Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 5, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific will launch its action/anime channel, Toonami, and its preschool channel, Cartoonito in Southeast Asia in early 2013. The Toonami and Cartoonito channels join TBS’ existing kid-centric channels Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Pogo, which are already available in the region. Toonami, which is based on the eponymous programming block on Cartoon Network US, is a boy-aimed 24-hour multiplatform, multi-language channel that will feature action-adventure programming such as Young Justice, Batman: The Brave and the Bold and Dragon Ball Z. Targeted to preschoolers, the HD Cartoonito channel’s programming lineup will include LazyTown, My Little Pony and Noddy in Toyland.

LICENSING

Jazwares inks a licensing partnership with Nickelodeon, under which it will create Nicktoons-themed articulated figures and plush. The new products are based on some of the Nickelodeon’s classic animated series, such as Rugrats, Jimmy Neutron, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Ren & Stimpy, Fairly Odd Parents, CatDog, Hey Arnold!, Danny Phantom, Rocket Power, Rocko’s Modern Life, as well as the newer series T.U.F.F. Puppy. The new line of Nicktoons toys, including 2-inch 6-pack and 4-pack figure sets and 2-inch figures, 6-inch figures and 7-inch plush items, will debut this fall 2012. This new licensing deal follows Jazwares’ 2011 release of figures and electronics based on Nickelodeon’s animated Fanboy & Chum Chum series.

MARKETING

Strawberry Shortcake gets a quick service restaurant (QSR) deal in Asia. American Greetings Properties (AGP) and MediaLink, AGP’s international licensing agent in Asia, have teamed with McDonald’s for a Strawberry Shortcake Happy Meal promotion across the region. The initial promotion is currently running Malaysia and Brunei, and will be followed, beginning this October 2012 through January 2013, by promotions at participating restaurants in Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Macau, Singapore, and Philippines. McDonald’s customers who purchase any Happy Meal will receive one of four Strawberry Shortcake toys, a Strawberry Purrfect Friend, Orange’s Fruit Mart, Raspberry’s Dress Shop, or Blueberry’s Bookshop.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The CGI animated series Canimals (44×7) premieres this week on CITV (UK), where it will air weekdays at 3:40p (repeated the following day at 11:35a). Targeted to K6-10, the Canimals is a co-production between Aardman Animations, VoozClub and BRB. Additionally, Aardman recently completed named UK toy company, Vivid, as the master toy licensee for the property for plush and collectibles in the UK and Ireland.

9 Story Entertainment completes international TV sales for the first season of the new animated preschool series Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood (40×22). Produced by 9 Story Entertainment in HD, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood has been acquired by ABC (Australia), Canal+ Family (France), Hop TV (Israel), YLE (Finland), NRK (Norway) and Zee Learn (Indian Subcontinent). Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood was developed by the Fred Rogers Company (Mister Roger’s Neighborhood), in association with Out of the Blue Enterprises (Blue’s Clues, Super Why). The Executive Producers of the series are Kevin Morrison for The Fred Rogers Company, Angela C. Santomero, cofounder of Out of the Blue, and 9 Story’s Vince Commisso. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood launched earlier this week in the US on PBS, and will debut this fall on CBC (Canada). The series has also been licensed to Luk International (Spain and Portugal).

Zodiak Kids and its subsidiary Marathon Media sign TV renewals for the sixth season of the girl-targeted animated series Totally Spies! (26×26). Commissioned by TF1 (France), the newest season of Totally Spies! has been acquired by Nickelodeon (German speaking Europe, Benelux, CE Europe, Nordics, CIS, SE Asia, and Africa) and Disney (France). The latest season of Totally Spies! is being developed with a cross-platform approach and includes a four-month promotional event at Versailles in 2013, featuring a new Versailles-themed movie, interactive app, treasure hunt. The Totally Spies Facebook RPG game will also continue with updated storylines and events. The 6th season of Totally Spies!, which will bring the property to a total of 156 episodes, will launch at Mipcom Junior next month. Totally Spies! is a Marathon Media production for TF1 (France). Zodiak Kids handles all TV rights for the series, while Zodiak Kids CP Paris manages the consumer products rights.

CreaCon Group, a Norway-based kid’s production/distribution/licensing/live events/home entertainment company, enters into a multi-year partnership with Turner Broadcasting System Europe for the first two seasons and specials of its animated preschool series City of Friends for the Nordic region. Under the deal, TBS Europe picks up City of Friends (26×10 and 2×30 specials), which it will broadcast daily on its Cartoon Network and Boomerang channels in Norway, Finland, Sweden, Iceland and Denmark beginning October 2012. CreaCon Group is currently developing the third season of City of Friends with its animation partner France-based Action Synthese Studios. The new pact with TBS Europe augments the distribution of City of Friends, which can currently also be seen on TV2 (Norway, TV4 (Sweden), TV2 (Denmark) and in Finland on MTV3 and Juniori. The TV series is based on the stories of a real-life Norway state police officer, CreaCon founder and CEO Carl Christian Hamre, which he initially used as bedtime stories for his son. City of Friends follows the adventures of three new emergency service recruits who work together to solve problems.

MarVista Entertainment licenses the kid-targeted TV series Prank Patrol Australia to ZDF (Germany). Prank Patrol Australia is based on the popular Prank Patrol reality series created by Apartment 11 Productions and produced by activeTV Australia. The Australian format of Prank Patrol was commissioned by ABC Television (Australia) for its kid’s channel, ABC 3, and is hosted by Scotty Tweedie, who along with his sidekicks and special guests, help kids pull off pranks on friends and family members. The series received Production Investment funding from Australia’s state government screen agencies, Film Victoria and Screen Queensland. As previously announced CBBC (UK) has picked up the license for the second season (39 episodes) of the series, with RAI (Italy) also licensing the series.

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) signs a programming deal with MBC3 (Middle East) for a number of Nickelodeon series as part of a four-year programming block deal  including: Jimmy Neutron (seasons 1-3); Blues Room (seasons 1 and 2); Danny Phantom (season 1); As Told by Ginger (season 1); Dora the Explorer (season 6); Fanboy & Chum Chum (season 2); iCarly (seasons 3-5); and All Grown Up (seasons 1 and 2). The deal also covers: T.U.F.F Puppy (season 1); Mighty B (seasons 1 and 2); Penguins of Madagascar (season 2); Kung Fu Panda (season 1); Fairly Odd Parents (seasons 7 and 8); SpongeBob SquarePants (seasons 7 and 8); Victorious (season 1); Chalkzone (seasons 1-4); and The X’s (season 1).

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Viacom International Media Networks appoints Hyde Schram as Senior Director/International Promotions, Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP). Schram will be based and in LA and will focus her efforts on building VIMN’s promotions business internationally with regional and local licensing teams in the quick service restaurant (QSR), consumer packaged goods and food and beverage categories, as well as clip licensing. Most recently, Schram served as VP/Partner Relationships for TPG Rewards, a promotional rewards business. She previously toiled as Executive Director, Global Promotions Theatrical/Home Video at The Walt Disney Company.

Danielle Davies is named as Head of Sales and Acquisitions, Hoho Rights, the commercial arm and subsidiary of the kid-centric production company Hoho Entertainment (Cloudbabies, Abadas). In her new position Davies is responsible for international TV sales of in-house and third party kid’s properties, and she will also work with the licensing and merchandising team to support the strategic roll out of Hoho’s brands across all media platforms. Davies joins Hoho Rights from Viacom International Media Networks, where she most recently served as acting sales director and is responsible for direct sales in key territories across all broadcast formats. She previously was SVP/Sales, DCD Rights, and in sales positions at 3DD Entertainment, Granada/Action Time and RDF Media.
