a job in a bar owned by her brother (played by Pressly’s former My Name Is Earl castmate, Ethan Suplee).

BRANDS & ADVERTISING

A Nielsen study commissioned by family-friendly UP indicated that the trust placed in family-friendly nets plays a key role in ad perception and receptivity. Compared to ads in a non-family friendly environment, ads on family-friendly nets were considered more trustworthy by 53 percent, and viewers claimed they were 44 percent more likely to buy advertised services and products. UP had the highest "Ad Transference Index," followed by OWN. "From a big-picture standpoint, it validates that advertising in a family-friendly programming environment leads to increased purchase intent by consumers," Ron Plante, SVP, research tells Cynopsis, "and it quantifies the number of viewers who seek family-friendly programming as a whopping 42 million."
