Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, September 21, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Coolabi, a UK rights holder/producer/distributor that represents a range of properties including Bagpuss, Purple Ronnie, Scarlett & Crimson and Poppy Cat, has reached an “understanding” that would see the company acquired by the private equity group North Promotions for an estimated US$ 6.6 million.  The official deal will be subject the pre-conditions and due diligence.  North Promotions is owned by Edge Performance.

9 Story Entertainment unveils a new co-venture with WGBH Boston to become a co-producer of WGBH’s animated series Arthur, beginning with the new 16th season of the series that is currently in production.  9 Story will digitally animated Arthur.  Additionally, 9 Story will also serve as the international distributor for the new season of Arthur, which will premiere on PBS Kids Go! (US) in fall 2012.  This is 9 Story’s third collaboration with WGBH, having previously worked on the production its kid’s series, Peep and the Big Wide World and Postcards from Buster.

LICENSING

Hey Mom  I wanna go see the blue guys at Avatar land …  Soon that will be, or at least something similar, will be a reality as Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Worldwide joins with filmmaker James Cameron and Fox Filmed Entertainment sign a long-term deal to feature Avatar attractions at Disney parks.  To make this a reality, Disney, Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment and Fox, Disney will partner with Cameron and producing partner Jon Landau to create themed lands that will give theme park guests the chance to explore the universe of Avatar.  The first of the Avatar themed locations will be created at Walt Disney World, within its Animal Kingdom Park, and will focus on living in harmony with nature.  Construction is slated to begin by 2013.  Under the agreement, Disney holds the exclusive worldwide rights to the Avatar franchise and additional Avatar themed   lands at its various parks.

Nickelodeon and Jay Franco and Sons ink a new license deal for home products during Textile Market Week in NY.  Under the new deal, Jay Franco will offer new products featuring Nickelodeon properties including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) and Winx Club via all channels of distribution, as well as products based on its shows such as Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob SquarePants, Team Umizoomi, and Victorious at specialty and value retailers.  The new product lines, which include bedding, beach towel, and decorative bath collections, are set to launch nationwide beginning spring 2012.

Spain-based E-max enters into a license deal with Mind Candy to launch Moshi Monsters Clay Buddies, a new arts and crafts plasticine projects.  Moshi Monsters Clay Buddies, which allow kids to create a Moshi Monster character out of plasticine and then attach it to cardboard body parts, will be available at retail in the UK beginning October 10, 2011.  After they make their Moshi Monster kids can then upload photos and videos of their models at www.myclaybuddies.com, which will go live with the product launch.  E-max has appointed UK based distributor Click Distribution UK as the exclusive distributor for Moshi Monsters Clay Buddies in the UK and Ireland.  Click also worked with Moshi Monsters this year representing Topps and Vivid Imaginations.

NCircle Entertainment acquires the US DVD distribution rights to the preschool CG animated series Dino Dan, which can be seen in the US on Nick Jr.  Dino Dan was developed and produced by Toronto-based Sinking Ship Entertainment.  NCircle plans to launch the first title in the Dino Dan DVD series in late December 2011 and will support the line with strategic parent-targeted consumer marketing campaigns reaching.

MARKETING

Amazon owned Quidsi, the parent company of Diapers.com, Soap.com, BeautyBar.com and Wag.com, has officially launched its new online toy store, YoYo.com (www.yoyo.com).  Designed to reach parents and make life easier for them by providing them with an easy shopping experience, easy navigation and a selection of, at launch, 20,000 toys, books, video games and collectibles.  The site will continually add product throughout 2011.  The site also aims to make shopping for toys simpler for different shoppers, not just parents, but also other gift givers, by providing recommendations and other tools.  YoYo.com will offer free 1-2 day shipping on all orders of $49 or more. The site will share an online shopping cart with Diapers.com, Soap.com, BeautyBar.com and Wag.com. Purchases from all sites count towards the free shipping minimum, which drops to $39 for orders that include products from more than one site.

Saban BrandsPower Rangers Samurai teams with McDonald’s to offer Power Rangers toys in Happy Meals throughout North America now through October 13.  Consumers that purchase a Happy Meal or a Mighty Kids Meal will receive one of eight limited edition toys (action figures and role play items) based on the TV series Power Rangers Samurai, which airs on Nickelodeon.  This promotion coincides with McDonald’s rollout of its Happy Meal makeover, which feature healthier food options including apple slices with each meal.  It also dovetails with the new cycle of Power Rangers empower, an initiative that aims to inspire kids/families to embrace the Power Rangers core values, which includes teamwork, confidence, health and physical activity and get them into play via programs at schools, online and in local communities.  Currently the emPower Activity Kit Sweepstakes is running through November 11, 2011 on PowerRangers.com (www.powerrangers.com).

MORE KIDS STUFF

PBS Kids Go! (US) and TVOntario (Canada) order a second season of the animated adventure/comedy series Wild Kratts from Kratt Brothers Company and 9 Story Entertainment (www.9story.com).  The new season of Wild Kratts (26×22), currently in production at Kratt Brothers Animation Studio, will bring the series to a total of 40×22 episodes.  Created by brother zoologists Martin and Chris Kratt, who also star in their animated form, Wild Kratts is a co-production between The Kratt Brothers Company and 9 Story Entertainment.  The series is distributed in the US and Canada by Kratt Brothers and internationally by 9 Story.

CBeebies refreshes its early evening schedule this fall with the addition of new episodes of Waybuloo to the bedtime hour.  Beginning Monday, October 3, Waybuloo will be seen at 6p, followed by the regular bedtime programming, including In The Night Garden with The Bedtime Story.  Meanwhile, Charlie and Lola will now be seen Fridays at 5p and weekends at 9:15a on CBeebies.  64 Zoo Lane is currently taking a break from the schedule but will be back in 2012.  Kids/families can always view their favorite shows any time via CBeebies iPlayer at www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/cbeebies.

PBS Kids‘ series Martha Speaks (www.PBSKIDS.org/martha) teams with The Humane Society of the US (HSUS) to celebrate National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week (November 6-12, 2011).  In support, PBS Kids will feature a special week of shelter and dog care-themed Martha Speaks episodes, including one new episode premiering Monday, October 3 (check local PBS Kids listings).  Martha Speaks is based on the books by Susan Meddaugh, who used her own dog Martha, a stray dog, to create the title character.  Martha Speaks is also supporting HSUS with community activities through PBS stations nationwide and online resources for families.  On the Parents and Teachers section of the Martha Speaks website, families can find resources and information about supporting animal shelters, understanding and caring for pets, and responsible pet adoption among other things in a new Helping Animals (http://www.pbs.org/parents/martha/helpinganimals/index.html).

In Wales, BBC Radio Cymru‘s teen/young adult-targeted service C2 launches a platform for young Welsh people to discuss issues and topics that directly affect their lives.  Beginning today at 10p, @tebion (which translates as @nswers) will run for eight weeks.  Each episode will focus on a different issue, with topics including image, disability, bullying, sexuality, alcohol and drugs.  Viewers can voice their opinion and thoughts about the topics and discussions via text, phone, email, and social networking sites.  The series will be hosted by Nia Medi and feature experts for each topic discussed.

Hasbro Studios, the production/distribution division of Hasbro, expands into Latin America with two new TV deals.   Under a new deal with Discovery Kids Latin America, Hasbro Studios’ animated series The Adventures of Chuck and Friends (26×22) and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (26×22) will air in major markets across the region, including Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Columbia and Uruguay.  Through a new agreement Cartoon Network Latin America, Hasbro Studios’ animated series Transformers Prime will debut in Q4 2011.  Discovery Kids Latin America, which is a owned by Discovery Communications and based in Miami, operates a programming block on Discovery Channel Latin America.  Cartoon Network Latin America is a division of Turner Broadcasting.

As part of their almost year-old co-development deal, Foothill Entertainment and Odyssey Pictures Corporation are working towards series on three projects: a animated comedy pilot script for a series based on the HarperCollins books Gunk Aliens; a half-hour pilot script for the teen-targeted live action series My Momtourage & Me; and an 11-minute pilot storyboard for the stereoscopic 3D buddy comedy, Raz & Benny.  Foothill and Odyssey will be at MipJunior and Mipcom next month.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Sesame Workshop promotes Dr. Jennifer Kotler Clarke to VP/Domestic Research.  She will add to responsibilities the oversight for research planning and creating logic models in order to maximize the impact of Sesame Workshop content in the US.  She will also continue to develop and execute studies that address developmental questions to help inform new educational material for kids.  Kotler Clarke, who had been Assistant VP/Domestic Research, will report to Dr. Rosemarie Truglio, VP/Education and Research.
