Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 7, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Wizard Hat Productions is developing a new Boy 6-11 targeted animated series Wiley & Grampa’s Creature Features, which is based on Kirk Scroggs’ book series of the same name. The 11-minute episodes follow 10-year-old Wiley, a master zombie fighter and dangerous amateur chemist, and his Grampa as they save the folks of Gingham County from all forms of creatures, monsters and terrible cafeteria food.
This week marks the launch of Teletoon Canada‘s new refreshed branding along with its fall programming lineup for its English and French daytime programming. The network’s refresh, which includes a new logo, is a unified reflection of its tagline, Teletoon: It’s Unreal, its “brand essence”: Anything is possible, along with the unexpected, funny, and playful nature of its kid viewers. The network’s new logo, which can be seen on air and online, remains yellow, but will now be able to take on different shapes, textures, and materials, and characteristics and featuring new animations and effects. In support of the brand refresh, Teletoon will feature its new look at various places beginning with Teletoon-branded, Unreal Ice Cream Truck, that is making stops around Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area.
Target Entertainment acquires the worldwide distribution rights to Monster Animation‘s new 2D animated preschool series Punky (20×7), which it will debut at MipJunior next month in Cannes. Created by Lindsay J. Sedgwick and penned by Andrew Brenner (creator/writer Humf), Punky revolves around a regular little girl, who is a little mischievous and happens to have Down Syndrome. Target will donate half of the sales commissions to Down Syndrome Education International, which focuses its energies on inclusion at schools for all kids with Down Syndrome. Target Entertainment is a division of The Metrodome Group.
Guru Studio inks a multi-territory deal for its preschool series Justin Time (26×11) with Disney for Disney Junior channels in Australia, New Zealand, Germany and Italy. The series will launch in Italy and Germany this fall, and debuted earlier this summer in Australia and New Zealand. Other broadcasters introducing the series next year are Discovery Kids Latin America, Discovery Familia in the US and YFE Finland. A second season of Justin Time ( www.justintime.net ) is currently in production and will bring the series up to 52×11 by 2012. Created and developed by Brandon Scott, Frank Falcone and Mary Bredin, Justin Time is produced by Guru Studios (The Backyardigans, Guess with Jess, The New Adventures of Badou). Guru Studios is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
France-based PGS Entertainment finalizes a number of new sales for the animated series I.N.K. Invisible Network of Kids, which is produced by Samka Productions in partnership with France Televisions (France), per Variety. Broadcasters picking up the series include MBC3 (Middle East), ATV’s Minika (Turkey), TG4 (Ireland) and RTK (Kosovo). The series was previously acquired by Super RTL and Disney in Germany, ABC (Australia), POP (UK), Nickelodeon in Benelux, Scandinavia and Italy, MTV3 (Finland), SIC (Portugal), RTBF (Belgium), NOGA (Israel), and MNet (South Africa).

HarperCollins grants Moxie & Company the merchandise and licensing rights for Splat the Cat, the star of the eponymous picture book series by writer/illustrator Rob Scotton. The first Splat the Cat book released in July 2008, and eight new titles in various formats are released each year. Moxie plans to sign deals for Splat for a range of preschool/family aimed products including toys, games, apparel and accessories, activity kits, paper/party goods and promotions, which is set to launch beginning 2012. Moxie represents a number of books including Nancy Drew, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, and Bear.
HIT Entertainment and Haven Licensing name Big Balloon as the Australian toy licensee for the preschool brands Fireman Sam and Bob the Builder. Under the deal Big Balloon will distribute Character Options’ line of Fireman Sam and new Bob the Builder products locally. The new Fireman Sam toy line will feature playsets, vehicles and figurines and is launching into Toys ‘R’ Us stores this week followed by Big W in October. The new Bob the Builder toy line will be available from January 1, 2012. Both the new CG animated Fireman Sam series and the CGI Bob the Builder Series are currently airing on ABC for Kids (Australia).
P2 Games releases its new Postman Pat Special Delivery Service App for iPad/iPhone/iPod touch in the UK. The new Postman Pat app features eight interactive games (and a bonus game) that underline early-learning skills. The app’s release coincides with Postman Pat’s 30th birthday.
The new Super Hero Squad Online, a free massively multiplayer online game starring the Marvel characters is now live at www.herup.com . Each day offers new missions where players help Super Hero Squad save Super Hero City, along the way unlocking a range of trophies, items and abilities. Players can also take part in the Super Hero Squad Online’s collectible card game.
Andy P. Mooney, Chairman/Disney Consumer Products, announces his resignation from Disney Consumer Products, where he lead the Disney’s consumer products initiative including being credited with the success of the Disney Princess franchise and the creative re-launch of the Disney Store chain. In his email to Disney Consumer Products staffers Mooney explained, “After 30 years contributing to the success of two of the world’s most valuable brands in Disney and Nike, I believe this is the perfect time to take that experience into a leadership role with another organization and corporate boards.” Prior to joining Disney in 2003, Mooney toiled for some 20 years at Nike, eventually serving as CMO.
Saban Brands appoints Bill Kehoe as COO and CFO. Reporting to Elie Dekel, President, Saban Brands, Kehoe will head operations, finance, accounting, human resources and IT functions across all business, including TV production entities. Additionally, he will also actively identify and complete new acquisitions and further the company’s growth strategy and initiatives. Most recently, Kehoe was COO and CFO, The Beanstalk Group, which is an Omnicom Group agency. Saban Brands is a unit of Saban Capital Group.
Entertainment One (eOne) appoints Joss Duffield as Head/International Sales, Entertainment One Family. Based in London, Duffield will oversee international distribution of eOne’s kid’s programming slate, which includes Peppa Pig, Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom and Humf. She will report to Olivier Dumont, MD, Entertainment One Family. Duffield was previously a Director at Turner International, responsible for its TV distribution infrastructure within Turner Broadcasting.
Zodiak Rights restructures its UK consumer products group.
- Jane Kennedy is upped to Head of Sales/Consumer Products UK. Kennedy, who had been Sr. UK Licensing Manager, will report to Jennifer Lawlor, SVP/Strategy and Planning, Consumer Products UK, Zodiak Rights. She will be responsible for the UK-based consumer products sales team and will oversee the development and rollout of Zodiak Rights’ UK and international consumer products program.
- Emily French Ullah takes on the new position of Licensing Manger/Softlines EMEA, working across all UK properties. She had been Licensing Manager.
- Gaby Dior is named International Licensing Manger, Agents. She will manage Zodiak Rights (UK) agents worldwide. Reporting to Dior is Aidan Taylor-Gooby, who has been promoted to Junior Licensing Executive. He will manage agents across territories including Middle East, Asia and Israel, while also providing administrative support for the sales team.
The Riki Group, a Russian-based multiplatform animation company, names Michael Mennies as Director/International Development and Production. Mennies will work out of Riki’s US office in Philadelphia and will be responsible for transmedia development of its library of intellectual properties and identifying new concepts from both in-house and out-of-house creators. Mennies, who specializes in development, production and distribution of Russian animation in post-Soviet Russia, has worked in both the US and St. Petersburg, Russia for the CTB Film Company, and for its sister organization Melnitsa Animation Studio. He was also a partner and Director/International Productions, Aeroplane Productions in Moscow (The Fixies, Boltoonz). In the US, Mennies toiled for The Saul Zaentz Film Center and WCSC-TV, Charleston, S.C., and was the keyboardist for the group The Daves.
