Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 26, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Kid’s publisher Egmont UK unveils its initiative to ink creative partnerships with companies around the world and across various kid-centric entertainment genres to co-develop ideas for publishing, TV and digital. With that, Egmont UK also announces its first partnership is with DXH Media to co-produce the new series Shipwrecked, which is described as “Gossip Girl meets Lost.” Egmont author Siobhan Curham (author of Dear Dylan) is working alongside Egmont Editor Ali Dougal and DHX Media VP Development Stephanie Betts to create both a book and TV series. Egmont UK and DHX Media will share rights across all formats for Shipwrecked. For its new initiative, Egmont UK is working closely with TV consultant Angus Fletcher (formerly President Him Henson Television Group) on its new partnerships and projects.

Saban Brands acquires the Digimon anime franchise, which includes rights to the property outside of Asia. Saban Brands will debut the newest season of the series, Digimon Fusion, at Mipcom next month in France. Saban Brands has appointed MarVista Entertainment to handle international distribution of the new season of the series (outside of Asia), as well as distribution for more than 250 half-hours episodes of Digimon content from the library (also outside of Asia). Japanese animation studio, Toei Animation Co. will handle licensing and distribution of the property in Asia. Saban’s Fox Family Worldwide first introduced Digimon to US TV audiences in 1999.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Marathon Media, a unit of Zodiak Kids, has begun production on Blake and the Aliens (52×13, working title), a new animated comedy developed in partnership with Nickelodeon and Gulli (France). Slated to premiere on Nickelodeon channels worldwide and Gulli in winter 2013, Blake and the Aliens is a “squash and stretch” program filled with visual gags and exaggerated cartoon actions. The animated series follows 13-year-old Blake and three evil, alien squirrels been sent to earth from the future with just one mission: thwart Blake in anything does, so that he won’t grow up to be the famous Captain Blake, Defender of the Universe, and sworn enemy of their planet. The creative team for Blake and the Aliens includes executive producers Antoine Guilbaud (Phineas & Ferb) and Kaz Prapuolenis (SpongeBob SquarePants, Underworld, Phineas & Ferb), writer Reid Harrison (Rekkit Rabbit, The Simpsons), director Eric Gosselet (Rekkit, MBC), and producers Vincent Chalvon-Demersay and David Michel (Totally Spies!, Gormiti, Rekkit Rabbit). Zodiak Kids manages all TV rights for the property, while Zodiak Kids CP Paris will handle licensing rights.

MARKETING

ZeptoLab‘s popular digital game Cut the Rope will be featured on the big screen – exclusively in National CineMedia‘s (NCM) movie theaters in the US. Beginning this Friday, September 28 and running through Thursday, October 25.  Special Cut The Rope video content – including a new animated short featuring the game’s star character, Om Nom, will run in NCM’s FirstLook movie pre-show ahead of select screenings of G and PG-rated movies.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Junior acquires the rights to air Little Airplane Productions‘ first animated movie special, Small Potatoes – Meet the Small Potatoes (1×45), in the US and Japan. Meet the Small Potatoes features the four singing spuds alongside legendary British actor Malcolm McDowell (Entourage, Clockwork Orange). The movie will premiere in the US on Disney Channel and Disney Junior in early 2013, and then on Disney Junior in Japan later in 2013. In the special, McDowell lends his voice to Lester Koop who is manager of the Small Potatoes band, as they rise from their roots in Idaho. Written and directed by Little Airplane founder and president Josh Selig and features songs by the late Jerry Bock (Fiddler on the Roof). The cast of the film includes hundreds of custom potato avatars of Disney Junior and Small Potatoes fans, which will be integrated throughout the special. Beginning Monday, November 5, 2012, Disney Junior invites families to visit DisneyJunior.com/SmallPotatoes where parents can submit photos of their kid(s) for the chance to have them “potato-ized” and featured in the movie.

Cake, a distributor of kid/family content, will launch season two of TeamTO’s series Angelo Rules, featuring longer episodes, at Mipcom in Cannes next month. The second season of Angelo Rules has already been solidified with Cartoon Network Europe, Cartoon Network Latin America, Cartoon Network Asia and Super RTL. Angelo Rules season two is a co-production between TeamTO, Cake, and Teletoon. The show will debut on France Television this fall. At Mipcom, Cake will also showcase the seasonal specials Dear Dracula and Abominable Christmas, ad the kid-targeted factual series Get Well Soon and Fleabag Monkeyface.

Australia’s ABC Commercial inks deals for the second season of Pukeko Pictures’ animated series The WotWots (26×12 in HD) to broadcasters across Asia and Australia. Acquiring season two of The WotWots is Thai PBS, along with Mediacorp Okto in Singapore, Mongol TV and Australia Network.

Spain-based Imira Entertainment secures new broadcast deals for the K6-12 aimed 2D animated series Lucky Fred (52×12), which is available in 26 different languages. Channels recently signing on for the series include Nickelodeon Germany and Poland, which have acquired free TV rights, alongside deals with Nickelodeon in the Baltics and Ukraine, which take the for pay TV rights. Also picking up the pay TV rights for the series are Canal Panda (Portugal) and Tooniverse (South Korea), while ORF (Austria) and Televisa (Mexico) picks up free TV rights. These new broadcasters join channels already committed to the animated series, including TF1 (France), Disney Channel in Spain, France, Italy, Germany, India, Israel & Australia, Nickelodeon in Benelux, Scandinavia, Latin America, Asia & South Korea, RTM (Malaysia), e-Vision (UAE), TG4 (Ireland) and Kidz (Turkey). An Imira co-production with Spain’s Televisio de Catalunya and RAI Fiction in Italy.  Lucky Fred follows the comic adventures of Fred, an average 13-year-old who accidentally became the owner of a super-powered, shape-shifting robot, Friday, who can turn into any object Fred dream up. Together Fred, Friday and Fred’s brilliant next door neighbor, a girl named Braianna who is actually a secret agent, team up to have fun, get through middle school and save the planet. The Lucky Fred website www.luckyfred.com is available in six languages.

This week marks 9 Story Entertainment‘s release of the Almost Naked Animals: It’s My Party DVD. Almost Naked Animals airs on Cartoon Network in the U.S. and YTV in Canada. In conjunction with the DVD release, 9 Story also debuts a multi-platform online effort that includes the launch of a new Almost Naked Animals website (www.almostnakedanimals.com), an online super game Cabana Craze, an e-commerce store in partnership with Cafe Press, and a partnership with Jabbersmack, a social networking site for kids/tweens. Café Press will offer Almost Naked Animals t-shirts, notebooks and more. Additional items, including plush characters, will be available at AlmostNakedAnimals.com. On Jabbersmack, Almost Naked Animals fans can watch videos, connect safely to play group games or just hang out and chat about their favorite series characters and episodes.

BabyFirst TV enters into a deal with Samsung Electronics to make its baby/toddler aimed programming available via Samsung’s Learning Hub Education Service. Beginning immediately, BabyFirst programming will debut on Learning Hub in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Korea and Singapore, with plans to rollout across 25 countries by the end of 2012.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Disney Channel announces new executive roles, with Jennilee Cummings upped to VP/Disney Channel and Disney XD Original Series and Nikki Reed named VP/Disney Channel Original Movies. In her new position, Cummings, who joined the network in 2004 and most recently served as Executive Director/Original Movies, will oversee live action series development for both Disney Channel and Disney XD. She will report to Adam Bonnett, SVP/Original Programming, Disney Channel Worldwide. A 15-year industry veteran, Reed, who had been VP/Original Series, Disney Channel and Disney XD, will now oversee Disney Channel’s slate of original TV movies, developing new projects and working with creators, writers and directors, while overseeing the creative process. She reports directly to Michael Healy, SVP/Disney Channel Original Movies.
