Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 8, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Google‘s next move may be a set-top TV device, called Android TV. The Verge reports Google is planning to compete with Roku and Amazon‘s Fire TV set-top devices in more head-to-head fashion than its beloved $35 dongle, Chromecast. Android TV will be geared to content recommendations outside of the usual click-through-app interface experience that most set-top boxes utilize now. Google has not commented on the device.
Xbox Entertainment Studios is wading into Netflix and Amazon’s original series territory, rolling out two more series later this year in addition to sci-fi entries Humans and Halo. Seth Green (behind Adult Swim’s Robot Chicken) is producing a stop-motion animated series through his Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, and actors Michael Cera and Sarah Silverman are creating a sketch comedy show through their YouTube comedy channel Jash. Microsoft has also ordered a pilot for Fearless, an unscripted series about Australian Navy‘s Paul de Gelder. Some of the programming is expected to launch in June.
Vice and FremantleMedia are serving up a new online channel for its flagship food show Munchies. The video destination will feature original content about food and restaurants from around the world, with five series at launch: Being Frank, Munchies: Chef’s Night Out, Fresh Off The Boat, Girls Eats Food and F*ck, That’s Delicious. Vice plans to unveil more content later this month; all will be available to stream at www.munchie.tv.
AOL is renewing four original series: #CandidlyNicole, City.Ballet, Hardwired and The Future Starts Here. The first seasons of the series generated 75 million views total since they premiered at the Digital New Fronts a year ago. "The success these series have seen is on par with top tier cable programs reaching sizable audiences who are highly engaged, establishing them as a viable alternative to place [advertising] dollars," AOL’s SVP of Global Video sales Charles Gabriel said. The series are available across AOL platforms and partners (#CandidlyNicole is also available through VH1). AOL will formally present the entire slate at its April 29th NewFront event.
The MIP Digital Fronts kicked off yesterday in Cannes, France yesterday. For the first international digital content marketplace for distribution, production and acquisition of high quality original content produced for the web, MIP snagged Comedy Gives Back‘s CEO, Amber J. Lawson as host. Lawson shared with Cynopsis what she predicts will be the major trends during this week’s events:
01) Rolling up of the multi-channel networks into traditional broadcasters, ala Disney‘s Maker Studios acquisition and AwesomenessTV‘s purchase of Big Frame.
02) The democratization of content: Think House of Cards or the Amazon audience–driven pilot and series process.
03) New YouTubers: The first generation of YT stars are "all grown up," with Shay Carl (1,201,445 subs) slowing down from production, Ray William Johnson (10,798,322 subs) stopping his hit show Equals Three and Shane Dawson (5,734,661 subs) moving into TV and film. Who are the new wave of ‘tubers?
04) The rise of the mega channel: Just look at PewDiePie, Smosh and Fine Brothers.
05) Brands as content creators: The space has finally come full circle, and brands are reasserting themselves as content creators.

"Imagine Communications is strategically positioned to transform the media and entertainment industry through innovations in IP, software-defined workflows and virtualization," Digital Rapids CEO and President Brick Eksten said.

It was True Detective all over again for HBO Go on Sunday night, as the streaming service crashed during the Game of Thrones premiere. "Looks like there’s trouble in the realm. Apologies for the inconvenience," tweeted @HBOGO.
The second season of Ricky Gervais‘ original series Derek will premiere May 30 on Netflix. The new season of the bittersweet-comedy about a retirement home worker will include six new episodes.
WWE Network has already reached 667,287 paying subs since first going all-digital in February. AdAge reports the company expects to hit one million users by the end of the year. The web-streaming (and temporarily ad free) channel costs $9.99 a month, with a six-month commitment requirement.

British TV streaming site Acorn TV is adding seven new titles to its library this month: Wild At Heart, Jack Taylor, Line of Duty, Time Team, Land Girls, The Brief and LoveJoy. The series and newest episodes are available to view at www.acorn.tv and on its Roku channel.
Animal Planet‘s live web cam series Animal Planet L!VE has two new members: the Bunny Cam and the Hedgehog Cam. The one-year-old digital destination has garnered more than 16 million streams and two million hours viewed at APL.tv and on its Roku, Samsung and Xbox apps.
Action sports channel GoPro officially launched on Xbox 360 yesterday, with plans to debut on the Xbox One this summer. GoPro exclusively released content for Xbox Live Gold Subscribers, along with the ability for viewers to purchase accessories from the videos through the console’s controller.
MediaMath is counting Yahoo, Microsoft, iSocket, Shiny Ads and Yieldex as its first tech partners for its TerminalOne Marketing Operating System platform. Buyers can now execute deals with sites like Yahoo, MSN, Conde Nast, Forbes and USA Today.
